This is going to be the worst week of my life!

I live in a houseshare with a Mauritius woman, her mum and dad are staying for a week on holiday.

After 5 minutes of being here the mum walks straight in my room unannounced and catches me in my boxer shorts laying on my bed, we both stare at eachother silently for the longest 10 seconds of my life and then she closes my door, awkward!

What a great introduction!

My housemate has already warned me and apologised in advance for her mum who is likely to try and mother me and arrange a marriage between us!

I'm really not the kind of guy who handles mothering very well, why can't my housemate just tell her to leave me alone!

What's the best way of dealing with this situation??? I want to be left alone as much as possible but can't be rude???

I might go stay in a hotel for a week!

Hardly the worst week of your life but the lock suggestion is a good idea if she starts to mother you just be polite about it and let it go over your head and before you know it they will have gone home...

Iv got a lock but I don't use it as didn't expect her to just storm in!

I will lock it tonight for sure!!

They have taken over the cottage! I might go sleep in the stables with horses!

There is no make sense being rude or something, because parents will back to home, and your housemate not.

Just use your lock, close the doors each time in your bedroom, if you want to avoid her mum with her marriage ideas then just invite a girl -friend even for coffe

That's how I feel, but like others have said I need to make some effort as it's not fair on my housemate. But that being said they should be staying in a hotel not here when we pay half on bills

Why don't you communicate to them if at all possible and maybe speak with her regarding the situation than avoidance she maybe feeling just as awkward as you. They are visiting their daughter I do think you are making a mountain out of a molehill in this situation..

That's how I feel, but like others have said I need to make some effort as it's not fair on my housemate. But that being said they should be staying in a hotel not here when we pay half on bills"
If it vexes you that much ask your housemate to contribute some extra money towards to bills whilst parents stay for a whole week op, or you could try and be a grown up and be nice to them, remember there's worse things going in in the world

And like I've said if I was going to make up a story I would make up a better o e than that!

As far as where I live, I only rent, it's hardly something to brag about! I houseshare a 2 bedroom cottage on a farm, and now there's 4 people living in it!

Yes I do have a lock but they had just arrived and she walked straight in on me!

So,you go to visit your daughter who lives with someone else and you decide to have a wander around the house,being nosy. You walk around the place looking in all the rooms,because you're nosy and you walk into a room of someone who pays to live there and see them in their undies,and it's their fault for not locking the door. That would be a nice gesture,and put a big sign on your door reminding them whose room it is and you won't have to lock yourself in if you don't want to. I'd lock the bathroom door though,you don't want her dad walking in on you scrubbing your arse

Why would I buy her flowers!

I'm already giving up my front room, sharing my one shower and letting them have the run of the cottage!

Plus I'm actively making effort to stay away from my own home so they can have family time.

OP ~ best way to handle the situation?

Have a quiet word with your housemate and explain you don't want to lock the door & would appreciate is she could tell her mum that your bedroom is a no go area.

Calm approach should do the trick.

If that fails then maybe next time she barges is make sure your having a tug...

Plus I'm actively making effort to stay away from my own home so they can have family time."

Well since you're so begrudging of their presence, you'll definitely have a rotten week. Little things like a bunch of flowers and making a personal effort can go a long way. I'd see about taking them out and showing them the sights, sharing some meals. Act like a gracious host. They may even ask you over to theirs.

A guy I know and used to work with occasionally, he is originally from Mauritius.

I know what the OP means with the word mothering, his mum was exactly the same but I thought it was lovely, came across as really friendly and genuine. Plus she was always offering food when you was at her house

I just like my own space! I moved back to England after living in Peru for a year, I'm just saving money in a houseshare until iv got enough money to disappear again.

Like iv said on many of occasions in this post I was being melodramatic!

It's horrible not to feel comfortable in your own home. I rented a room in a house years ago and never felt settled, I used to spend a lot of time driving around & in Starbucks.

Update

So I just went and welcomed my housemates parents, it went ok I made a little joke about already meeting the mum!

I shaked hands with the dad the mum insisted on a kiss and she already call me son!

They mean well and I'm going to make as much effort as I can but still not that pleased about it

Also I just got some bad news that there staying for 2 weeks!!!

Haha I don't think it's so much my housemate telling her parents anything is going on but more the fact her mum is from another generation and culture that might not quite understand how or why a single man and woman live together!

Also the farms beautiful so it's set in a romantic setting!!

It is strange she calls me son straight away??

Maybe that's a language thing though.

Whilst she shouldn't have barged into your room it's not the end of the world. It's a big deal because of your attitude. You're not able to do anything about them staying for the week. Your housemate pays the bills too and most people have friends or family visiting now and again. The only thing you can change is the way you're dealing with it. Be charming, be kind and be a decent housemate. Moaning about it just makes you feel worse. Embrace it an not only will you feel like a better person but your housemates family will be glad she lives with such a good guy.

If you have spent lengthy time traveling to places like Peru, I am sure you will have received other peoples' hospitality, or if not, you may need to take advantage of it on your next trip. So why not act graciously now, you never know when you might really welcome a similar situation yourself. Or you might need a friend or family to stay with you at some point.

Haha I lived in the Amazon for a year so no hospitality other than from the spiders and rats ect!

OP firstly this thread will have taught you a few things:

Everything you say, every word you use, will be taken literally, ie the 'worst week of my life'.

Everything will be sexual, ie the mother coming into the room will obviously be coming in for sex.

Words will be put into your mouth ie; the Mauritions are not animals, statement.

And of course you should be grateful that you live in a cottage with stables in a romantic setting rather than a cardboard box under a bridge, regardless of the fact you pay for the right.

I wouldn't be happy with people walking into my room either, you have the right to privacy and you don't have to be grateful for it.

It is unfortunately the pitfalls of house sharing. If you try and get along with them then it won't be quite so awkward for you. Hope it goes well
