Am interested in your thoughts about this please as I used to be a donor but not currently as had a piercing in the last 4 months but also have stopped for other reasons, that being one of the questions they ask is,"Since your last donation have you had had sex with a man who has ever had oral or anal sex with another man, with or without a condom?".

Having had oral sex many times who is to know whether the guy has or not? If they are bi then you would expect a yes.

I'm sure the blood transfusion service won't miss your occassional pint or two. It all boils down to whether you feel a) you wish to continue giving blood, b) your happy to answer the questions they ask, and c) do you wish to continue swinging if they say they can't use your blood because of your varied sex life.

If it's a yes-yes-no then wait a few months, have an std test and then proceed with giving blood.

If your answer is no to the second question then you'll have to come to terms with the fact they can't use you.

You'd think with all the screening they have to do these days anyway that it shouldn't really matter how you conduct yourself in the privacy of your own or someone else's home.

I keep getting letters from them as they are desperate this time of year and did say please take me off back in the summer but it has gone un-noticed.Also had a visit to the gum clinic in the summer and all is ok. And I agree with your last point too. Thanks.

Im sure half the young free and single non swinging people that donate blood seriously could'nt answer the question honestly

How would you really know the answer?

It does sound a very invasive question considering they'll screen all the blood they receive anyway.

On that basis alone I'd probably stop giving altogether.

I used to give blood. I don't any more. Specifically because they won't allow me. I've had sex with men who are bisexual.

I visit the GUM clinic regularly, have perfect test results, have safe sex, am clean and because of who I have sex with they won't accept my blood.

I could lie. I don't. So I don't give blood any more.

That'll be that then.

I guess the line has to be drawn somewhere and when you consider that the main spread of Aids is between homo or bisexual men, that line is drawn there.

I wonder if they ask if a donor has ever shared a needle with anyone since their last donation.

They ask a lot of quite invasive questions actually, there are 29 Q to fill out, which I suppose is not a bad thing considering it can save lives, but its def getting harder to donate now than it did when I started back in the late 70's. Got my 25th badge tho several years ago so they have had a fair bit from me.

Course it does... but given that they must test all the blood that passes through their hands, who I'm fucking really doesn't make any odds surely?

""Since your last donation have you had had sex with a man who has ever had oral or anal sex with another man, with or without a condom?".

"

Now I am curious about that statement, what if you had anal with a guy, why is that so different from a woman having unprotect anal from a guy?

And why is there a difference when a guy gives oral to when a girl does?

Is there something medically that happens when a guy gives another guy anal that doesn't happen when a guy gives a girl anal?

Maybe i shouldn't have given up Biology for my GCSE's!

I think it's more indicative of a particular lifestyle and the elevated risks associated with man/man sexual activity than anything medical that happens between male/female anal/oral sex.

Surely though there are those that take risks in both the straight, bi or gay sexual arenas?

When you mention man/man sexual activity be that oral or anal, where is the difference between that and man to female anal, or a woman giving a guy a blowjob?

I would say that a big percentage of HIV infection is spread by injecting drug users and I would be surprised if it was in fact gay or bisexual men who were the biggest risk.

Oh my goodness, I have said I'll go with my mum to give blood in the new year. I've never done it before. If I answer those questions honestly they won't have my blood then my mum will want to know why! Help, how do I get out of that one?!!

You are better not donating blood if your actively playing even if you have regular tests. They do test blood but they are fallible at times. So unless there is a huge shortage in your area your just better not donating it or if you do inform them when donating.

Interest that the gay/bi angle is still very prevalent, despite what they tell you about the highest incence are now with hetros...I have a cousin who works for the Terrence Higgins trust..and he says the same...gays and bi are still the highest risk groups..
