Yes, a little ambiguous as it's being posted on a sex website but I'm not interested in how anybody here feels about their sexual history, mistakes, lost loves or great finds but I'm interested in the history of this earth. The reason that I'm posting this is that I took my 2 children to a Roman amphitheatre while on holiday here in South East Spain yesterday and I honesty struggled to fully comprehend that I was standing barefooted on the same step that a Roman had stood on in 1BC..has anybody else struggled to comprehend our fleeting moment on this earth?

I agree entirely, history can show you the here and now. I was, and still am, dumbstruck from seeing the craftsmanship, effort and pure damn hard work that was employed nearly 2000 years ago to produce the works of art that I saw yesterday.

I felt the same walking around the Colosseum in Rome, It's a amazing feeling being in the same place as someone thousands of years ago

I would say go to Leptis Magna or Palymra but both are a little unstable ATM.

The one Roman building that takes my breath away each time I visit is the Pantheon in Rome.

It is the most complete Roman building in the world and a masterpiece of design, engineering and proportion.

The Colosseum looks better fro the outside imo.

It was largely intact until the 17th century.

The colloseum is on my bucket list. Looking at the stars in the sky just makes me realise how all of the day to day stuff doesn't really matter and that we're here for as long as a snap of the fingers in a year.

definitely make the effort to go there mate, truly amazing, the colloseum isn't all that though, better renting gladiator tbh.

Think you've hit the nail on the head, I had to sit down for a few minutes to get my head round the emotions that would've been shouted, screamed, gasped and silently listened too while a play was in the same amphitheatre that I was in yesterday but 2000 years later.

Which one did you go to? We've just done a few of those. We also watched bull running in the one in Arles and a classical concert in the one in Verona.

Exactly as you say, I found myself looking round as everyone was cheering at the end, feeling as if we'd been transported back 2000 years.

(I also managed to pick the lock on the aquaduct at Pont du Gard, so we managed to walk inside that too!)

It's absolutely breathtaking, isn't it? Almost otherworldly, even when full of tourists. I can't begin to comprehend what effect it may have had on people when it was first built.

Kremlin was last year, but we didn't dare get a pic in Lenin's tomb because the guard had a very big gun, and had just got very angry with the guy in front for wearing a hat.

We didn't do Cartegena, but Merida instead for the main Roman remains. Spain is lucky since the muslims kept a lot of the roman stuff in use.

We did history from the cave paintings at Altamira (40,000bc) right up to the Normandy Beaches.

Amazing countries, but I was still ridiculously happy when the Brittany Ferry lady spoke to me in a Kent accent!

I enjoy the odd pint at Ye Olde Dolphin Inne in Derby, although it was only built in the late 1500's, I still imagine what it must have been like to have been a regular at the bar in those days and what topics of conversation might have been.
