Why oh why has good old fried bread disappeared from Full English breakfasts in cafés and b&bs etc and been replaced with American hash browns ?

Last time I was in a b&b they told me they used hash browns instead of fried bread as it was healthyer , if I want healthy I'll eat yogurt and fruit !

Simple. Most cafes and pubs can't be bothered making fried bread or even flashing a slice of black pudding. Far easier to throw some of those vile American hash brown things in the frier with the sausages.

Not a fan either. I'd pick grated potato cakes over greasy toast any day of the week.

Here in n.Ireland a full Ulster fry still has fried soda bread and fried potato bread, but rarely a fried slice of what I would call sandwich bread, which I love on my trips across the water.

If I'm doing a full on breakfast then I want potato products on the plate and toast on the side for fried tomato/bean/egg/sauce dipping as needed. Fried sliced potato is great with breakfast. As are hash browns, potato croquettes and on one occasion a potato waffle. Not a massive fan of fried bread unless it's coated in egg first.

Love it. Admittedly it's not great for the diet but once every blue moon can't hurt

I like my bread buttered to soak up the tomato juice and egg yolk.
