According to the report I read, the lifeguards did try to get to her but her father was violent and stopped them. When they managed to get away from him it was too late.

Way over Yonder, that's where I'm bound

Girls and women are disposable. At least she remained pure.

The hope in this story is that the rescuers did not think like this father and at least attempted to rescue her. It's all very sad.

Reminds me of that Thai princess who drowned.

"The queen and her daughter drowned when the royal boat capsized while on the way to the Bang Pa-In Royal Palace (Summer palace). Despite the presence of many onlookers, they were forbidden on pain of death to touch the queen – not even to save her life. The grief-stricken Chulalongkorn later erected a memorial to her and his unborn child at the Bang Pa-In Palace."

That's sad. I think I, with my Western thinking, would have risked it and tried to rescue her. I'd hope an exception to the rule would be made for saving her life.

Having lost a childhood friend who was sexually assaulted and impregnated by her uncle and then died during childbirth because her parents refused to let her have a blood transfusion, nothing surprises me anymore.

I always thought maternal/paternal instinct and the desire to protect your children should naturally outweigh religion but it's not always the case.

Here occasionally, but mostly somewhere else

I've checked. It's a report from Emirates247 as a result of quotes from one guy. From the quotes, it appears not to be a recent event, and there is no attempt at corroboration by any media organisation.

So, one man's word, slavishly perpetuated by a series of other websites, each with a vested interest in having headlines that attract people to click on their ad-filled pages.

I can't prove it didn't happen but I'm far from convinced that it did.

Sorry, I didn't mean that you should prove anything, I was just asking if you had found a second source, because all I see are the "host of news outlets" restating the original Emirates247 story, usually crediting it as the source.

More media outlets reporting it doesn't make it more true, but it does mean that the story being accurate becomes more important - if 1,000 people read it on Emirates247 that's one thing, but when the mirror, mail, telegraph etc are all passing it on, that's millions of people.

I accept that I can't prove it's false (as I already said). What I think I'm entitled to is a healthy degree of scepticism as to the diligence of the journalists passing this (or indeed any other story) off without checking. I'm sure we've all used the phrase "well, if it was in the papers it must be true" as a sarcastic expression of this kind of problem.

We're I to be a journalist, i'd be contacting the Dubai search and rescue service, asking for the date this happened, the name of the man prosecuted, and the sentence he received. I'd also want to know what prompted this deputy director to bring this story to light - it's not as if Dubai's a beacon of progressiveness, is it? Is his an elected position? Is the post above him currently vacant?

Again - not expecting anyone on this thread to answer any of that, but neither am I prepared to swallow whatever the media chooses to peddle - no matter how many of them are effectively Retweeting it!

No sorry that is completely untrue so I'm informed

Stone age ,tsk , don't be so insulting they are mainly late iron age cults

All of the good books only teach humans to love each other that is all nothing else , never even a suggestion how a person may best live a life ?

And the vast majority of people accross the whole world who have belief in such things , objectively disregard any of the interpretations and implications of topics within the texts that would produce any negativity or disharmony between other humans ,

The odd one we rarely hear from is simply insane and without any support or validation from peers or leaders, and complete misunderstanding of totally Unambiguous texts they randomly decide with no reason or explanation to carry out actions they dishonestly claim are explicit within certain text

Either way being old or new it highlights the difference between religions ? Good or bad ? Also the way that some cultures treat there own !

So is it any wonder that our outlook on how we look after people is often abused ?

My experience is off a local in a country who scalded with water his daughter in order to get food and water from us ?

Seems that the women were possessions not human beings?

A lot of people seem to have the misconception that this way of thinking is derivative of one religion or other. the attitudes of the father in the article are not religious ones, they are founded in out dated traditions and beliefs local to certain areas. But I agree with a lot of the people above in being sceptical. Stories like this are spread like wildfire because regardless of the religion of the man in question, most people in our society automatically asume he is Muslim and shoot me for saying it but the media helps reinforce the vilification of Islam.

Yep - commonfolk can't really be blamed because of the way it was reported by the above.

"Apparently the article – which originated on the website Emirates 24/7 – was from an interview in which lifeguards were asked to recount the strangest things that had happened to them."

They mentioned this case of the Asian man who prevented his daughter’s rescue - an event which occurred in 1996.

While I would love to blame the Daily Mail, this time it wasn't them. They all seem to have got it from one middle eastern site, whose motives remain a mystery.

How do you know it's not true?

Did you perhaps read it in a newspaper... The very same media which your declaring to be biased!

Maybe the question should be, if there misreporting about that, what else are they misreporting about and who's pushing the lies, oops, I mean misreporting and what's the reason?

"Has anyone bothered to check if this is true!

The word sheep comes to mind.

Yeh, WAKE UP, SHEEPLE!"

Google it rather than just being generally rude to folk, several media sources have reported it.

"Profile Brumies and SharplyDressedMan

You are the ONLY TWO people I want on the jury when I am tried.

This story has no evidence base. NONE.

It may be reported in the media but it's obviously picked up by those who interpret it as they want it interpreted.

Some 'officials' were asked to recount the strangest story they'd ever heard.

The 'NEWS' as some call it was simply an ANECDOTE told by one man. What's more it was supposed to have happened in 1996.

Not NEWS no EVIDENCE. Just a STORY.

.

How do you know it's not true?

Did you perhaps read it in a newspaper... The very same media which your declaring to be biased!

Maybe the question should be, if there misreporting about that, what else are they misreporting about and who's pushing the lies, oops, I mean misreporting and what's the reason?"

The Independant, August 2015.

"He said: “The kids were swimming in the beach when suddenly, the 20-year-old girl started drowning and screaming for help.

“Two rescue men were at the beach, and they rushed to help the girl.

“However, there was one obstacle which prevented them from reaching the girl and helping her.

“This obstacle was the belief of this Asian man who considered that if these men touched his daughter, then this would dishonour her. It cost him the life of his daughter.”

According to Lt Col Burqibah, the man became aggressive, physically pulling the rescue men away from the water and said he “prefers his daughter being dead than being touched by a strange man”.

The girl died in the incident but Lt Col Burqibah said she could have been saved as they were “so to her to pull her out of the water” when her father intervened.

The man was later prosecuted for stopping the rescue team from doing its job.

It is unclear exactly when the incident is alleged to have happened, although one report suggested it dates back as far as 1996."

So even if it was 1996, does that make it any less abhorrent that a man would rather see his daughter die than be rescued by strange men? That's a mixed up 'culture'.

It's an even more mixed up leftie run press we have that this was not world wide news and condemnation of the culture that allows this to happen.

You want to condemn an entire culture of milions based on this story?

Here occasionally, but mostly somewhere else

Good grief, this again?

I DID Google it at the time, and your "several news sources" ALL COPIED IT FROM THE SAME SOURCE. That isn't multiple sources, that's ***ONE***

Even the report from the Indie that you subsequently quoted can't do better than "if it happened at all it was 20 years ago". In other words there is no actual proof that this happened - it's hearsay from some policeman doing the equivalent of telling a tall story in the pub.

It's then used (and re-used) to foster increases in religious bigotry, which does no one any good.

Odd thread to bump back up.

Not a nice story to hear even if it was almost 10 years ago
