Working from home...

I can't actually find any cons. Everything is a pro so far!

I have decent coffee, the TV is on, my cat comes to say hello between naps, I can have lunch when I'm hungry, I can wear my pjs, I don't need to do my hair, I'm comfy in my slippers and I'm doing all the work I'd be doing in the office. There are no stupid phone calls asking stupid questions, people tend to ask less stupid questions when they're forced to write them down in an email.

I thought perhaps I'd be less productive at home than in the office but other than feeling a bit sorry for my poor roomie who's at work having to move my stuff from the printer for me, there's not a lot to hate about working from home.

Are there cons and I've just not discovered them yet?

Only one con for me and that's not having the industrial sized printer and copier that produces my drawings in A1....A3 just doesn't work for me.

Everything is about working from home is perfect

There will be times when you're sorely tempted to stop work and do something else. It's inevitable.

I love working from home. My daily commute is down the stairs. The only traffic jam is the cats blocking the way.

Good coffee, food when I need etc.

Some will say what about office banter n stuff but I've never worked in a team. Always been a Lone Ranger.

See I do that in the office too. One of my colleagues reckons I have some sort of attention span issue cause I multi-task like a demon and often watch TV or listen to music whilst at work and he has no idea how I concentrate.

Keeping things seperate is key

An office in a spare room with pc in you use for work,

Having the working environment mixed with the living environment will cause distractions separating them gives the right mindset

Never done it myself but worked with loads, our business provided home workers a few years back

It's not for everyone as self discipline is key but great benefits to those that do make it work,

The only cons I've come across is the lack of people interaction. It's great to be in a conference call in your pjs though.

I have done this for over 10 years now, love it. There pros certainly outweigh the cons. Yes there are distractions, but productivity for me is higher - i would hate to be challenged on how much or little I do, so I make sure sufficient is always done. I can nip out if I need to and make up the time in the evenings if I need to - flexibility is the key.

My job means I work out and about at times too, so I get a reasonable balance.

I would hate to go back to commuting to one office all of the time.

The only con I've just discovered is that I'm going to run out of smokes so I will have to put clothes on and go out at some point! Curses!

The other con is video conferencing - I have been known to be sat with a shirt on, hair smart, but shorts on the bottom half

I cured that problem by stopping smoking. I used to waste a lot of time going out for a fag, as I wouldn't smoke inside and nipping off to go and get a packet when I ran out. Also meant I didn't need to do as much work to fund the habit. I also stopped coughing my lungs up each day as a bonus

I hang out the window like a fishwife to smoke.

The rain has stopped so I should probably pull my finger out but I'm not going out in my pjs... that's a step too far.

Honest answer now...how long did it take you to knuckle down and stop diddling yourself?

I thought I'd just get clarification.

I can't actually remember when I last did that.

My mojo ran away.

All my admin and phone calls are done at home. What works for me is to start straight away, get a routine going and don't get distracted.

I do it on the odd occasion but I would be easily distracted I think if I did it all the time. I do tend to work harder though. Id also miss the banter.

80% of my role I can do alone but 20% of it is about discussing concepts or presenting.

Just remember to cut your toenails and don't start wearing Kleenex boxes on your feet instead of slippers.

Increased heating / electricity charges / phone charges

Lack of equipment

Lack of support from colleagues

Distractions

Lack of space

Lack of secure paperwork storage

Lack of supervision

It isn't possible for me to work at home so the above is guesswork

I've only been back in the office for 17 minutes and already I'd quite like to string someone up by the short and curlies.

Do you think if I start a petition to send myself home I could go out into the street and have people sign it for me?

Can you tell??

I am terrible at staying focused when I'm here instead of at work!
