Babysitters...

What's the going rate for babysitters nowadays? I don't leave my lad with anyone but family but I quite often get mesaages asking for meets and when I say I can't get away they suggest I find a babysitter..

I don't have a great deal of disposable income so doubt it would be feasible to just up and out and pay someone to watch my boy but I was just wondering what the rate is??

Ive just re-read my OP, what I meant I wouldn't ever leave my lad with anyone but family. I also don't have any close friends with daughters of a suitable age that I would trust to watch him although im sure people are less paranoid than me and are lucky to know people that could help. Ha!

Way over Yonder, that's where I'm bound

I have no idea what people charge or pay these days. We have a circle of friends who all take it in turns.

If I was closer I would do it for my usual rate: hand me the television remote and show me how to use your oven. I bring my own food and drink.

If you ever need a babysitter and we are available we would happily babysit for you Hottie! (Free) All you got to do is yell!

Haven't a clue what the going rate is mind you, bar of chocolate and a can of pop?

I pay £5 per hour which I think is on the lower scale ~ I know others that pay between £7-£10 per hour.

I have a teenager who does the odd bit of sitting but for anything major I always book my sitter as she's a lovely person & has looked after her for years.

They'd better put on a dog and pony show for £7-£10 an hour!!! Back in my day we didn't get that stacking shelves in tesco and they just sit around watching TV!

We pay £20 to our babysitter (when we are actually able to work out when she or we are available) but that is a set rate so we could be out for 2 hours or out until the early hours of the morning.

Aw thanks. But seeing as I rarely go out mum is usually on hand. Just the messages saying 'get a sitter' got me thinking it can't be cheap once you've paid out a few hours!!

If I had to entertain too I doubt Bill Gates could afford me (no offense to anyone in this thread, I'm sure your kids are lovely).

Yup. If I went out and paid a sitter for 5/6 hours I wouldn't be able to afford to go out! Ha. Mum is very handy she only lives up the road and hes fine there and sleeps over so I don't have to worry about being back for w certain time or being woken at 6 when my head prob isn't feeling too peachy!

In your bed

We trade sleep overs. Which is easier with one child than 2 or more.

Failing that we are considering a local neighbour.

We generally aim for the not dying principle. As ours are in bed before we leave.

Worst case scenario would be a bed time story and the odd returning to bed of a disturbed child.

Entertainment is a whole other level. I'd think £20 unless it was a very late night.

Yep I recon trading with someone you know and he plays with has to work well . then no money has to be exchanged. just trade off .

Im sure your Mum is pretty understanding tho. you need to go out a bit.. No one ever asks me to baby sit any more pity Im not closer . As long as I have a telly a computer and some flap jacks im fine.

My daughter gets £25 for a long evening or more if it goes beyond 1 in the morning. For a short evening she gets £20.

It may sound a lot but she won't give up an evening for less.

That's understandable. But if I paid someone to do it I wouldn't be able to afford to go out. lol x

Don't all single women. Get into clubs for free? And have all their drinks free?

When ours were little and we wanted to go out we just gave them, loads of chocolate, beer and wine, a stack of horror film's to watch, some scissors to run around with. And asked the nice retired dj and Tv personality to who lives in the flat across the road to pop in and check on them occasionally.

Or did we

Never start going out until kids were old enough to stay on their own for real.

It's a real dilemma isn't it, I would never be able to relax when they tiny be ringing home checking every hour.

I do it for a free run at the fridge and snacks and complete control over the remote even if the kids are still up!

But since only a handful of my friends have kids young enough to need babysitting and the parents are still too knackered to face nights out (unexpected babies when you're nearly forty apparently leave you tired) I don't get called in often.

And when I do they're usually home by 11! One of them gets sent home cos of a habit of falling asleep in pubs and at dinner tables!

Not this one doesn't. I don't expect a free night out: I'd rather not go!
