"Called a racist for calling someone a 'jap'

Who the fuck is he?

If he used the word in a derogatory way or intended to cause offence with it then the course of action is right. Whether it ruins his career or not depends on what his career is and how he deals with the situation I guess.

If he is in the public eye then he needs to be aware of the things he us saying and the potential damage using derogatory words can do.

You may not think jap is too bad a word but it was used as a negative term against Japanese people in the past which is why there has been this reaction I should imagine.

Nonsense. No more racist than calling me a Scot instead of Scottish..... where's the difference?

The world has gone mad. The political correctness brigade have a lot to answer for.

Its no wonder some people are afraid to have an opinion, or say anything publicly for fear that the PC police are lying in wait to ambush them...!

I've never heard anyone say "Yo Brit, walk on".

He was trying to be derogatory on top of being arrogant.

But I wouldn't call it racism.

Given the context of how the term.was used why would you feel sorry for him?

The easiest way to not get sacked for being an aggress racist is not to be an aggressive racist. This is even more true when your teams Thai owners have already sacked 3 players this summer for similar behaviour and their manager as a consequence of it.

Well said young man.

As so man have said before and so many have missed or ignored, it's about context. It's also the about the history of racism and oppression which is the larger context. There will always be small minded people who accuse others of being sheep simply because they disagree with them just.

Why can't people grasp the importance of historical context? Cracker and pom aren't considered very offensive because they've never been used in the context of mass human suffering.

Whether or not you find the term 'Jap' offensive is neither here nor there really

The fact of the matter is that he works in an industry where he is expected to be a role model and is expected to act with integrity when in the public eye and any football club will do their best to distance themselves from such things.

If action is taken against him by the club then he really has no complaints.

well no. you are saying "footballers need to be role models." Im guessing you dont own a football club and pay wages to have such an understanding and agreement with any professional footballers ? who are you to expect them to be role models ? And what do you mean by role model ? Have they sold their soul where they need to behave think and act in a way that meets your approval and the approval of the rest of the world 24/7 ? I imagine a cursory glance over your life and plenty of people would have something to say about your life in a critical judgemental fashion.

A "he who casts the first stone" sort of argument isn't constructive here. On that logic, we could start overlooking a lot of things. And then the question of where to draw the line is raised. At what point does a famous person's behaviour become an issue?

Being in the public eye means you have to watch what you say.

You can't mouth off and use someone's race as an insult and expect to be famous and revered for very long!

I think Jap's a rather shit word to offended him with!.

I think it's the context you use it in and to be honest there's the context of what your using it for!

I don't use the word pikey, usually I use gypsy!

But the other day after seeing the trail of utter shit left behind on an illegal camp, asbestos sheets left broken everywhere which there'd ripped off some locals shed for cash, hedge cuttings, dog shit, human shit, bags of rubbish, wrappers, old gas canisters....

I used the phrase bunch of pikey fuck wits.

It summed them up perfectly!

Jamie Vardy is a massive talent,

as written earlier, its a load of old bollocks

brits, scots, yanks, japs, swedes, fins,

etc- so what -it really does not matter

" I imagine a cursory glance over your life and plenty of people would have something to say about your life in a critical judgemental fashion.

A "he who casts the first stone" sort of argument isn't constructive here. On that logic, we could start overlooking a lot of things. And then the question of where to draw the line is raised. At what point does a famous person's behaviour become an issue? "

sorry you dont find it constructive.I think you will find that there is plenty that people in power and authority over look already. which is the basis of my point, hypocrisy double standards. I mean i really do give a fuck about some minor celeb athlete calling someone a jap when there are people dying in the world through dehydration, hunger, cholera and power crazed freaks sending drones overto bomb a school full of children and teachers. I guess its a case of what your priorities are, yours are clear.

Haha, it's not about priorities, it's about being a perfectionist why can't we live in a world without dehydration, hunger and war as well as ethnic sensitivity?

And sure, plenty of misdeeds are overlooked, either staying secret forever or emerging decades later. But that doesn't mean we should ignore instances like this.

And for the record, I am a complete iconoclast. I don't think we should look up to anyone. Though politics and wealth divides us, we're all made from the same flesh and bone. I'm just aware that we live in a world where people think differently, and idolisation is commonplace.

People who are making reference to political correctness going mad clearly haven't grasped the idea of how context can alter the meaning of a word.

Calling a person a Brit isn't really offensive because that term has never been used in a derogatory manner, at least not on a large scale. In contrast, words like paki, jap, ni**er, spic, gook, and all the others originate from some sort of hatred and/or context of human suffering.

I really don't see why that's so hard to understand.

I just saw this. Is this some kind of joke? The law in question is a legal limit on the freedom of expression, which has existed in a variety of different countries in different forms for centuries.

If we didn't have some sort of regulation on expression, I suppose you'd be happy having the neo-nazis holding annual marches in London, graphic abortion footage shown on adverts by pro-life organisations, and columns in every tabloid full of profanity?

If you're offended by any of it, don't look, right? Sure, that's the answer

some of the things you suggest arent a bad idea. why shouldnt pro lifers show graphic scenes of abortion, it might make people more sexually responsible instead of the disposable life policy we now have.

Ive seen graphic pictures on my fag packet so why not abortion. ive seen barnados show graphic scenes of abuse both physical and psychological.

This law is just about the control of people. Neo nazis have the right to march anywhere they choose. To stop them as a group just because you dont agree with their philosophy is just Fascism.which basically is what the pc brigade are, facists. when did we become this bunch of people who cant cope with being offended ?

I will point out that this thread is about someone using the term "Jap". Not someone preaching hate about other people with different views ideas and opinions and calling for them to be be headed in the street like dogs.

"

Um, because children might be watching? I don't want pro-lifers to lack a voice, but unnecessarily graphic scenes that could upset a lot of people isn't cool. Just Because you may have the stomach to look at pictures on your cigarettes doesn't mean everyone does.

"

"

When we tolerated hate groups previously, and a bunch of people were killed, raped, mutilate, and tortured.

I'm struggling to see how telling a hate group they're not allowed to spread their toxic message is fascism. Certain human rights like expressing yourself have always been qualified - you have a certain degree of freedom to say how you feel. However, in a real fascist state, your unpopular view gets you imprisoned or killed.

"

I will point out that this thread is about someone using the term "Jap".

"

Mmm,i agree, but the previous arguments share the same underlying principle - where does freedom of expression stop?

I can't clarify my "jap" point any further. It's all about its context.

The term Jap is a racist slur, just as Nigger and Paki are.

Because there has been worse racial abuse doesn't make it any less racist.

Since when, in the case of unacceptable behaviour, has it ever been right to ignore it because sometimes worse happens.

I'm also willing to bet that everyone here shouting about how it isn't racist, (as if they would know how being on the receiving end of it feels), would be shouting equally loudly if it had been them that was abused.

I'm actually ashamed to be the same species as some of the posters on these fora sometimes.

I'm actually ashamed to be the same species as some of the posters on these fora sometimes."

Sorry but that is complete left wing based rubbish.

"Called a racist for calling someone a 'jap'

What a load of old bollocks. Poor blokes career could be ruined over nothing.

Who the fuck is he?

Just another mediocre footballer, only Leicester City fans will have heard of him "

He is actually a fairly good English footballer if you have looked at his rise to playing in a prem team

he is also an England player although that might have gone out of the window now after his awful behaviour

yes i am an avid and besotted leicester City fan, season ticket holder and also go to most away games

i have watched the video (or part of it anyway) and think he should go even though that will be bad for my beloved team

there is no way to excuse racisim

It was singling out someone due to their race, never in a million years would he shout 'English' or whatever. The club sacked 3 players recently and that wasn't clear cut but had racist connotations - interested to see how they deal with this one.

It doesn't help solve a bigger picture really, but it's good seeing it as an issue being worked towards.

It should be taken in the context just like calling someone a ginger cunt a fat cunt or a 4 eyed cunt. No more no less.

So if this is going to far you are basically saying it is okay to use terms like nigger and paki? So if this is to far where are you drawing the line? Verbal abuse is okay? Is physical assault? Do share with us what you think is far enough?

And is for your Brixton reference, it's about gentrification, it's effecting people of many ethnicities and your statement of 'black people moaning about white people' is so simplistic it only highlights how uninformed you actually are on that issue.

It's still very easy for you to spout off about what is and is not offensive when you are not the one being attacked.

Why would it seem offensive to you when it wasn't something you can relate to or understand?

It's absolute narcissism to think that the only things that matter are the things that matter to you and to expect the world to be run according to your values.

I'd hate to have so little consideration and empathy.

some of the things you suggest arent a bad idea. why shouldnt pro lifers show graphic scenes of abortion, it might make people more sexually responsible instead of the disposable life policy we now have.

drivel and a complete ignorance on what fascism is.

Um, because children might be watching? I don't want pro-lifers to lack a voice, but unnecessarily graphic scenes that could upset a lot of people isn't cool. Just Because you may have the stomach to look at pictures on your cigarettes doesn't mean everyone does.

This law is just about the control of people. Neo nazis have the right to march anywhere they choose. To stop them as a group just because you dont agree with their philosophy is just Fascism.which basically is what the pc brigade are, facists. when did we become this bunch of people who cant cope with being offended ?

When we tolerated hate groups previously, and a bunch of people were killed, raped, mutilate, and tortured.

I'm struggling to see how telling a hate group they're not allowed to spread their toxic message is fascism. Certain human rights like expressing yourself have always been qualified - you have a certain degree of freedom to say how you feel. However, in a real fascist state, your unpopular view gets you imprisoned or killed.

I will point out that this thread is about someone using the term "Jap".

Mmm,i agree, but the previous arguments share the same underlying principle - where does freedom of expression stop?

I can't clarify my "jap" point any further. It's all about its context. "

No, some seem to be able to realise it's wrong without experiencing it. That comes from the empathy and understanding you appear to be lacking in this case.

Anyone who has been subject to a history of racial discrimination and abuse should know better than to condone it happening to others.

Young girls of all races in areas of Britain have been sexually abused by Asian men.

People in power refused to do anything for fear of being called a racist.

This is the reason I think we have gone to far with race issues in this country.

Like I said previously shouting racism to people every time some one says something to another race takes away the real issues of racism

My mate is from NZ. tried to get in a emergency response team. He kept getting turned down even tho he was a fireman in NZ. After his 6th attempt he was taken aside and asked to put Maori down has his ethnic background. He got accepted straight away. The reason. They were doing a recruitment drive to get more ethnic minorities in the job.

This is classed as positive discrimination . It's happening across all public sector services. Ticking boxes rather then the right man for the job.

Football is looking at the Rooney rule. Again. Quotas not the right man for the job.

I think it probably ought to be clear by now that those that appear to be concerned about Vardy's behaviour at the casino stipulate the importance of establishing intent and context.

For instance: spray painting the word 'paki' on an Asian person's car could be considered offensive because a) it's vandalism and b) the vandal is highlighting the car owner's place of origin to remind him that he's not from 'over here', or that it is a bad thing to come from 'over there'

On the other hand, there are instances on this thread where 'paki' has been used in a non offensive, descriptive manner.

A difference can be gleaned and It doesn't require one to be overly receptive of nuance.

Now, I don't think Vardy is necessarily racist. At most it appears that he angrily used the Japanese fellas place of origin in a negative way. He clearly wasn't being friendly.

Many real issues other then a bit of name calling during a row especially using a commonly used term. That's just a shortened version of the real name.

Isn't the Rooney rule a way of ensuring qualified ethnic candidates are given an interview?

There is no compulsion to hire the ethnic candidate. Just giving people a fair shot.

Hopefully ability will prevail.

Are you also upset that major companies such as PWC will ignore the qualifications of candidates and hide them from interviewers so as to not be prejudiced/influenced by achievements - and instead judge the interview on its own merit.

The reason is so poorer, less 'qualified'/financially supported people are given more of a chance than they are currently recieving.

The system can be skewed - some people are rightly or wrongly trying to redress the imbalance.

It's not an urban myth it's real time and it's happening in every town across the country.

Say anything and your deemed a racist.

So to clarify to prove it's nit an urban myth you have used an anecdote about a friend who for vall we know doesn't exist?

Do you have anything more substantial. Else I'll have to tell you about my mate down the pub and how he only gives jobs to the white brits"

I've got a mate down the pub who's Japanese. He says the term Jap isn't insulting at all and he's Japanese so he should know. He says he loves being called a Jap. It's even better, he reckons, if people make jokes about slitty eyes.

True story*

*or maybe not.

The Duke of Edinburgh is well known for saying unacceptable things though. If he says it, it's virtually certain to be offensive in some way of another.

It isn't . And it's not just my view . Many others do to.

if someone's offended, he should appoligise, it certainly sounds as though it was confrontational or aggressive... but as said context is everything....

pc has gone mad....

black rappers and comedians/ entertainers calling each other the n word... highly offensive...

gay and lesbians calling each other puffs/ queens and dykes... definitely offensive...

some say its 'reclaimed' language that they can use because they recognise the oppression and negativity of the former use and meanings.... does this become 'exclusionary' language as heterosexual or other ethnicities are therefore not allowed to share the terms thereby increasing segregation and building barriers????

my view is shouting jap, pac** nig**R or any other term that is likely to be offensive you are asking for trouble....

for discussion .........
