What's the difference between having an opinion and being judgemental?

Is it "an opinion" as long as you agree with the person... but "judgemental" if you disagree?

Opinions should be given once a judgement had been made, surely? It may be the way in which an opinion is given that leads people to think about the words being judgemental or not.

If you look up the word judgmental in the dictionary there are generally two meanings, which help us sort out the issues. One has to do with making judgments; so, yes, at a basic semantic level, making judgments is being judgmental.

The other meaning of judgmental has to do with being overly critical in an unhelpful way, and it is this separate meaning that allows us to get to the heart of the issue. I think It is when we make judgments in ways that have harmful or negative consequences that we are being judgmental in ways that are best to avoid.

It's the manner in which the opinion is given that makes it a judgement. Unfortunately that goes for both the giver and recipient of the opinion and the manner may be misjudged without context.

I agree. Taking my earlier post a bit further I think it is being judgemental when judgments

come from a place of trying trying to exert power over another,

lack empathy,

are based on our own idiosyncratic values or tastes,

are overly based on other people’s character rather than behavioural,

are closed to additional context, shallow, and pessimistic,

and ultimately have the consequence of making the other person less worthwhile or unworthy.

When your accused of being judgemental it means you have won the argument and your opinion is valid

As this is the case retire gracefully or they will attack with dog poo on a stick

I would say it depends on context - but an opinion is more a statement of belief, whereas being judgmental implies that a moral/value/worth judgement has been made.

Judgemental: Oh you assert a? Well that says a lot about you, you dirty so and so. How can you sleep at night? Only people with any sense at all assert b!

I think you can have an opinion without being judgemental. I suspect it's in the wording used. It's perfectly acceptable to have your say and remain polite. Tone and expression can both be missing from the text when it's written down.

I'm happy to disagree. I just believe in not being rude or personal about it. The world would be weird if we all shared the same thought process.
