Public Transport vs Your Car

Usually I drive everywhere I go. This week I thought I would use public transport, £11 for a family ticket I could use on the trains, metro, buses which was very reasonable, on catching the Metro the tram was halted by a d*unk on the line the staff managed to get him on board then he went and sat next to us coming back we thought we'd catch the train and it was like a stampede when it finally came! Young and old losing all senses acting like a herd of cattle. I think I would avoid public transport in future and maybe invest in cycles for the family. Think public transport is appalling and you have to pay for this

Mrs N used to pay £70 for a monthly bus pass. A 12 mile commute to and from work used to take 2 hours each way, buses were cancelled or routes removed making the journey even worse.

Now, I play daily chauffeur. Cheaper and infinitely more convenient

For work i have to get the pups used to using public transport and luckily it's free for Guide dogs . However we always seem to get to the bus or train full of weirdos and smell off wee.

So given a choice i'd drive

2 hours? I could run it quicker... why don't you get a bike?

Tried that, she sucked on a bike. Be more a menace than anything. Safer in the car

Public transport is great in London. People always complain but I love it.

Except for when they strike.

Public transport is a rip off in this country compared to places abroad.

When buses are cancelled or have been and gone before the times stated on the timetable it's out of order especially for females/young adults on lates. Reminds me of a time I worked nights, usually caught my morning bus at 7:30 it was roughly 7:25 the driver had seen me knowing I'm walking to the bus then drove off, he did this with a few ppl on the same shift, after reporting him he never did that route again.

I used to commute the 50 miles round trip to work on a motorbike that cost me between £130 - £150 a month. The coach costs me £95 a month but is unreliable due to my finishing times.

We have a great bus service.

I'm not getting started on the trams.

I can walk the three miles to work from my flat though. Need to pull my lardy arse out of bed earlier in the mornings.

But I love my car so he'd be my first choice of transport.

I also have a bike... it's covered in dust.

We used the bus & tram ticket system last year & it was brilliant!! We stayed out at Seaton Sands as cheap & could do the city then visit family in Joppa on way back £11 for the 3 of us for 1 days unlimited travel. It costs me £2.40 for a 3 mile bus journey here!!

The busses are a joke down here.

£2.80 minimum charge to go anywhere.

Many don't go into the outlying areas, off the main a roads, etc.

Far cheaper and faster to use cycle/motorbike/xar

I love the best of public transport but also enjoy driving - when road conditions aren't hell.

Our PT is overpriced generally, and it has been drastically reduced/not maintained and improved as it should have been. Look at small European cities, such as in Germany, where you have great tram networks etc. We should have been developing the same many years back, to remain competitive.

I use the car to get to university, as public transport doesn't serve me well: I wish it was otherwise. I prefer to arrive much earlier than needed, to keep the journey time a quarter of what it would be on a selection of buses and trains: and it's cheaper too.

I also think the train companies should provide refreshment services on board, where journeys take several hours. Whilst I can take a flask, the thought of having to drag that around for a day, whilst in London etc, isn't very appealing. As many of us are going to be using connections from buses and/or other trains, a several hours train journey, coupled with the other elements, is going to mean a very long total travel time. It would potentially be a cost for them, not making profits, but all the train operators are taking public subsidies, and it should be seen as for the public good, by reducing road congestion.

The real focus is that our road and public transport networks are only as good as they are at peak times. That's their capacity, and there's not a lot of spare capacity. The Birmingham to London rail network - which some bright spark thought HS2 should supplement - is an example of where capacity is limited, and the road alternatives are also congested.

If we were serious about reducing road congestion, then public transport would be priced much more cheaply. It would become way more attractive and millions more would use it. But, there's little capacity available at peak times. And there isn't the motivation level to really shift road users onto public transport, so it's not happening.

I'd prefer to use public transport for commuting, but there is no viable option for me (3 buses and 2 trains) as the network is not very joined up.

When I was doing my last degree a few years back, I drove the 4 miles to the nearest park and ride station with 6 trains an hour in and out of the city. It was much better than attempting to commute by car or by motorbike.

My car doesn't smell of vomit or urine, no one has ever tried to steal from me or pick a fight with me in my car, my car is always on time. I can't say the same for pu loc transport.

That being said it's vital in London.

It's very confusing.

Firstly everyone states public transport is more expensive, then you read the second largest expenditure in peoples lives after a house is.... A car!

Public transport is expensive in this country and does have a limited amount of integrating compared to other countries like Germany and Holland!. But try to remember you've voted for successive governments who have consistently un prioritised it... Hardly a mystery it turns out not so good?

As I live a 5 min walk from the town centre, I tend to use shanks' pony more often than not.

Over the years when I used to live out in the sticks I have preferred to ride (motorbike or cycle), I don't find driving a car a particularly pleasurable experience anymore.

Occasionally I will jump on a train ,as the station is within spitting distance, but don't like doing so.

Public transport can't take you door to door whenever you like at anytime day or night and even if your stuck in traffic in a car atleast your sat down warm and clean and not getting anoid with the lateness of buses/trains hanging around with a bunch of wierdos.

FOr my weekly commute from N Wales to Cardiff I get a bus to Chester at 0555, which takes the best part of an hour to do 13 miles, then catch the 0715 to the Diff getting in at 0955.

So that's four hours of traveling to do 220 miles.

At £60 for the train tickets and £6 for the bus that's damn good value, far quicker than by driving, and I can sit, read, do work, have a coffee, all of which I couldn't do in a car

The public transport is rubbish where we live, looking at around £10 per adult to the nearest city which is 16 miles away, and takes just over 2 hours to get there.

However we are considering getting the train for our next break away which we found a great price for getting to Blackpool and Chester and home for under £140 for a family of 5.

It's pretty decent where I live, and that's one of the main reasons I chose to live where I do, I hate the idea of being tied to having to drive everywhere.
