'No evidence' of convicted postmaster's theft, Panorama learns

Menston near Ilkley

20 postmasters have been prosecuted and six of them actually jailed, yet it turns out to be a computer error, which the Post Office have covered up.

What price your reputation? These people have been falsely called theives and that will stay with them.

Way over Yonder, that's where I'm bound

I watched and I don't think it was a balanced programme.

Yes, there have been miscarriages of justice here but the repirts, independent and internal, on Horizon don't show the level of problems with the system the Panorama episode suggested.

All miscarriages of justice are horrific for those that experience them.

They were quick to prosecute and besmirch someones character though.

Despite the financial crash and recession caused by the banking sector the Gordon Gekko 'Greed is good' banner is still flying high. Feel so sorry for the poor people whose lives have been ruined by a computer system or in many of us 'regular folks' case, greedy bankers and politicians.

The way the Post Office treats sub-postmasters is nothing for them to be proud of, even before we get to how the have dealt with these cases.

The consistent thing is that these sub-postmasters signed off inaccurate returns. As they are handling public money transactions they are checked before even being granted a post office. They lied on their returns.

Now, I don't think they were investigated or charged correctly but if nothing happened there'd be an outcry on the scale of fraud being perpetrated on public funds.

As I said, miscarriages of justice are horrendous for those involved. There are others not related to nice upstanding pillars of the community sub-postmasters where the common public response is 'no smoke without fire'.

Slough

The post office have repeatedly lied in this matter. Denied the possibility of mistakes even after they knew them possible. Denied that the system had back doors that allowed access to supposedly secure areas.

But they wish to be believed as completely honest.

My guess is this will never be tested in court because the risk of a jury finding against them would be too damaging. Lots of money to m'learned friends and a raft of non-disclosure agreement protected payouts.

This story has been covered in admirable detail for some time by private eye. It has been buried in order to get the PO sell off through and now the new privatised PO can buy off the victims.

Same old BS

Also for those who have repaid the 'shortfall' if it has been a computer error, they have been robbed as well as having their reputation sullied.

I haven't watched it but surely it is incorrect to state there was 'no evidence'. More like questionable evidence?

However, the documents seen by Panorama show what the criminal investigator reported to the Post Office at the time.

The investigator wrote: "Having analysed the Horizon printouts and accounting documentation, I was unable to find any evidence of theft or that the cash figures had been deliberately inflated."

The Police, CPS and 12 randomly picked members of the public which sat on the jury and were instructed they could not convict unless they were 'beyond reasonable doubt' that the offecnes had been committed obviously begged to differ

Because they did not see the report I quoted from the P.O.'s own investigator.

There is one issue that is not disputed by the accused or the Post Office - those sub-postmaster's signed off false accounts.

I'm not quite sure I understand what you mean. The report to which you refer, which the jury did not see, provides that the investigator could not find any evidence the figures had been inflated. Well clearly there was evidence as the jury convicted!

If you had said the report found new evidence which the jury did not see then fair enough, but that isn't the case. The investigator is effectively saying the Court got it wrong, despite having nothing new to add. Sounds pretty daft to me
