"Can you do 2, 3, 5 and 10? 2,5,10 easy prob just scrap 3 " It's usually add one or take away one for 2, 5 and 10 to get to most of the others. There is a really easy way to do three. Look at your palm. The fingers are broken down into three segments so you can get the answer to 3x8 really quickly.

Iv never admited openly to not knowing them before , wonderd if there were others in same boat ? Will people think I'm thick ? " The tricks I use for getting the answer to the 4 and 6 or 9 times table is to deduct 1 from 5 or 10 or add 1 to the fives times table for the 6 times table. 11 is my favourite as all the numbers are just adding a 1 to each number until you get to 9 x 11.

"Discalculia is more common than dyslexia but not addressed in the same way because we have calculators to help us. " Yeah I can function with it but only as long as I have a calculator or pen and paper. I struggle with it emotionally though... it makes me incredibly frustrated and it upsets me to the point of being really obvious if someone catches me off guard and I can't answer. Mortifying. I'm glad it's an actual thing though. I feel marginally better knowing I'm not just stupid.

"We learnt then by rote at school, and was the best thing we did ( not enjoyable though lol) I just wish my kids were taught that way now I've tried introducing it at home, but they look at me as if I'm crazy " The kids I know have been given a mixture of tools, including rote learning for the times tables. They all seem to know it.

Times tables are taught in primary, starting in yr 1 with 2 and 3 times tables. Some children pick them up easily, some need more practice and some struggle. In secondary, students are encouraged to use mental arithmetic and have no calculator lessons. In the lowest band I worked with, without a calculator most students wouldn't get much work done correctly. Some people can be good at algebra but need to do the multiplication on a calculator.

"I think the worst thing education did was allow calculators to be used for simple mental arithmetic. OK I'm an oldie and they weren't really about until I hit secondary school. I am amazed the number of people who cannot give the correct change in shops. My first job was working on a market stall, during the interview you were randomly given numbers to total in your head. " Change giving is all about counting back though. Modern tills tell you what the change should be so people don't learn it. I don't see actual money as numbers, strangely. My first job was counting the money from the tills in a Woolworths. I had to write the numbers down, which was fine, but the counting the notes never felt like numbers.

He's about to turn 9 & knows 1 - 12. Not sure how useful it'll be as an adult though!

" I can't really blame the use of calculators cause like you say, we didn't have those till secondary school. No-one picked up on it with me though, I think if they had I'd maybe at least have got some help. I just think both my teachers and my parents thought I was uninterested. As with most things I don't enjoy, I switch off but with maths I think it was more than that. It bothers me cause it changed my career path. I did the mock entrance exams for the police and got 100% on the written and problem papers but I got to question three on the maths paper and knew I didn't have a hope in hell.
