My daughter plays football she is 22 and has been playing since she was 6 years an international for her country Wales and has been all over the world and just completed a 4 year soccer scholarship in America... she has just gone to Poland this week to compete in the UEFA champions league for Cardiff and has now experienced her first racist attack... we are mixed race and I was born and bred in Wales and have never experienced any thing like this... it is so frustrating that people can be so small minded about a person they do not know. Has anyone else experienced this ? She is really upset

Oh wow! What an achievement for her! Other than the fact my own lineage is often questioned, no couldn't help on the other score

There are a few problems with the old Eastern Block regarding attitudes to race and homophobia.

Wasn't there an incident in Russia recently?.

Good for her for doing so well, life is not always plain sailing and it's best to treat the bad times as lessons in life's big adventure.

Sorry to hear that. Sadly racism is rife everywhere but particularly in the old Eastern Bloc. I think there's a huge powder keg waiting to explode in the World Cup in Russia in 2018.

All you can do is report to the authorities, be vocal about it and push for action, and I know it's easier said than done but hopefully your daughter can brush it off, realise that some people are ignorant twats, have pity on them and move on with her life with her head held high that she's achieved something in her life representing her country!

Its actually well known in Poland and even the top premiership players get it to, wisla Krakow teams supporter are the worst.

Remind her of her achievements and the lack of such on the part of the racists.

It's difficult as you cannot change your colour and it's such a stupid attack to make on another person. Sadly, it's still around (just read some of the threads on here) and when you fight back (logically, verbally, never violently) you get accused of playing the race card.

I hope she finds her voice, the strength to stare them down and the dignity to know they have the failings not her.

Thanks for your comments guys...its just so frustrating how their parents bring them up to be so ignorant... but at least I know I've brought her up to accept everyone no matter what creed or colour.. you know what she said after her and her team mates cried...Mum I just prayed for them

Yes, my son plays professionally too - and is an international player at 16. When growing up in a small community he did, but now he is professional and we are getting a nice tidy sum for it, its two fingers up to them - he has been stereotyped all the way through school, because he is a footballer and I had to fight to keep him in the top sets (to do the higher GCSEs) because he is mixed race too - its inherent in our society as well, despite being not as blatantly obvious. All he used to say was, why are they so mean to me, mum - as a white mum I can't really pretend to understand but my first instinct is to fight for him because of who he is and how hard he has worked for it. Don't know if that helps?

Teach her to have pride and not to accept bigots. They are out there, I am afraid, as most of us know.

I have no words for the racism I'm afraid, it probably doesn't deserve a response in all honesty but woohoo to your girl! How to make your mama proud just like that! Burst with it lovely because that reaction is a very obvious sign that you did a good job.

Without wishing to appear racist in saying this it is a common problem among Poles, Latvians, Russians etc......very intolerant in general. Has happened in international games in the past.....

As others have said it's a major achievement on the part of your daughter so you should both be proud of that.

Unfortunately, I have been subject to it and though not going into details, maybe it comes with the territory of well you know looking a bit different. It's weird that those who spout the stupidity seem to get my pity, rather than vitriol or hatred, doesn't mean I don't get angry, or question things.

More fool them I say. I know that I'm alright in the the grand scheme of things, so I win compared to that.
