Existenalism

It's a pretty big word for a Saturday night I know. After a series of epiphanys I've come to fully embrace existenalism, something which I think is very relevant to most within the swinging community

You embrace existentialism, I'll embrace a curvy buxom lady and her husband. Seems a fair split to me

"You embrace existentialism, I'll embrace a curvy buxom lady and her husband. Seems a fair split to me "

As the basic principle is doing whatever makes you happy as opposed to what people tell you to do or doing things to make other people happy then go for it

That sounds more like nihilism to me.

Similar but in existentialism there is no meaning to the world but we are free to create our own meaning. In nihilism on the other there is also no meaning to the world but no point creating your own meaning.

This could get so deep.

Isn't it more moving away from what society says to do through social conventions and living your life your way not what is expected

Which is a good thing

Localising it to individual people could just make a person unpleasant, we all have to make sacrifices at times for those close to us

That's what I think. OK, fair play in making oneself happy, but not at the expense of others. Existentialism is probably a great philosophy for, say, a hermit on a mountain.

Completely agree, of course there are exceptions. But on the whole I'll do what I want to do as opposed to the "expected norm". Within reason of course.

If there was wifi there I'd probably be quite happy there to be fair.

Existentialism and phenomenology are both bollocks. Bloody continental philosophers!

Philosophy always ends in solipsism if you go far enough. It's fine for the classroom but don't live your life by it.

What the OP describes sounds more like egoism. Just take a look at the two founders of existentialist philosophy. Kierkegaard explicitly defines existentialism against egoism in the book "Either/Or." As does Nietzsche in most of his works, as he argues that people create themselves through overcoming painful experiences.

Sorry for the seriousness of the post, but we really should keep our "isms" straight.

Never really been a fan of the whole "Do what thou wilt shall be the whole law" thing. Just seems to be like pissing in your own swimming pool. People who are selfish to the point of pissing others off end up shooting themselves in the foot. This is why it's actually more selfish to be altruistic. Then people think the sun shines out of your arse, everyone loves you, everyone comes to you with their troubles, and you basically become the hero/heroine of the show. If you want to have everything revolve around you and feel the best about yourself you simply can't beat altruism.

As for the whole life's absurd and meaningless thing... it doesn't make sense. Either life is understandable through science and science tells us that its meaningless. Or it's completely absurd... in which case there's almost certainly a God, seeing as that whole idea seems pretty absurd, in which case its profoundly meaningful.

Just my absurd 2p

Good to see the old reductio ad absurdum fallacy still alive and well Better than that... evolution theory is just creationism by a different name.. chew on that one

All I'm saying is philosophy in the classroom is totally different to real life. I'm sure Locke would've dodged a speeding car despite his views

That sounds more like nihilism to me.

Similar but in existentialism there is no meaning to the world but we are free to create our own meaning. In nihilism on the other there is also no meaning to the world but no point creating your own meaning.

This could get so deep. "

We only ever create our own meaning anyway. A bit like the varied spellings in this thread.
