Sanitary bins...

The hygiene in our office isn't quite up to my own personal standards and I have complained in the past, sadly it fell on deaf ears.

However, every month I have to prompt someone to have our sanitary bins emptied. I sat down with a piece of paper and a pen and worked out the average monthly fanny pad consumption based on the number of women in our office. Approximately 1,100 products every month. Bearing in mind that it will be right throughout the month (unless we've all synced) so surely it's not too much to expect that they be emptied regularly?

I sent an email this morning entitled 'if men had periods...' chances are our sanitary bins would get emptied more often! It's a shame we don't have the available in emails.

I'm not asking too much am I? It should at least get done once a month right?

Even if all are wrapped up and in nappy bags, it's going to smell (although that is the least of your worries) and God only knows what's congealing in there...

It's unhygeinic and poor maintenance. Heck, I'd probably have to start emptying it myself.

Thank fuck it's not just me. I know I'm maybe a little bit anal about cleanliness but I'm glad I'm not just being picky with this. Our office is beyond sexist and I wasn't kidding when I said if men had periods... you can bet your arse they'd be emptied on a daily basis!!

I just think it's too long. Last month I checked and my waste from the previous two periods was still there. That is beyond disgusting. (Sorry this thread should probably have come with a warning.)

if your offices cleaning is done by a contractor there mabe a phone number on the bin give them a ring I'm sure they would pick it up

Alas I can't find any legislation on how often they should be emptied. I didn't think I'd have to find such a thing, I assumed common sense would do. Apparently not.

Urgh! Reminds me of the time when I first started work all those years ago and there was a rank smell in the office and nobody could work out what it was, it made everyone feel really nauseous until we could take no more.

Turned out the ladies sanitary bin hadn't been changed for months ... Makes me want to barf right now just thinking of it! Where's that being sick emoticon?

Normally the sanitary bins are a on a contract. The contract will state the frequency of emptying. Monthly is not unusual and shouldn't be a major problem if they are sealed units and are of the right volume for the amount of use they get.

It is a health and safety issue as it's bodily fluids. There isn't separate legislation, that I know about, on frequency of emptying but you will be covered by general H&S on disposal of waste. The quantities you are talking about sit well above the household waste threshold so the units should be sealed if kept for any length of time or disposed of regularly.

In my office we have to phone up when we need it emptied rather than having a set day for it... maybe you work on the same idea? If there's a brand/company name on the bin you can maybe look them up to see what their process is and schedule an uplift.

At my last place of work, where it was all women, the company were to tight to even get sanitary bins. We only had 1 loo, between 50 women. The stench on hot summer months

Company didn't wanna pay for an external company to empty sanitary bins, so we had to cope with a kitchen bin.

Fanny pads are mingin anyway... you should use Tampons..... i can get you some cheap ones if anyones interested........ 100 for a fiver!!

Health and safety consultant here... There's a legal requirement for welfare standards to be maintained so this would come under that legislative requirement!!

May I make a suggestion see if it gets a response... Next time your manager is out the office put a pad (clean obviously but he doesn't know that) put it in a sanitary bag and put it in his bin so it can be seen clearly and see what happens next!!

I'm tempted just to leave the whole bin in his office. Once I can almost live with but every month I check and every month I need to remind them to get it emptied. Basic standards aren't even close to being followed.

I know they can have more bins but there has to be room and they still shouldn't be there for weeks. We used to inform the caretaker and he would empty them. I assume there's a main bin somewhere that it went to. They were usually emptied every couple of days though.

Write an official letter highlighting your concerns. I would be complaining daily about it to all and sundry.

they do come with a chemical to counteract smells and bacteria - if they get to the stage they stink then gone past the need a change stage - should be contracted to be done at regular intervals - sounds like every couple of weeks is needed

I tried to find somewhere that's written down cause that's pretty much my view.

It's an ongoing bugbear that I don't believe I should have to have. I've stuck a note in my calendar. If it's not been done this time next month I'm going to take the whole fucking bin and empty it in the gents lav!

I'll have a look when I get to the office tomorrow and let you know.

It may be a case that it's down to individual company policy but it sounds to me like your company needs to look at their waste policy.

It's an ongoing bugbear that I don't believe I should have to have. I've stuck a note in my calendar. If it's not been done this time next month I'm going to take the whole fucking bin and empty it in the gents lav!

It may be a case that it's down to individual company policy but it sounds to me like your company needs to look at their waste policy."

I'm betting we don't have a waste policy or it'll be like every other policy which is at their discretion.

Just wondering if your company employs a cleaning company. I work for one and we do office cleans. If we are there every day ALL bins are emptied regardless of waste bins or sanitary bins. If weekly same rule applies. The only time we dont empty sanitary bins is if pads are unwrapped....then its a health and safety issue.

I once managed a site with the opposite issue. We paid for a clinical waste company to come and empty ours every week, at great expense. We had about 2 female visitors a year, and eventually the only woman who worked there pointed out that since she was 62, it wasn't a service she required. In the end she volunteered to keep an eye on it and empty it into the main bins should anyone ever use it. She saved us a fortune!

DG it's unlikely to be a big, anti-women, conspiracy thing, I suspect that the person who empties all the bins simply forgets that one. You could raise merry hell, but instead try to find out who empties the bins and have a quiet word with them instead; or once a week put it next to a bin which does get emptied; or put a note on a bin that gets emptied saying "Please don't forget the one in the lav"; or put a note on the loo door saying "Please don't forget to empty the bin"; or, if your firm also uses a separate clinical waste company for the san-waste, ring them and let them know they have forgotten it.

Finally don't forget to tell your boss that you've sorted it: all bosses like people who bring solutions, not problems

Is there not a SOP (Standard operating procedures) folder or similar in your company? If they are accredited in any way, shape or form, they will need some sort of procedures for audit purposes.. should have reference to their waste procedures in there.

I'll try and answer both.

We have a contract with a sanitary bin provider who brings us special sanitary bins. The cleaning contract is separate but apparently they deal with the sanitary people and oversee the bins being emptied.

We're currently trying to get someone to answer the question as to when and how often they come. As yet no reply. I'm not sure why it's such a complex question for them but I don't want to go direct because it's not my job and that'll step on toes.

However, this is the second time I've had to bring it to their attention. Bear in mind there are at least 20 female toilets over four buildings each with a bin. It's not too much to ask, I don't think, for basic hygiene to be up to a standard that I have at home.

I dare not go into any more details of the standards in the kitchens, some of which have the toilets off them, which in my view is a hideous mistake, never mind the ones they put carpets in!!

If it takes a month for it to be emptied again then I'm going up the chain.

Private company, alas everything appears to be 'at their discretion'

I'd quite like someone to tell them we're not in the 80's any more.

Beyond acceptable in my view but I'm hoping not to get fired in the process.

Haha... our company is not the cleaning company. I've no idea why they are involved at all. I shall get to the bottom of it though.

Our company staff manual is full of all sorts of shite... all of it 'at their discretion' which basically means every procedure in the office is under the supervision of the office manager who's a complete tool.

It should say in the contract then, but this sounds like the proper, hands-free, san-waste bins, in which case monthly is quite normal, though this can be increased if they fill up. Is it just your bin they're missing, or all of them?

Most san-waste/clinical waste companies publish their standard terms on-line, and if they're not performing, find out who pays their invoices and suggest they hold onto them until the company performs adequately.

Yup... hands free proper ones. When I find out when they're meant to come and how often I'll be able to tell. My next stop is the Company Secretary who is a stickler for red tape. She'll sort it out.
