"No I don't hate text speak. It's a shortened version for phones etc and it serves a purpose done well. Problem is , those that cannot spell nor punctuate longhand cannot do so in text speak either. There's a basic grounding in English speaking and writing needed for both. I like it in context. " I can just about tolerate it in certain contexts, but you're right, it's the basic fundamentals of putting a sentence together that's missing. I particularly hate when people's profiles ramble on and on with no punctuation whatsoever.

I'm so forgiving." does it have to be the knuckles dragging? I have dragging tagnuts..

"Text speak is simply lazy, lazy behaviour and has made younger generations think it is acceptable to transfer such idiocy into other aspects of life. When I text people, I use words IN FULL. I learnt to read, write and use English properly and won't demean myself to shorten, debase or abuse the language." I'd call some well educated people idiots, especially based on their assumptions other people are idiots, for simply using technology that might just be showing the 'educated' ones that they are in fact grumpy old dinosaurs who are afraid to learn to understand technological advancements are intertwined with language.

" I'll second , third and fourth this! So many people think they are clever and think they can show it with flowery language. The 'lazy' accusation is almost as bad. What bloody leviathan takes the long route. I bet they walk the fifty miles to see their mum, pick tea, dry it and grind the leaves and they are hewing their own fuel from the ground and storing it for winter..... I can see their 'fabbing' it's knocking on doors and asking the woman of the house for a quick flash and a grope cos the internet would be LAZY!

Just because I choose to use English in my style, doesn't make me a bloody leviathan nor a grumpy old dinosaur afraid of embracing technological advances! In fact, I ran my own Business for a few years, carrying out Proofreading Services for Businesses. Yes, even corporate customers abhor the use of text speak.

"I know someone who wrote a book, wrote very intelligently and legibly in good English on messages,Facebook posts etc,but in person could barely string a sentence together. " Some people can be super intelligent, charming, and witty...across the internet/writing.. It's great to have a well functioning internal motor..but if you cant take it out for a drive with others...it's pretty much useless outwith its comfort zone. I'd rarely judge someone on their text/writing, until I've at least had a real time conversation with them..

"I remember when on my pay as you go phone it cost 15p a text. If at the time I was seeing a girl it very often cost me a £15 topup a day in texts alone. If any text went just one character over the limit it counted as two texts and therefore 30p. That's when txt spk was useful. Now there is no need for it, it's definitely a put off for us, a profile full of it is insta-delete, though the odd bit of spelling mistakes and common abbreviations isn't that bad." Agree completely with this. If it's all in text speak and I struggle to understand it, the chances are I'd decide they're not for me. I once got a message on eBay in text speak with no punctuation at all... I had to restrain myself from requesting a translation Nita
