So its September tomorrow and I've been smelling the autumness in the air this week. That smell always reminds me of going back to school ( primary school) in our new winter uniform, red or blue tights that the gusset used to end up round your knees.

Excited to be in a new class and see your friends, new Clarke's shoes.

Crisp white hanky up your sleeve.

Mint yoyo for your midmorning lunch and butterflies in my stomach first day back.

Grey duffel coats and satchels.

45 years on and that smell still conjures up those memories

I said that last night, we were discussing the children going back to school this coming week and I could feel that sensation I used to get the night before. My mum used to make us go to bed when it was still light the night before we started back and I remember the light coming through my yellow yogi bear curtains and hearing kids still playing in the street .....happy days.

that reminds me of a children's poem it starts of in winter I get up at night and dress by yellow candlelight, in summer quite the other way I have to go to bed by day.

I used to recite it when the older children where still outside playing

Yes! Where the hell did they think we were going to get this darn wallpaper from. When I went up to the grammar school we had to cover our hymn books with fabric, stitched on by hand. My mum was thrilled about that having just sewn name tags in all my clothes and those of two of my brothers . I did it myself but she had to supervise me and find a piece of suitable fabric. Then we had to embroider our initials on the front of our gym blouses and science overalls. I'd forgotten all this stuff

Lots of smells conjure up memories for me, Wild Garlic in the local woods always reminds me of my time as a ranger, I used to sit with my dog and put some of the leaves in my sandwich.
