this week hundreds of protestors took the streets of Manhattan, breasts free, claiming they should have the same rights as men to go topless in the streets.

First off I absolutely agree that if a guy is allowed to do it then a woman should be able to as well.

People offended by the sight of something as natural as boobs probably needs to grow up.

But just because you can do something does mean you should.

When I see guys bouncing around town trying to look sexy with their tops off or beer belly blokes flopping around I think "put yourself away you look like a twat." As opposed to "what a shining beacon of freedom and an all round positive role model, we should all be doing this"

What are your thoughts?

Your comment 'just because you can doesnt mean you should' rings true with me. I have no qualms about being topless in appropriate situations but there is no way the girls are coming out in Tesco. I have mixed feelings about this. Many young women have serious body image issues. Being topless in public could make this much worse for them.

While I agree that being naked is nothing to be ashamed of, my mother and many of her generation are mortified by the thought of it.

Nudity should not equal sexuality in our society which unfortunately it does at the moment.

I'm all for people being able to be topless or nude without it provoking shock or disgust, however I don't think it's appropriate walking through a town centre, no matter if you're male or female.

I don't like it when men whip their shirts off at the first sign or sun (and invariably tuck it into their back pocket ) and I would think the same about women. In a park or beach or at a pool no problem.

A woman I know who travelled in Africa caused a stir by wearing shorts and a t shirt. It seemed it was ok to be toplesd but she horrified the locals by having bare legs. We do link nudity with sex and I agree it is not right to do so but walking round half naked will not make it more acceptable. We have only recently seen the demise of Page3 pics.

Most the guys around here who go top less are either 16 and are so scrawny whilst trying to look hard it just makes me laugh. Or it's guys who look like Homer Simpson and it's put the belly and moobs away.

Would have no issue with either sex being topless, just not really sure it's needed in general public

I can totally see when I as a woman would like to be able to legally take off my top in public. A few examples:

When I'm in the park trying to get a tan, it would be nice to take it off. Also, I can see wanting to take off my top when sitting in my yard (front or back). There are other examples I'm sure.

I don't think the women protesting wanted necessarily to walk down 5th avenue on a regular basis with their boobs out...

After excercise is the only time I think it's practical to be topless in this country. Far too chilly most of the time.

On rare sunny days I think everyone who whips out the six pack of soft white rolls is making it too easy. If your shirt comes off without even asking, it's fair to assume the pants do as well.

Makes no sense they made it illegal in the first place? Most people with big tits wear low cut tops anyway so we can see them lol, but seriously it really doesn't make any sense that our tits are illegal.

I'm not usually one for being sensible, but I think you've hit it perfectly with this post

I get sweaty underboobs in hot weather and that is more embarrassing than being topless, imo.

anyone know why they made our boobs an offence?

its not the whole boob its just womens nipples that are illegal..if they are covered even by clear sticky backed plastic they are not illegal anymore, and you are not classified as topless apparently

all pretty daft to me..

you can tell, ive done some research on this topic...so nipple tassles on and you wont get done

please check local bylaws and local parish newsletters before doing so, otherwise you may run into burning at stake or stoning consequences

Well didn't know it was our nipples, although that's why facebook bans them. Still stupid though, yep.
