Guys I really need help. I was bought a laptop 2 years ago. I'm

The 1st to say I don't really use it often but it is so so so slow. When playing a YouTube video it stops 10 times in one song. The Internet is fine. The laptop has nothing saved on it at all! Why is it so slow?

"yeah only a free one "

Im not a expert and only have a netbook but have avg antivirus on mine and it tells me when it needs updating, I just have to click on the icon that pops up at the bottom of my screen and it does it for me. Also I get updates too for other things. Maybe do a scan on it, I do mine once a month just to clear any problems. Hope this helps, if not, perhaps you could take it to a computer shop

If you have an antivirus (usually free windows version) log on to it and it will run a scan and see if that identifies any issues re software upgrade

Maybe you can look at your task manager. Sometimes too many things running may lag your pc.

Which Internet browser are you using? Internet Explorer is a bit naff, I find Google Chrome much better. If it's an old version uninstall it and then upload the latest version.

Oh true...I dislike IE. I'm using Mozilla Firefox - I think it's less heavy.

How is it OP? Any better?

The options

Either a virus - get good antivirus run scan

Software needs updating - click icon I desktop screen or there will be a pop up saying update required

Have you tried unplugging it and......

Try all the simple things first.

1. Go to history. Delete all downloads, passwords, cookies, cached images etc.

2. Go to settings/advanced settings and select restore settings to default.

3. Do a factory restore.

4. Fuck it , call an engineer

Try them one at a time. Not all at once.

Get an external drive.

Don't do this. Just click the three horizontal bars in the top right.

Select 'About Google Chrome' and it will check it's own status and update.

As well as getting antivirus up to date and scanning, ensuring you're using an up to date browser, I'd install malwarebytes, which is a free programme that searches for more dodgy stuff and will remove it.

Also check to see if Windows needs updating - it may prompt you - as they typically release monthly updates for it.

Granny's advice is good too, like always.

Our laptop was un-usable at one point, every click on the internet sent a new pop up into action or caused a new page to load.

Downloaded free norton anti virus for a month to sort it all out then bought the yearly pass - runs perfect now.

Nobody has even asked what system it is yet!

My bet is the windows XP edition, if this is the case then your better off updating to windows 7

Let me know what CPU its using and how much RAM the machine has. A shitty outdated CPU and low RAM could slow it up

Might be an out of date browser or flash player aswell

Is it slow when you use the laptop for other things? Such as general browing? You might need to reset it to factory settings,

whats the make and model of the laptop?

To find out press the windows button (the one that looks like the flag) then type in dxdiag, click yes then some info will come up. Reply with the details

Reply privatelyReply in forumReply +quote

By (user no longer on site)

Right after that, press the flag button again...then type in cmd. A little black screen will come up. Type in CHKDSK and it will scan your hard drive and RAM for errors

New os install will sort it, firefighting with a multitude of virus and malware scanners may help it but not like an Operating system reinstall,

The important questions have been asked, what Operating system (xp, 7 or 8) what specs of the laptop, (goto control panel and select system it will say it in there)

A simple upgrade if you are eligible (have 7 or 8) will be windows 10, it will clean the registry and can be done at home

Otherwise it is probably looking at a shop or techie friend to sort it, the scans may help (avoid Norton and mcafee, both utterly terrible Av programs) But if not would suggest a reinstal of windows

It sounds like an oldish slightly under powered laptop which has a overloaded registry that needs a good clean out,

Just on a side note,

Do you have a mcafee Internet security icon on your desktop

Better still check if it is installed. Open control panel, goto add remove programs xp or programs and features in 7or8

Is mcafee Internet security in the list

If it is and you havnt installed\paid for it uninstall it. Hateful program that will slow or stop your browsing activity, it comes as bloatware often when installing adobe reader\flash and will cause problems to your browsing, an option worth looking at,

I seriously doubt any computer bought after about 2007, has XP on it.

You can take it from me, the problem will not be his operating system.

As for updating the o/s, very rarely much significant benefit - just a different UI + a few tweaks.

Prob is the anti virus , but a small tip - load your video, then when it has got to the end of play + all the delays- replay the vid.

Then it will run smooth = no delays.

Til you work out the problem

"As for updating the o/s, very rarely much significant benefit - just a different UI + a few tweaks. "

The registry over time gets bloated, registry cleaners do some work to reduce it but a clean os and registry on an older machine is going to fix a lot of slow machine issues, albeit temporary until it boats again

from the wording so so so slow I don't think the OPs issues are limited to YouTube videos only

Try and ad blocker - free dowload and stop all the pop up junk that appear. I personally find these video ads annoying as hell - along with the constant targeted adverts or the right or left. They make for a very clean browsing experience. It may help a little with bandwidth and your ram/cpu cope with the video download? Maybe look at getting plug in wifi range extenders, if you are finding that the laptop is struggling with a signal?

"Nobody has even asked what system it is yet!

First question I would have asked, being an IT person first need as much information about the device and any software running on it.

Installing additional software may be a bit extreme if it is just a simpel configuration change thats needed.

I dont use Norton or any paid subscription software just Basic Windows or any free option.... basically you cant get virus these days unless you visit dodgy website, load software from unverified source and some cases dodgy emails.

If you need any second opinions happy to contribute.

Install and run crap cleaner. Bear in mind with this and some of the other suggestions about cleaning cookies etc, you will lose any saved passwords. Make sure you make a note of them.

here

There is a common problem with YouTube and videos stopping.

Something to do with Adobe flash.

You should check you have the latest adobe flash plugin installed.

(Go to Adobe.com and look for flash plugin - it will then tell you if it needs updating or not)

HTH

This would be the first thing I do. Be a little careful with cleaner programs, though CCleaner is one of the better ones, just be aware of what you're doing when you use it. Defrag is OK to do on spinning drives but do not do this if you have an SSD drive, which is unlikely unless you purchased a highish spec laptop 2 years ago.

Go to speedtest.net and test your internet connection speed to see what you're actually getting. If you can go to a friends and try youtube on their internet to see if the problem is still there. It may well be your ISP throttling your speed, some do this annoyingly. The other thing it could be is your Wi-Fi strength / speed.

Have you always had this issue? If not then discount the Wi-Fi speed issue which would be caused by your laptops hardware but the Wi-Fi signal strength could still cause a potential issue.

Let us know what your actual download speed is from the results on speedtest.net
