Reading various pieces about what has happened to this charity.... Still puzzled by the fact it appears to have been supported by tax payers money ....

The fiscal responsibility - or not - of the charity is a matter aside.

As a charity, your reputation for 'doing good' is your biggest card. Their only funder (the government) has woken up to the fact that a charismatic leader isn't enough to run an organisation.

Multiple funding sources could have smoothed this over but she's been Blair, Brown & Cameron's darling for years.

I wonder if some wages etc were a little high. It's hard to know, from the outside how things have really been. Seemingly a large budget but the kids appear to love the service.

So they were given a £3m 'grant' last week to continue doing what they were but only after some revelations concerning 'financial improprieties' and an historical issue involving inappropriate care given by a staff member.

The money was given to Kds Co on the proviso that Camila Batmanghelidjh stood down as CEO.

This week, following further 'revelations' about how they 'carelessly' spend their money and further details of other care 'failures', senior civil servants (who have been voicing concerns for a while about Kids Co) finally got their way and funding was pulled.

The G'ment are seeking their £3m back - hence the closure.

Transformation and downsizing is all very well, but if the "bread and butter" isnt there its kind of pointless.

Difficult choice, but correct in my opinion.

£37m received from the state over the years. If the state thinks this is a valuable service it should run it itself with proper governance rather than handing over huge amounts of cash to an institution which looks like it was well intentioned but ultimately out of its depth. I just hope all of the cash received can be accounted for and it doesn't transpire that pockets have been lined in dubious circumstances.

A lot of charities don't understand that they need to be properly run ie like a business on a day to day basis to function. Some charities like Oxfam take it to the other extreme.

Renting Wembley stadium to serve up Christmas dinner sounds a little extreme to me. Giving jobs to people you were formally helping and still paying them when they don't turn up, taking into consideration that their wages are made up from voluntary donations is reprehensible.

The way she dresses and courts the media always made me feel it was very much about her and less so about a worthy cause.

As g'ment cuts bite, it is expected that charities, with corporate or individual sponsors, take up the slack.

But that requires charities to be more pushy...

I think the full story will take time to come out here. However I recall earlier this year some legislation was passed that stopped funding to charities that spoke out about anything that might be construed to be political. Because of the reason behind their existence there are a number of charities that will naturally speak out about social mobility and caring for disadvantaged, food banks etc.

So to me there seems to be a general feeling within govt not to give money to charities that they may feel communicate inconvenient truths.

Much of what's been said is rumour, but is just enough for people to have doubt about Kids Company.

There are plenty other organisations where much more concrete things have happened than the rumours that exist around Kids Company now, where it takes a lot of ime before anything is done. I'm suspicious about how the media are rounding on the charity and yet nothing solid is out in the public domain.

Heard an interview with her on The wireless this morning, she blamed everyone bar the milkman for the demise of the charity. Utterly refuted everything she said in a broadcast interview last night and claimed that there had never been any complaints of sexual impropriety which considering the size of the organisation is very hard to believe. Auditors have been warning of financial problems for the past five years, advice which she repeatedly ignored. She came across as a narcissist.

There are allegations that a staff member was sexually harassed by another staff member and nothing was done. Also that younger female clients (14-16) were being pestered/groomed/coerced into sexual activity by older (20) male clients. That it was reported to staff but again nothing was done.
