Really lovely girl on This Morning, she has lived with HIV for 11 years now, she was 18 when she contracted it.

she slept wth a guy once..

really brave of her to go on TV to raise awareness.

With almost 7 million of it's people infected with HIV, the South African leadership still questions whether HIV is the prequel to AIDS.

To this day the South African government still do not routinely provide anti-retroviral drugs to HIV patients.

They famously recommended that those infected with HIV drink an infusion of Garlic, Tea and Beetroot.

BUT.....They have greatefully accepted over $40 million of funding from the World Health Organisation since 2005 to combat HIV/AIDS......

I'd rather they went with the Beetroot cure.

And I have no intention of making character assessments on anyone on the basis of one sentence.

I do not judge a persons character on anything they write online. It gets lost in translation way too easily.

I am not starting an argument on this thread. HIV and AIDS need highlighting, not bickering and one up man ship.

Please do not think you are not at risk from the disease, because everyone is. No matter what they believe.

Lead by example.

We need to educate ourselves so we can educate others, no matter what country or religion people follow. AIDS/HIV has no preference or discrimination of who it is passed to, be it in a sexual or non sexual way.

All we can do is use common sense and use the knowledge that has been handed to us all to try to reduce the risks of contracting and spreading the infection.

As someone who lost a close family member to this back in 1991, I personally appreciate this from Admin (As does Mrs Party as its an issue that greatly affects her country)and my cousins death was very unpleasant and he died on my birthday no less.

It can only be a good thing to show that the swinging community takes this issue seriously not only with prevention, but also education and de-stigmatisation.

This was one of the reasons we insisted on a whole chapter on safe sex in our book, and listed various charities and support groups as well as including an inter_iew with someone from the NHS.

There are 30 Million people that have died from it to date, and 40 Million living with it now.

Be safe, get tested, protect yourself, protect others.

I am currently in an African country where the rate of infection is close to 30%. The drugs are available free of charge thanks to several charities but it is impossible to stop transmission as 85% of the population is so desperatly poor they cannot afford condoms. Often women will only find out their status once they are pregnant and go to hospital for ante-natal care. Still vast majority of ppl live without water, sanitation, electricity, a regular income and HIV is very low on their list of subsistence priorities...

A complicated problem...

yes people like having sex, but one of the biggest risks is casual sex, no condom is 100% and how many people use protection in every aspect of sex? yes using protection lowers the risks.. but then having multiple partners is increasing that lowered sex..

so just think for a site that is promoting casual sex its a bit ironic they have put up the red ribbon..

It's like pregnancy. It only takes one occasion for you to 'catch'. I met a young woman last WAD who was in the sad position that her very first and only sexual experience led to her being infected.

Yes, the risk is increased but that is why you must mitigate against the risk. If you are having casual sex then it is more important that you take responsibility for yourself and to protect others. I see no irony in that.

yes u can protect urself, but as i say casual sex is still increasing the chances of infection with protection. The only way to stay safe is to have sex with one person only you know is not infected and never invite anyone else in.

as someone pointed out world aids day is aim for 0% infections.. well casual sex being the main contributor of the spread of the disease, protected or not, then its irony in its finest

but as adultsa on this site everyoen has the choice to take whatever risks in life they want.. as long as they are aware of the risks..

As I stated, it is much like pregnancy. The only safe sex is the virtual kind. You can practice safer sex. If you feel that swinging sex is too dangerous then stop doing it. I worry more about the people that go home with someone they have met in a nightclub or after getting d*unk at the pub.

Their biggest concern was that people didn't talk about it. One had even been banned by her school of mentioning that her sister had HIV in case it upset parents.

We now encourage people to talk about breast, testicular and bowel cancer (all previously "upsetting" as they are intimate cancers) but we are nowhere near this level of dialogue about HIV yet.

I'm doing a lot of work with HIV as part of my job...it's an awful disease but thank god for on going research and brilliant drugs which has turned it from a terminal illness to a long term illness

Another year. Thankfully not one where anyone I know has died as a result of this virus and no one I know has told me they have tested positive.

Now we have to concentrate on our young people.

The theme for World AIDS Day 2014 is “Focus, Partner, Achieve: An AIDS-free Generation.”

If we're ever to get to an AIDS free generation then we need to teach our young people to keep themselves safe(r).

HIV awareness is really close to my heart...about 15 years ago I was given the wrong result and was told I was HIV positive. I remember sitting there just feeling numb I didn't know where to turn. I then had the secondary test...they give you a second test to make sure the first test was accurate. I was told I was negative...my first test came back weakly positive and apprantely my blood reacted to this test..I had tests every 3 months for a year...15 years on I'm still negative but it really was a horrible experience. I feel for those who never had the chance I did to be negative. I hope that a cure is on the horizon

Right not being deliberately controversial so apols if it sounds that way but had I not seen this thread I wouldn't have known about it. So the awareness of this day I think is severely lacking.

And what exactly does 'World AIDS day' actually achieve? How is it different to any other day? Surely education should continue non stop throughout the year so what's special or different about what's going to happen today - 1st Dec?

Anyway - like others on here my thoughts are with those that have this horrible disease x

My son is 26 when he was about 14 which is 12 years ago i know he was educated about aids in school. They used to have 2 hrs a week studies on varies subjects.

He had to do a test and when he brought it home we did it together and he scored higher than me, so i know at least some schools dtared with the education. Does this no longer happen or do all schools do it now?

Not only did my knowledge of aids kick in with the 1982 campaign but it was also the turning point of me taking my sexual health seriously, i was very blase ip to that point.

It was a hard hitting campaign and i know many of my generation still remember it.

I had a very good friend who died of AIDS in 1986 so I have seen first hand what a terrible disease it is and what it does to you...
