Ian Hamiltion captain Parachute Regiment one of the most highly decorated offiers in British army served in Ireland bosnia Afahanstan and Iraq. But in 2007 Ian became the first officer in history of Armed Forces to undergo a sex-change to become jan from a child he new he was born in the wrong body and for years he had been living a lie being a man, He even become a paratrooper to see if that would help . On tv last night it documents the journey him into this feminine woman Jan battled with an inner turmoil for years . Her friends and family all did not wish to have nothing to do with her . And she missed them and loved them so much his mum and dad everyone he loved left him when he become jan...... I wish i could have just put my arms around him/her was really sad as Ian had been living with jan inside him for years. Army who he had been with years all turnd there backs on him becoming jan....... Its a sad world when we cant be the person we wish to be ... its not selfish some people are porn like this cant help it born in the wrong body wrong sex. JO XX

Fought wars been blown up even . I would be proud if in my family no matter of m/f sex. And the Dad could only say when he was told ..... what would thay say at the Golf-club and really wish he had been killed at war. When he was a man people looked up to him now thay just looked down. To me still brave just being himself still fiting wars in a way. Hope jan find peace and love in life. Looking at things like this on tv was on channel 4 really did open my eyes to this must be hell living your life and not being yourself.

I saw this programme a cpl of years ago, it's being repeated regularly now if anyone wants to see it.

I was disgusted at the way the army dropped him, a decorated brave soldier, and his family disowned him.

His ex wife was the only person to support him, even his girl-friend moved out while he was in hospital.

I too wanted to just hold and comfort this lonely person.

I hope he has found some love and company living his new life. xxx

well i like things that make me think and this sure did ....... I am a woman was born that way .. love being me .... I cant think how it must feel not being youself trapped in wrong boby.... and him in a man world like the Army and feeling like that. you do have to feel for the gf too though, he said he wished she was a lesbian, and he didnt tell her he'd felt that way since a child, then it comes out gradually as he starts with clothes of hers etc and progresses onward with make up etc,,, she had no idea at the beginning and stayed with him as a friend and saw men for her sexual needs, but how can she be expected to stay in that relationship or turn lesbian to keep it going, its so sad on her part too.

Family and friends didn't know Jan only Ian...

Maybe they have a choice to be friends with who they like.

Of course it not what Ian hoped when he became Jan, but i'm sure it was all explained to him/her during the process.

I wish everyone can be happy with the choices they make.

yes i did feel for his gf and ex wife as he loved them very much. But felt he could not cope with telling them untill he felt ready he could no longer live like it living a lie. And his ex wife only woman who did chat to him and meet him when he become jan.

but even then she wasnt too happy was she...i can understand it though from the wife/gf side, if you committed yourself and your heart/feelings to a person who knew the whole time that something wasn't right that could potentially damage the relationship and hurt the person you suposedly loved you, you'd think they'd put your future and feelings above finding it hard to come out about? It's like i know a guy at work who was married to his wife for 25 years and new the whole time he was really gay, he eventually came out about it and left her devastated and alone, it's so unfair, in the Ian/jan story he says how unfiar he was treated by the army and relatives etc... what about the 2 women he wasn't honest to?

Ian was never sure if he was going to come out tell the world but ...after being in the wars and army having a go at coving it all up he could not cope living like it. I think thats why he hurt the 2 woman so close to him x

I know some people might find this situation hard to put themselves into but this does happen to people.

For me family is family no matter what you still love them. Our bodies are after all only a carrier for our real persona.

and some of the people posting on this subject have some wonderful carriers of there personas, the last 2 ladies for sure, ah well theres a positive from all this, Ian/Jan got me some eye candy and a good natter for the evening

Its all very said. I can understand the girlfriend not wanting to be with him. But the army and his parents should stick by him. Im broadmined and non judgemental but like most i dont know what its like to be born in the wrong body, if my son came to me i would hope i could support him all the way. How can any parent turn their back on their child that is going through such a difficult time

Agree: I can't imagine what my girls could do to make me turn against them: my love is unconditional.

I feel for the girlfriend and Jan seems a little selfish to me. If I fell for someone and they decided to have a sex change I wouldn't hang around.

Also you can't have females in the parachute regiment, they aren't even allowed to do P company. Personally I think it's cos they don't want to be shown up by women!

Yeah the guy I dated had been in the Para's since he was 17, would list all the reasons why they couldn't have women (some were genuine) but that's all part of the thing for them, it's drummed into them that they're 'the elite' he was still scared of me though!

And,if it is banned,what should become of the people who have already undergone reassignment? Should they have to be re-re assigned? At whose expense? I don't think the person who said it should be banned has thought this through very well at all.

I went to my army reunion last April and one of our old PTI's came out as gay. I didn't judge him nor did anybody else I knew. To us he was the guy who beasted us young soldiers in the gym or on long tabs. I asked him why he kept it quiet for so long as he's nearing 60. He explained that he didn't want to lose his old friends. I just shock his hand and told him not to worry to us lot he's still evil Eddie the beast master. Then being an ex squaddie I told him that he's only gay because he was to fucking ugly to get a woman. The good thing about squaddie banter is that however much you insult each other we were , are and always will be both friends and brothers in arms.

As yet no woman has passed P Company. It is very tough and many men fail it. There has been plenty of female soldiers who have jumped with the parachute regiment , although they have not been badged. One day one will pass it and that will inspire others. Good luck to them.

One the young lads in my section recently came out to me after a few problems he was having fitting in and i have no issue with it at all.

Like i said to him mums the word and wont ever break that trust he put in me because its like you say a brothers in arms thing.

She joined Strathclyde Police, after leaving the army, but had problems there too. I know that she is no longer known as Jan Hamilton either, and recently fronted a TV documentary on trans life in the USA.
