So in Autumn, Virgin are sending another Internet connection to your superhub.

This will allow other Virgin users access to the Internet via your superhub.

They say that your speed will stay the same and one connection can't talk to the other one.

Thoughts?

Too intrusive, and makes your wifi vulnerable.

Plus my internet is just fine, i don't need to connect to anyone elses. If someone else has shit internet i don't want them fucking up mine.

This is just like the BT openzone.

what they mean is that your hub will send out a second wifi signal which is "public access" although only virgin customers will have access for free others will have to pay a roaming charge. This is how BT openzone coverage is achieved, with a little bit of signal coming from every BT hub.

It's part of the governments initiative to have total wifi coverage across public areas. Virgin are joining in with it.

It will not affect your privacy / security. although i might personally object to Virgin using my electricity to power the hub that outsiders get to use!!

If it's the infrastructure they say it is it will not slow your connection. That said the more people in your area using the same isp will slow down your connection at peak times.

You can opt out if you wish. The email I just got says it won't affect your use or security. If you opt out, you won't be able to use it.

There's another speed boost in the pipeline too so even if it does slow your connection a tiny amount (which it won't) you won't notice because your speed will have increased anyway.

That sounds like BT Openzone. The upside is that you can get WiFi access almost anteater anywhere when you're in town.

It's a tad like having TiVo that has its own dedicated broadband line so it won't effect your speed or streaming either. What does effect speed and streaming is over use on the fair usage policy.

I didn't know they were planning another increase. Personally, I'd much rather they give me the speed we're paying for already but have never once got close to achieving instead of promising something faster that they can't actually give

It's exactly the same as BT have done with their Homehubs for a number of years (BT OpenZone/BTFon).

The Ip ranges allocated are in different subnets from the range used for your home network and they also use QOS (Quality of Service) to ensure priority is given to anything the home user is doing.

You also need your BT (or in this case Virgin) username and password to access a Virgin hotspot.

TalkTalk will more than likely release something similar soon as well.

If they do it the same way as BT then you can opt out of allowing your home router to be used as a hotspot however this also means that you can't use other users hotspots

Did you know that doing that can (depending on how /who you get your broadband) lead to slower speeds as the providers systems see the loss of service as a "fault" and if supplied via DSL based technologies train the line back to try and stabilise it automatically.

I don't want people sharing mine either. Surely we get a say in this and would this mean they can see what we are accessing and vice versa?

you'll probably get the option to opt out same as BT does and no they cant see your traffic and you can't see theirs.

Well technically if you really wanted too you/they probably could but if someones clever enough to do that then they don't need this feature enabled anyways ;o)
