Just had my daughter on the phone heartbroken that she had "only" got C,D,E . In her A levels ."only" am mighty proud of my girl she has three passes more than I ever got but ain't convinced many tears flowing as she thinks she lost any chance of going on to uni have told her calm down have a think re assets and then we shall see . So damn proud of her to be honest

It's an awful lot better than I got too.

You are quite rightly proud of her, A levels aren't easy.

As the poster above said... there will be a choice of options through clearing.

I'm sure she'll find something and it may well turn out to be better than if she got what she was hoping for, as she'll look at places she might not have considered before.

My daughter gets her results today as well. She's at her dads this morning and they don't have internet access, so she's going up to college to get them in just under an hour ...

Well done to your daughter she should be incredibly proud, uni isn't the be all and end all, both my sons decided against it and have great careers, my eldest is the owner of a successful butchers shop at 22 years old his brother is studying for his degree on the job working in the labs at our local hospital - I couldn't be prouder of either of them xx

I think its awful that the be all and end all of life results on those (speaking as someone who, xx years ago aced them, it has only proved that I am as academic as hell, but not much about me personally) - my son has just called too - not what he wanted, but as he was born in the States, he is off there for good in two weeks - to begin his life there. Big wrench, but I know he will be happier there

My a level results were below expectation too, but I went through PCAS clearing, as was, and went to Plymouth Poly.

Which was actually the best thing to ever hapen for me.

There's always a place and expectations may have to change. But it's not a reason to panic

OP, this year is the perfect year for her if she does really want to go to university. She won't get the big offers of £1,000 to choose one but there are more places than ever and they are keen to attract young people to their establishments.

She has done well to stick with it, turn up and pass. She has achieved the passport to that next stage. Of course this bit is hard - she has pinned her hopes on doing better over the last two years. At her age that's a long, long time. Help her focus on moving to the next stage and using the passport she has to do that.

I did well at college but dropped out of uni. I now do my dream job after a while they stop looking at grades I find. For universities though a good personal statement makes all the difference. All the beat to her the world is her oyster xx

Honest.

Someone WILL want her.

Not only that I don't know anyone who still does what they wanted to do when they first went to UNI.

We all diversify once we qualify and gain experience.

She'll be fine xxx

Well just had a rather emotional follow up call from her bouncing around the house as she's been accepted for her first choice uni to do physcolagy and criminology . Had to drop forensics but can do it as a foundation later on so absolutely buzzing .lots of years of happiness this time waaaaashooo my little girl is going to uni !!!!!!!!!!

It is such a stressful time for kids...

But also a welcome to the real world..

They now had to make decisions that will change their lives......

My daughter went the uni way...but it wasn't for my son.....they are both happy with their chosen paths.....

It's also a tough time for parents...

One of my friends was crying her eyes out.......

Life doesn't have a set path...i wish all the kids who have big decisions to make ...all the luck in the world x

It is so difficult to console them isn't It. Well done to her for her great achievement is what we say! She has every chance of finding a place with a little effort but it is NOT the end of the World. We have a wide circle of friends many of whom are extremely successful people and never had a Uni education at all.

Maybe but degrees have become extremely devalued anyway and still plenty of ways to have a good life without one as well and when you say "You need to read a bigger book" it's rather insulting as you know nothing about us. I am degree educated and ran my own very successful business for many years. The most successful of my employee's had not been formerly indoctrinated into the degree culture which left them free to express their own talents in an environment that encouraged them to do so.

Congratulations to her, she bettered my wee D in physics all those years ago. Mind you I still got to go to my first choice of uni, just had to delay it until I was a mature student. Life has pleanty to teach in the time between.

Not to mention that the degree was all the more satisfying as well. Only downside, is other than getting me a job, I dont use any of the knowledge the degree provided in my working life, and most people don't appear to belive I even have one.

Unfortunately these days the degree has been so watered down that a masters is meeded to stand out in the job marketplace.

That's roughly what I got (B,C, Fail I think). I won't lie, it's been a fucking hard ten years, where for almost five years I was doing courses to prove that I was good enough to get into university. At 28 I got a place at uni and am just about to enter my second year - and I'm one of the highest achievers in the class.

It's going to be hard for her. She's going to struggle to get a place. And if she gets a place then she's going to potentially struggle at uni too.

But if she really wants it, then she'll work all the extra hours she can find in order to get a good mark. Which is what I'm doing.

I wasn't fine. I was trapped in shit, low earning jobs with no prospects.

University is a key for young people, it unlocks doors.

Two members of my family had to do degrees later in life, at great expense, because they hadn't done one when they were young and now needed one to progress any further in their careers.

Your book isn't the only one on the shelf.

Schools are quite to blame here, they push the kids so much who are left feeling if they get a C or below they have failed. Even an F is a pass - only thing that is a fail is a U (ungraded).

My daughter too an apprenticeship instead of Uni and has just passed her last exams and is now a fully qualified Accountant - earlier than she would have if she had gone to Uni and debt free.

It's about what you enjoy. I'm hoping to spend a total of seven years in university education. Perhaps eight if I decide to do a teaching qualification too.

Why? I love it. And I have a career that allows me to earn money on the site (as a direct result of being at uni).

I have all this to come & in the not too distant future, will be interesting to see which pathway we go down.

Whilst I agree Uni opens doors for young people it isnt a viable choice for all, hence the apprenticeship route.

and there is room for all types of books on the shelf, it's a large one after all.....

I got the same in mine all those years ago and I dropped out of Uni in year 2 of a BEng in Civil Engineering due to a family crisis, but I look back now and I am probably in a better job etc than I would have been if I followed through and went back to qualify. Well done to her, they are only letters and not a limitation. The world is open to her

Update - he on clearing has now got in on his first choice, deferred a year, as he originally intended - Sports Psychology - I came out of Unit debt creek full grant as we were a 'poor' family - those were the days!
