I was prescribed a particular hearing aid for tinnitus,it emits white noise sounds.I am supposed to wear it at night, but I find it very uncomfortable when I lie on that side of my head.I would be interested in learning more about this pill you mention.

There is a way to help it yourself. I can't find the link at the moment but I'll try to remember and post it later.

Just distract yourself and if its not too bad maybe you can ignore it .. I've got an annoying collection of whistles that play .. But I find the radio distracts me

I have had tinnitus for a year now, I was referred to my local ENT department, for a hearing test, and it shows that I have hearing loss in both ears but am just under the average in the right ear and just above it in the left, so now have an aid for the right ear. I only wear it when it's particularly bad. I doubt very much a pill is going to work as tinnitus is only your own body;s functions you are hearing as it's your brain's way of coping with hearing loss, so it works harder to try and make the ears work and the noise you are hearing is your blood going through your veins. The more you think about the noise the more you hear it

C L O C K S! Having a clock ticking somewhere nearby helps a great deal, as you can train yourself to listen to the soft ticking instead of the tinnitus sounds.

Tinnitus is also an excellent barometer of health and wellbeing, as it is worse when you are ill or off colour, or tired. So when it is bad take an aspirin, and treat yourself to an early night.

Just a question: if it's the blood through the veins that you can hear or the brain - why is everyones 'noise' different?

I use the white noise app as It only really bothers me when I try and read. It's quite nice to sit and read and play some rainstorm sounds or waves.

I can cope with going to sleep at the moment with it as my bulldogs snoring is enough to cancel it out.

Yes. Apparently to do with the bubbles. It's a while since I read it and the woman was only speaking for herself so I don't know if it would help others or not.

I have two separate sounds, one is a ticking at quite a high pitch and the other is a continuous whine at a lower pitch. If I hear one or the other in both ears I'm fine but when they split into different ears and/or suddenly change volume in either ear then my concentration is affected, my hearing loss seems worse and my balance is difficult to maintain.

How long have you had it?

I don't remember anything about a new pill on the BTA website but there is a homeopathic treatment you can buy, which has as many detractors as fans.

I've had mine for ten years now and it's the norm to be honest. Mine is 24 / 7 so never goes away. I agree with distractions, it certainly helps.

Distraction works with me but at night, it's just too loud. Clocks, watches, anything just disturbs me.

One good thing is I am good at hearing anything dodgy outside.

I've heard about the sound treatment but I read it's not cheap.

I don't think it is treatable. They are just coping mechanisms and you have to figure out what is best for you.

Mr F has tinnitus, we sleep with a fan on. The noise seems to help him. Great in the middle of winter..

I'll keep my eye on this thread.

agree with what all others have said really..

Haven't heard of a pill but have a friend who's getting ok with the white noise hearing aid.

Mine is predominantly in my left ear. Too many years of clubs and shooting have left me with a high pitched whine....

Try the background noise apps for sleeping, they can help.

Have you tried a noise machine? You can get ones preset with sounds like the sea and woodland noises.

I'm not an ENT specialist, but I thinks it's wise not to think of tinnitus as one condition. It could be conditions in the ear or brain - or both and nearby.

Treatments work variously for people, potentially due to causes and personal variation.

I have it in both ears, or seemingly in both ears. I'm not aware of newly available treatments - though it's interesting. White noise does little for me.

Stress may be a contributory factor, so I aim to keep mine low.

There was a treatment called Ultraquiet therapy, mentioned in the Daily Mail - it's usually that paper and the Daily Express that report on 'breakthrough' treatments.

I've seen some research on it, from the early 2000's, so it's been trialed and evaluated for some time.

There is a drug under research atm too. It's in its second phase of trial, and they're looking for people who've had tinnitus for less than 18 months, but more than 6 months: exciting for anyone here who could be eligible. The company behind the drug is Autifony, and their trial is in conjunction with the UK government clinical trials board. It's a month long dosing trial, in conjunction with a range of UK hospital, including London, Nottingham, Sheffield, Plymouth, Telford, Frimley, Newcastle and others: I'm only seeing English sites, unfortunately.

If it works, it would still have to go through further trials and approval, prior to introduction. Obviously anyone going through a trial drug programme would face risks too.
