Talking to a GP drinking buddy a few weeks back I learned he's seen more shingles in the previous fortnight than the rest of the year.

Same here, but more on the side of my face, neck and shoulder, and I too get a recurring pain every now and again. It feels like a sponge with needles pressing into my skin, s sort of smooth prickly painfull pressure. Hard to describe really

Not good... get better soon.

Get to the docs and get that paint stuff you apply to them.. think if you get them early enuf, it makes a difference.

It is sore, good luck with the pain relief.

I've never had shingles, not chicken pox as a child. my two kids have had c/pox, littleun only just recently. We visited friends who's two kids both had c/pox but still I haven't contracted them.

I have asked my mother if I'd had them as a child and she says no, I didn't.

We think I'm immune to them, so hopefully that'll mean shingles too as they're the adult version of c/pox so I believe.

We think I'm immune to them, so hopefully that'll mean shingles too as they're the adult version of c/pox so I believe."

From the BBC Health website.

"Most adults - about 95 per cent - have been exposed to chickenpox and are immune, even though many aren't aware of it (they may have had only a mild dose of chickenpox when they were young). However, a small number of adults aren't immune and will be at risk. Also, when the immune system is suppressed (for example, when someone is being treated for cancer), a person can catch chickenpox for a second time."

It also says

"The skin blisters that form in shingles are full of the chickenpox virus, which means a person with shingles is infectious. You can catch chickenpox from someone with shingles, if you've never had the infection and therefore aren't immune. But you can't catch shingles from someone with shingles (or someone with chickenpox)."

Clear as mud.

I never contracted chicken pox as a child, but developed shingles for the first time at the age of 29 whilst on holiday in Cornwall. Drove the 600 miles home dressed only in my boxers overnight as I couldn`t cope with any clothes touching my skin.

ive had shingles 7 times in the last 20 years .it can be really painfull but best to strike early and get the meds as quick as you can ..if its really painfull u can buy lignocaine spray which really really helps with the pain .havnt had an attack for 2 years so fingers crossed it doesnt hit me again !!it tends to hit you when u are down tho !!

i thought you could only get shingles if you HAD had chicken pox ??? my poor daughter had it when she was 7 ! shed had chicken pox as a baby and developed the shingles just after we had moved house ....there was me thinking it was a reaction to a new skirt or washing powder i was gob smaked when the doc said it was shingles ..you tend to associate it with older people ..i Had to get a neighbour to do the treatment cos it was so painful i couldnt inflict the pain on her myself !!
