"It's a sex site not an exam? Okay, well how about: it's a sex site not a height test. Or a fitness test. Or a beauty contest. Or... We all have our preferences, kinks and turn-ons. How someone writes and what they write is a good indication of their personality. So for me, decent spelling and grammar, a nice way with words is a good first step. " Would you also say all "youngsters" do not care or that people who can't spell well are lazy? It's a source of embarrassment for those who do try and this kind of post is mean. It's a test of ability and attainment, not attitude or effort.

"[Removed by poster at 18/08/15 09:28:20]" cr5-7 is right blue butterfly, I had to re-read your first post a couple of times where as cr5-7 version I didn't. I think spelling is a lady only problem, not many guys care about it tbh. I'm slightly dyslexic so I use spell checker, it's a simple fix.

It really doesn't say a thing about a person's personality. A person's ability to spell or correctly place comma's could, for instance, be affected by a condition such as dyslexia, which is no fault of their own.

But it's evidence of good grammar. ONLY lazy people don't use it, don't you know?" The 'Oxford comma' is an optional comma before the word 'and' at the end of a list: We sell books, videos, and magazines. It's known as the Oxford comma because it was traditionally used by printers, readers, and editors at Oxford University Press. Not all writers and publishers use it, but it can clarify the meaning of a sentence when the items in a list are not single words. These items are available in black and white, red and yellow, and blue and green. The Oxford comma is also known as the 'serial comma'.

"Some people are dyslexic and find it incredibly hard to spell and form immaculate written sentences, yet in person could be exceptionally articulate. "We are in total agreement with Blue Butterfly (the OP) on this point. A carefully crafted and easily readable post or profile in clear English, makes browsing this site a pleasure. Txt spk or other forms of bastardised language only make it more of a chore to disseminate the message or meaning of the words used. If you do have a problem with spelling, use spell check, and read it again before pressing 'Post message'. R&J" Spell check won't help with homonyms or other intricacies of the English language. Why not just be understanding that some struggle?

"Why do people get in such a tizz when someone expresses their preference for good spelling? If they use it to aid their selection process how is that any different than ignoring men beneath 6ft or with bald heads. Perhaps they prefer to meet someone in their own intellectual ballpark and rank spelling would preclude them from meeting. We are all individuals and have our own reasons for choosing who we do. I fail to see what is wrong with that?" Cos good spelling =/= intelligent. Also, when someone says "I only meet those who can spell or use grammar properly" but fails to do so themselves, it comes off like a farce.

But it's evidence of good grammar. ONLY lazy people don't use it, don't you know?" The Oxford comma is a stylistic choice. For some reason I have never been a fan and I would rather rewrite a sentence that may need one for purposes or clarification than resort to using one. I'm not turned off by people who do use Oxford commas though; it's merely a personal grammatical preference on my part.

Some things, such as attitude, are indeed very clearly gleaned from the written word. The irony is I have never seen a single post complaining about other people's grammar that did not contain a mistake.

"What if someone has absolutely perfect spelling and grammar, wrote an absolutely perfect message and even had brilliant pictures. But when they turned up for a meet they have horrific tourettes. I realise I'm being pedantic so there's no need to point that out." What does that say? Perhaps something like "Fucking cunt, twat, hairy bollocks. You look nice."

I fail to see what is wrong with that? Cos good spelling =/= intelligent. Also, when someone says "I only meet those who can spell or use grammar properly" but fails to do so themselves, it comes off like a farce. Being pedantic must be such hard work. And I must say your photos are lovely and will tell a person so much about you You've used that word three times, I'm starting to suspect you also lack a vocabulary. Anyway, I'm not whinging so I reserve the right to do whatever I want with my profile. Exactly, you've hit the nail on the head by saying that you reserve the right to do whatever you want with your profile and mine doesn't have any photos!! Your profile leaves you open for wide criticism, so when you whinge people will criticise. You must realise that. " My profile has never once been criticised until today. I welcome different opinions on this subject, I hate it though when people just come here to be argumentative.

I stand by what I say because it is my preference. I prefer people to know how to spell and string a sentence together. However surely the most appropriate place to state such a preferance is on ones profile, rather than a rant on the forum, which has the potential to come accross as arrogent and ignorant. Then there is the effect these threads can have on those who don't manage perfect queens english. There are a multitude of reasons why people struggle with written english, ranging from it not being their first language, being dyslexic or even missed education. There is no reason for those with perfect queens english to make the rest feel inadequate and worthless. So if one perfers perfection, please put it one ones profile (of course, it goes without saying that said profile would be perfect).

As I have said, if I decide to put a thread up about spelling and grammar I would expect nothing less than people to pick out my so called mistakes. Everybody here understands the point I have made so it is really a pointless exercise. If someone cannot spell or string a sentence together, in my personal opinion, they are lazy and really don't care how they come across in a message. It is very important to me and, like the word pedantic used just as much here, is my personal preference.

I do like a proper conversation, imagination and intelligence. The brain is an underused erogenous zone for some. Whilst spelling and grammar might not always be a good indication of those, for all the reasons mentioned already, it's a firm hint when they're correct. Text speak is a total turn off for me. "Yet another post to put some people off posting on the forums As said before it isn't always because people can't be bothered with trying to spell properly, sometimes it's because they actually can't and struggle day to day with it I'd rather meet people who can't spell very well and are genuinely nice people than people who are up tight and pick on others faults But then that's just me "

" ive searched forums for a grammar and spelling thread just so i can vent about an atrocious coupling of words ive ever had the misfortune to read, sad thing is it was in my local updates the above paragraph was an absolute delight to read it has restored my faith in my own region....i know its a sex/swinging site not a classroom etc but really... it... at... the...following each other in a sentence without a naming word (noun)adjective or doing word (verb) to separate them.

"If I see this in a profile I won't even bother going any further and if I get a badly written message I ignore and delete. I know youngsters today (and some my generation) don't think that it's important, but for me it says an awful lot about someone straight away. To me it implies laziness and generally not really being bothered." I can understand what you are saying but if like me you are dislexic then it's a bit harder.
