Hi all you people i am moving to London. I need some travel advice. I want a pass to travel on underground & buses. I'll will not note NOT be using it daily. I'd say 2 days per week. I'm just wondering what is my best option? I.e is there pay as you go option?

You can't use cash on the bus or tube any more. You have to get an Oyster Card or just use your contactless debit/card. They only take your fare for the journey - it's not based on how long it's valid for.

Oyster Card.........it's a brilliant concept, so easy and bargain fares compared to paying cash at the ticket office/machine

I believe paying a fare by oyster card is a bit cheaper than using a debit card.

No expiry on the credit balance on an oyster card, dead simple to get. Pretty much every tube station can issue one and put credit on it for you.

Indeed. I have mine for just when I go home. Was delighted to find I still had £12 on it from months ago

The contactless card fare is the same on the tube as it is on Oyster.

You top your oyster card up try and stay out of zone 1 and 2 on the underground as there's a premium, also there's ticket machines near lot of bus stops that take credit card and cash

The cost of bus travel is one way and regardless of length of journey is the same price

Just to add a think you pay a fiver ( not sure exact cost as I have had mine quite a while) for your oyster card as a one off payment

Oyster card costs £10 which includes £5 returnable deposit when you are finished with it. Daily charges are capped at a maximum of £6:40 in zone1

Make sure you register it online, if you lose it you can get the money back.

You can use apple pay and contactless I wouldn't advise Apple pay, if your phone goes flat while you are travelling you will be charged the maximum.

Remember to tap in and out on trains (overground takes Oyster too) otherwise you get charged the maximum for the day even if it's just a single journey.

I never knew that, I've not caught up with contactless cards yet. I'll probably have to when I get so feeble I can't tap 4 buttons.....

I was there in January for a trip to the Stones and had the best French Martini in the Merchant Hotel.

Tapping in and out is on the card readers at stations without barriers. It's easy to walk through and forget to tap out then it's a hassle to get the refund.

Until it happened to me I didn't realise they allocate 90 minutes for my commute (normal tine 27 minutes). However, if they cancel a train, close the station because a tree is on the line, someone commits suicide etc and you're delayed: tough shit!

You can claim it back if your card is registered. I'm sure many don't notice £10 gone or know they can claim it back.

I didn't know that! It would explain how it went from £21 credit to £8 on one journey where the train was held in a tunnel for a very long time.

I didn't know that! It would explain how it went from £21 credit to £8 on one journey where the train was held in a tunnel for a very long time.

I take the London Bridge to Victoria train: need I say more about cancellations and delays.

I only knew because I couldn't get out of the station. Nice little earner there!

I'm originally from London. Oyster card is the only way to go. You can get them from most shops now, the initial outlay is a fiver. Then it's pay as you go. They have a great app too so you can keep check of your credit and it will also notify you if you've failed to tap out too.

If you Google Transport for London you'll find all the info you'll need.

But depending where you live/ work etc.

You don't need to avoid ,say zone 1 - you just need to avoid going in or out those statuons!

Eg - you're going from zone 3 north to zone 3 south- to meet your first fab date. Course you go through zones 1+2.

Also, be careful with the maxing out of what oyster charges you -cos it's not very reliable. Sometimes I just buy a days travel card cos then. I know they can't overcharge.

No-one ever got a penny back from LT for overcharging

Yes, it's one card for all travel around London, including some local commuter trains. You can't use cash on the bus any more so you need a card (either Oyster or a UK issued contactless credit/debit card) or buy a pre-paid ticket.

I did: three times I got the £10 back they overcharged me: got it back the next day. Also got my fair refunded by Southern for train delay/cancellation.

Mainline trains, DLR and buses. Not sure about the trams.
