Right then all you petrol heads (I know you're out there) how much should it cost me to get my wheel alignment checked and reset/sorted?

Much depends on the type of car and where you go.

Many tyre fitting shops will give you a free alignment check then charge about £30 to re-align the front wheels.

Some cars such as BMW require 4 wheel alignment which will cost between £25 & £60.

As above, it depends on the car.

I've had the tracking checked and it's still not right so I want the full wheel alignment done - it's squealing a little when I corner.

Maybe it's the way you corner ?

What did they say when you had tracking done ?

Could it be bearings or brakes?

They said get the alignment checked!

Brakes and bearings are good.

Cv joint gator which holds greese on the drive shaft joint could be split, but would have thought they would have\seen advised on that when did tracking, and usually a knocking noise,

Not sure bar alignment can make a corner notice,

But I could be wrong, Mrwho is the gent in the know

Squeaking around a corner may not be the wheel allingnmet. Mine does it on full lock and I had a wheel allingnmet. I've been told it could be power steering fluid

Depend on the car as many have said but I'd always opt for a full 4-wheel alignment. Expect to pay roughly £50. Avoid places like Kwik Fit as they have an amazing way of 'finding' problems that don't actually exist and cost lots of money.

As for squealing when cornering it could be numerous things. First thing to check would be the power steering fluid. Make sure it's at the correct level and check your service history to see when it was last changed. I'd also have the suspension bushes checked (upper and lower wishbones, droplinks and anti-roll bar bushes, both front and rear). Also have them check the engine and exhaust mounts and make sure it's not something daft like a bent brake shield catching the brake disc when lateral (cornering) load is applied.

It's just been serviced by someone I trust and all of that will have been checked. But he has access to a tracking machine but not wheel alignment. That's what's left on the check list and what he said I needed to get checked.

Never assume something has been done unless you saw them do it. A lot of garages skip things but still charge for them or tick them off the service sheet and power steering fluid is one of the big ones (along with pollen filters and greasing suspension bushes). Open the reservoir, check the level and make sure it's bright red fluid, also have a sniff of it. If it smells like burned paper (my best description) it's not been done for a while and needs doing.

I went to kwik fit for set of new front tyres.

The nice guys there kindly informed me that I needed a new clutch, a new exhaust from the cat back and a new set of headlight bulbs.

They also recommend I get new back tyres whilst I was there.

Only cost me £8000

Such helpful guys

Surprised I needed so much I've only got 31000 miles on my car.

That wouldn't surprise me if it was true, they're fucking bandits.

One of the members of the AROC took his car for an MOT at a Kwik Fit garage and they failed it for having too much play on the steering lock! He questioned whether they meant the steering rack was worn and they said no, it was the physical lock on the steering wheel and that their special machine detected excess play in it. Needless to say he took the car to a different tester and the car passed with no advisories, he contacted the Neil Fit head office and got a full refund.

For those that don't know, the steering lock isn't part of the MOT and no such machine exists.

Wheel alignment and tracking are the same thing. I would ring main dealers and ask them what the settings are for your car. As a ex kwik fit employee don't use them they will Rip you off one of the reasons I left then. I would not rule out as others have stated like warped break disks, cv joints etc etc

Of course I'm taking the piss but stories like that aren't far from the truth.

My mate had an old Y reg Toyota Yaris which had a hole in the exhaust pipe, think it was somewhere at the back before the back box.

Think they wanted £600 for the repairs more that the cars worth

I can get a custom stainless steel exhaust for around that price!

Try owning an Alfa. It's £400 for just the backbox on mine. When it goes I'm fitting a full stainless from the turbo back.

depends . is it front wheel drive , rear wheel drive of 4 wheel drive . Audi cars tend to have specialist wheel aliment, most modern cars now need all wheels aligning to get steering geometry correct .

Get someone who have good knowledge of cars and check it for you. Tyre pressure may make your vehicle look like it needs wheel alignment and if you go to a garage they might charge you for wheel alignment when they are just correcting tyre pressure. Wheel alignment only should not cost more than £30.00, £25.00 minimum

ask around find a good garage, not one of the big chains because as well as wheel alignment, they will FIND other faults that dont exist just to get the sales figures up, then they want your email home address to hound you with special offers etc
