Just watching something about them on TV.

What would you expect from a 5* hotel?

Somewhere in North Norfolk

Pretty much whatever I wanted, as long as I was willing to pay for it.

That's what a concierge service is for

To be treated as an individual by the staff.

A decent amount of square metre bedroom wise.

Luxurious bathroom & toiletries.

A fabulous restaurant & bar.

Swimming pool / Spa.

Not much really....

I stayed in a 3***+ hotel in Turkey in May

And I would def rate the room and hotel in general a 3***, if not a 4**** rating. The food however was poor.

Stayed in a 5***** hotel in Egypt and definitely wouldn't rate it a 5*****. The rooms were a 2** at a push. The food and hotel in general was worth a 4****

The star * rating is a wee bit flawed because it varies so dramaticly from country to country

For example a 5* property in a city like NYC would be superior to an equivalent * rating in say Marmaris / Sharm.

Yes, I understand that, but I was confused by the ratings from Turkey/Egypt.

That's because what gives a hotel it's star rating varies depending on the region

For example in Turkey the food maybe the top criteria for a high star rating

Egypt it could be the facilities such as swimming pool / recreation / entertainment.

Italy the cleanliness of rooms.

And so on....

it can be very confusing at times!

I'd like them have an poverty option where guests can choose to stay in a very basic budget room but still pay premium room rate which the hotel then donates to a homeless charity.....
