my friend was recently at an awards ceremony and was fortunate to enjoy drinks backstage with roger daltrey and jimmy page.

posting photographic evidence on facebook, some flipperty gibbet wrote with great knowledge (re daltrey) "isn't he the dude that writes the csi theme?"

who educates these people?!

To be fair...not knowing who Roger Daltrey is ...is hardly a sign of a badly educated child!

Out at dinner tonight we were listening to piped Christmas music in the restaurant and the subject of Bing Crosby and White Christmas arose, to which my 13y/o daughter chimed in with, "Who's Bing Crosby?"

I thought everybody knew who Bing was but even more so, I thought just about the whole planet had heard, "I'm dreaming... of a white christmas, bub-bub-bub-bum..."

Here occasionally, but mostly somewhere else

"i was talking to teenage daughter about having dinner with rick mason years ago, who is he she said???? "

I've no idea who Rick Mason is either...is he in a Pink Floyd tribute band?

It can work the other way sometimes. It was non-uniform day at my school and in one of my classes a kid was sporting a mowhawk hair do, ripped jeans and a T-shirt emblazoned with the iconic 'God Save the Queen'

He asked what I thought of his outfit - maybe he expected it to shock me but I was a teenager in the late 70s and witnessed punk rock the first time around.

He sat with a grin on his face and said 'yes - these are lyrics to a song by the sex pistols miss'.

I said 'I know' and quoted the first line ...'God save the queen, the fascist regime, that made you a moron, potential H-bomb'

His face was a picture - how could an old fuddy duddy like me know the lyrics of a punk song?? Shock horror!!

They forget that sometimes, things are recycled and reborn. And some of us remember 'retro' when it was 'new'

Bolton

Came across someone (not literally I hasten to add) who asked 'whats Pol Pot' when he was mentioned in conversation, wasn't a young person either, early 40's I think. That's a lot scarier than not knowing who Roger Daltrey is! Z

I think it is more a sign of ignorance to not know the people of your own generation than to not know the people from someone else’s.

I am sure there are plenty of “everyone knows who that is” the younger folk could list and most folk over 30 wouldn’t have the foggiest.

Last year I asked my 10 yr old and 3 of his mates 2 questions 1. if they knew "The Lords Prayer" 2. If they could sing "The National Anthem" as this is no longer taught at school only my son could. I was completely gobsmacked.

The vast majority of the UK only know the first verse of the National Anthem... because it's all they every use at sporting events.
