Straight my arse.

That one over the Alps had a quadruple double hairpin at one point.

Still, good to see they've at least moved on to using proper numbers, I was worried petrol was going to be I.LVI Euros (or summat like)

Way over Yonder, that's where I'm bound

Was it a tidy hairpin or a wobbly one?

Reet wobbly!

A few times the road had fallen down the mountain so they just moved the crash barriers in a bit and stuck up a 'road narrows' sign

You can't really blame the Romans for that.

In NZ they don't even bother with the crash barriers.

It was quite sobering seeing all the motorcycle-shaped dents in them

I don't know, but I can tell you that if they drove their tanks with the courage, fortitude and daring with which they drive their Lambrettas, we'd all still be talking Latin!

Mountains are tricksy at the best of times but at speed...

I had a hairy time crossing the Pennines earlier this year in the new car. I didn't know its turning circle well enough to gauge where to be on the road.

You're doing it in foreign!

"did you know a Roman mile was shorter than a Statute mile?"

All miles are shorter than a country mile though.

"did you know a Roman mile was shorter than a Statute mile?"

That's cos they have little feet.

(Which, judging by Michelangelo's David, isn't the only little body part they have)

Actually that's quite close.

A Roman mile was a thousand paces of two steps each and the actual distance could vary depending on how well fed/fit a particular Legion was

So THAT'S why the road was so bumpy, too many heavy loads!

But isn't Michaelangelo's David supposed to become of the most beautiful men in the world. And he has small feet and errr stuff. Hope for us yet then

Tricky job going straight over the Alps I'd wager, bit steep for that. I do like a lumpy landscape tho

The contours looked a tad close together, but they weren't as steep as the prices on the autostrada!

And it was a much more scenic route.

Guerilla-camping at the top was a little chilly though - we've been used to 40°C, it was down to 9
