Poor Grammar & Spelling

If I see this in a profile I won't even bother going any further and if I get a badly written message I ignore and delete. I know youngsters today (and some my generation) don't think that it's important, but for me it says an awful lot about someone straight away. To me it implies laziness and generally not really being bothered.

Or are you looking for your meets to carry out secretarial duties too?

It's a sex site not an exam?

Okay, well how about: it's a sex site not a height test. Or a fitness test. Or a beauty contest. Or...

We all have our preferences, kinks and turn-ons.

How someone writes and what they write is a good indication of their personality. So for me, decent spelling and grammar, a nice way with words is a good first step.

Would you also say all "youngsters" do not care or that people who can't spell well are lazy? It's a source of embarrassment for those who do try and this kind of post is mean.

It's a test of ability and attainment, not attitude or effort.

cr5-7 is right blue butterfly, I had to re-read your first post a couple of times where as cr5-7 version I didn't.

I think spelling is a lady only problem, not many guys care about it tbh. I'm slightly dyslexic so I use spell checker, it's a simple fix.

It doesn't bother me too much.

Maybe the person has dyslexia?

If I can understand what they've written, it doesn't matter.

If someone can't spell or punctuated

properly, does that mean they can't finger or fuck properly?

It really doesn't say a thing about a person's personality.

A person's ability to spell or correctly place comma's could, for instance, be affected by a condition such as dyslexia, which is no fault of their own.

The 'Oxford comma' is an optional comma before the word 'and' at the end of a list:

We sell books, videos, and magazines.

It's known as the Oxford comma because it was traditionally used by printers, readers, and editors at Oxford University Press. Not all writers and publishers use it, but it can clarify the meaning of a sentence when the items in a list are not single words.

These items are available in black and white, red and yellow, and blue and green.

The Oxford comma is also known as the 'serial comma'.

"Some people are dyslexic and find it incredibly hard to spell and form immaculate written sentences, yet in person could be exceptionally articulate. "

Yup, and I have had brilliant meets with people with one line profiles - an aptitude for sex and education do not go hand in hand.

I prefer good grammar and spelling, but to me the ultimate laziness is someone who cannot be bothered to put one single pic up on their profile. I delete their messages on sight normally.

Whether or not spelling matters is irrelevant, first impressions do matter.

However, OP's profile doesn't say anything about wanting particularly articulate messages, so it might be worth adding something there.

Generally people are good at things they do a lot. So if someone has a manual job (for example), they don't really need poetry skills. So if you want to be seduced with poetry perhaps mention it on your profile.

I disagree. And I never accept that excuse from a man - unless you are an underwear model for M&S with your body on the side of every bus your identity is not likely to be compromised. Many would find the lack of effort arrogant and more of a turn off than a bit of poor grammar!

We are in total agreement with Blue Butterfly (the OP) on this point. A carefully crafted and easily readable post or profile in clear English, makes browsing this site a pleasure. Txt spk or other forms of bastardised language only make it more of a chore to disseminate the message or meaning of the words used. If you do have a problem with spelling, use spell check, and read it again before pressing 'Post message'.

Why do people get in such a tizz when someone expresses their preference for good spelling? If they use it to aid their selection process how is that any different than ignoring men beneath 6ft or with bald heads. Perhaps they prefer to meet someone in their own intellectual ballpark and rank spelling would preclude them from meeting. We are all individuals and have our own reasons for choosing who we do. I fail to see what is wrong with that?

You're a female, of course you don't have a problem. Again - it doesn't mean your own profile is perfect.

Be the change you want to see

Some people's opinions are valued, other's are just a pain

But I've perfect spelling and grammar, you'll just never be happy!"

Come see me after class, perfect grammar means not starting any sentence with the word 'but'.

Oh dear

"Some people are dyslexic and find it incredibly hard to spell and form immaculate written sentences, yet in person could be exceptionally articulate.

Yup, and I have had brilliant meets with people with one line profiles - an aptitude for sex and education do not go hand in hand.

I disagree. And I never accept that excuse from a man - unless you are an underwear model for M&S with your body on the side of every bus your identity is not likely to be compromised. Many would find the lack of effort arrogant and more of a turn off than a bit of poor grammar! "

Totally agree with this...

If we believed every excuse for not showing a photo, about 50% of guys on here are high ranking government officials, police officers, parliament members and doctors... or can't upload a photo...

What if someone has absolutely perfect spelling and grammar, wrote an absolutely perfect message and even had brilliant pictures.

But when they turned up for a meet they have horrific tourettes. What does that say?

I realise I'm being pedantic so there's no need to point that out.

"Why do people get in such a tizz when someone expresses their preference for good spelling? If they use it to aid their selection process how is that any different than ignoring men beneath 6ft or with bald heads. Perhaps they prefer to meet someone in their own intellectual ballpark and rank spelling would preclude them from meeting. We are all individuals and have our own reasons for choosing who we do. I fail to see what is wrong with that?

Cos good spelling =/= intelligent.

Also, when someone says "I only meet those who can spell or use grammar properly" but fails to do so themselves, it comes off like a farce.

Being pedantic must be such hard work. And I must say your photos are lovely and will tell a person so much about you

You've used that word three times, I'm starting to suspect you also lack a vocabulary.

Anyway, I'm not whinging so I reserve the right to do whatever I want with my profile. "

"You omit Oxford commas in your profile. That's lazy, too.

You'll have to avoid yourself.

To be fair, the Oxford comma is optional so the OP only has an option to avoid themselves!

But it's evidence of good grammar. ONLY lazy people don't use it, don't you know?"

The Oxford comma is a stylistic choice. For some reason I have never been a fan and I would rather rewrite a sentence that may need one for purposes or clarification than resort to using one. I'm not turned off by people who do use Oxford commas though; it's merely a personal grammatical preference on my part.

For sure, I am obviously much harder to please, despite the fact that I am not as pedantic about grammar!! Some things, such as attitude, are indeed very clearly gleaned from the written word.

The irony is I have never seen a single post complaining about other people's grammar that did not contain a mistake.

It was stated as a personal preference,we all have them,we don't all get jumped over by half the forum for stating them though

It really isn't about the spelling and grammar though, is it? It's the implied arrogance that those who aren't up to a certain prescribed standard are somehow less. I see that as ignorance and a lack of critical thinking skills. Filters can work both ways.

So what would people prefer?

A short one line message, no pictures but 100% spelling and the use of a full stop at the end.

Or

A message that makes references showing they've read your profile and has pictures attached. But also contains a couple of spelling mistakes and some words such as tbh (to be honest)

Dear O.P.

I'm not fussy about badly written messages either. However, there is a huge difference between grammar, punctuation and syntax. If the syntax is all there so is the person.

I know youngsters today (and some my generation) don't think that it's important, but for me it says an awful lot about someone straight away. To me it implies laziness and generally not really being bothered.

To me your comments imply lack of empathy , the belief that spelling, grammar and punctuation are the mark of a man's mind heart and cock. A pitiful myopic view of people as people and LAZINESS and GENERALLY not being bothered .. and blind arrogance.

It is lazy particularly given spell checkers. I am far from arrogant, it is simply my preference and only I choose and decide if the person messaging me is what I am looking for. Yes I love sex like the next person on here, but I also hate laziness and no self respect.

You're a nutter. How does self respect come into misspelling words?!

The same as having no photos on your profile can crop up in a thread such as this, I guess

But you are making grammatical errors in nearly every single post!! The pot is even calling the kettle black!! lol!!"

I'm bound to have grammatical errors, I wouldn't expect people not to pick up on the smallest and dare I say most pedantic error. I stand by what I say because it is my preference. I prefer people to know how to spell and string a sentence together. If they can't do this, which to me shows they are lazy, why would I want to put myself out for someone like that? And yes, no self-respect, I also stand by that.

Ok we all have our preferances, good spelling and grammer may well be one for some people. However surely the most appropriate place to state such a preferance is on ones profile, rather than a rant on the forum, which has the potential to come accross as arrogent and ignorant.

Then there is the effect these threads can have on those who don't manage perfect queens english. There are a multitude of reasons why people struggle with written english, ranging from it not being their first language, being dyslexic or even missed education. There is no reason for those with perfect queens english to make the rest feel inadequate and worthless.

So if one perfers perfection, please put it one ones profile (of course, it goes without saying that said profile would be perfect).

I'm not too fussed about spelling and grammar (a bit, but not massively so).

However, on any thread asking what attracts you to someone, instead of appearances, lots of people say intelligence, personality, etc. And that is seen as being more "deep" than caring about someone's abs. Yet when people complain about spelling and grammar, they get jumped on. Seems to be a bit confusing to me.

And I know spelling and grammar are not necessarily indicative of intelligence or personality, but they are for some, clearly. So I don't get the problem with people feeling this way...

As I have said, if I decide to put a thread up about spelling and grammar I would expect nothing less than people to pick out my so called mistakes. Everybody here understands the point I have made so it is really a pointless exercise. If someone cannot spell or string a sentence together, in my personal opinion, they are lazy and really don't care how they come across in a message. It is very important to me and, like the word pedantic used just as much here, is my personal preference.

Oh, too true.

I do like a proper conversation, imagination and intelligence. The brain is an underused erogenous zone for some.

Whilst spelling and grammar might not always be a good indication of those, for all the reasons mentioned already, it's a firm hint when they're correct.

Text speak is a total turn off for me.

I completely agree with you! It also puts me off when someone sends a pic and they haven't even tidied up the room. I just think that if someone's house is really messy and untidy then it shows they don't have very high standards and it really puts me off.

I have no trouble with your preferences. What I do object to is that your OP does nothing more than try and belittle people. Implications are not facts. Sweeping generalizations are an easy option, but perhaps not an intelligent one. 'all fat people are unhealthy', 'all unemployed people are scroungers', 'people who can't spell or use grammar correctly are lazy'. Just because we're taught to think in a certain way, doesn't mean we have to.

Note to forum: when someone has an opinion different to your own:

1) this is allowed;

2) this is not automatically someone challenging your opinion;

3) it's not an argument, just an alternative opinion, which is allowed and which you won't change by repeating your own;

4) because it's not an argument (or a competition), you can't win.

Some people appreciate wordplay as well as foreplay. Others just want to communicate with minimal effort.

Each to their own. Your personal preference is exactly what it is, personal.

We are sure that you will be seeing emoji profiles next. Language and communication develop over time, not necessarily forward in the traditional approach, but it will always evolve and be bastardised. That's 'bastardised' not the poxy 'bastardized' American spelling.
