Anyone else struggle? Since the crash I've not bothered with the gym and my diet has gone to he'll.

Really struggling getting motivated to actually sort things out.

Life seems to consist of sleeping nearly every hour of the day I'm not in work.

Tips or techniques for dragging yourself off your arse and doing stuff?

Are you all better now OP? Did you get the bike fixed/ a new one?

Can you go back to planning your trip? That might motivate you.

Way over Yonder, that's where I'm bound

You may be still in recovery mode.

Work on setting yourself a teensy task and build up from there. Don't let the depression genie rub it's lamp.

I found talking to a counsellor helped load.. put everything in order in my head. Felt like a weight was lifted...went and did some shopping. Good clean food. Looked up some recipes...started lifting again..snowballed from there.

Good luck fella

Pretty much my daily struggle ... Every day off or early Finish from work I think of all the things I'm going to do and then a voice in my head says "yeah right" and shut my eyes and I go to sleep until I have to get up for work when I'm happy I'm really happy life and soul of a gathering but when I'm down there really is no way up not that I can control anyhow ...

Take each day as it comes, maybe set a task to help motivate yourself

little house on the praire

Baby steps, instead of sleeping make yourself get up even if you don't do anything, don't beat yourself up, every step is a step in the fight direction

My default setting is lazy.

I do lists of 5 personal tasks and mark them off so I'm completing things.

My last 5 were..

Change bedlinen

Hang up ironing in wardrobe, not the doors

Make hairdressers appt

Buy a waterproof mac for work

Chocolate treat

I managed!

Small victories help.

Have you considered starting off by cleaning up your diet? You say yourself it's poor right now, why not try slowly adding a little fruit and veg, and see if it gives you a boost?

Edinburgh

If there's a rocket going spare...

I'm seriously lacking. I know I'll feel better if I pulled my finger out but I don't seem able to put myself into any sort of action. It's pathetic.

I need a highly motivated exercise junkie who lives in Edinburgh and needs a project!

on the road to nowhere in particular

Gyms are difficult places to go back to once the routine has been broken. It's purely psychological. Go once and plan the next trip and stick to it.

Easier said than done I know.

Get a very long rope. tie one end of the rope to your bed, and the other end, you tie to your neighbours car, who goes to work at 7.30 in the morning. And if you don't get up in time to, untie it from his car, you are going to look like Mary fuckin Poppins. The moral of this scenario is !!! Think positive, not negative, have happy funny thoughts.

Get yourself a gym buddy

Training with someone else will give you the motivation to get down to the gym.

Once you're over the doorstep everything will seem easier.

I know from personal experience, after a serious knee op, that it's much easier to get out of a habit than getting back into it

Putting the 'cum' in Eboracum

Sometimes we just need a break. 've just had a month off. Don't get me wrong - I haven't been face smashing a black forest gateau every night, but I have had a very fun filled July and thought it pointless to carry on my 5:2 when I couldn't get to the gym. Back at it with a vengeance tomorrow!

I agree with DirtyGirl though. You have nothing to worry about. I would, if I was your type.

Yeah I love nights though for work.

Normally it fits my sleeping pattern perfectly

Just not having a bike seems to have sapped me of the motivation, got all the videos to start insanity meant to start it last Monday but just can't work up the motivation

It's not always about being tidy I'm probably the messiest person I know but fuck me if I think I have to do something or bad will come of it I have to do it and that can be something as stupid as touching something a set number of times or even just completing a task before an advert or song finishes ... Sound stupid but It's surprising how many people deal with this sort of thing daily when you talk about it ..

A guy I've just worked for spent 14 years doing night shift, but was told he should stop because it was making his depression worse!

Not sure myself as I've never done a night shift in my life unless it involved a lock in

I've wanted to get into running for years. But I run on default lazy when it comes to exercise.

Annoying as I can clean the house faster than Kim and aggy on speed!

I tend to throw myself in and do loads of exercise for weeks or months and then nothing for 12 months.

Each year I get a little fatter so if you crack this one let me know. I'm beginig to think it's about making it fun but I'm not quite sure how to do that.

Firstly, never be hard on yourself. Punishment doesn't provide lasting motivation, merely insult.

From near inactivity, only plan and take small steps. They are massive compared to nothing.

Resist going ott, just keep it fairly easy. Better to plan a total of 30 minutes in a week and no more, than exercising every other day.

Developing a routine helps, as it gets things normalized and habituated over time.

Only do exercise that you like. Studies show adherence is more successful in the long term.

I've focused on exercise but these principles apply to introducing new stuff into your life.

And ensure you're taken care of emotionally. Not isolated etc. Meet with people who care for you.

And add more fun into your life. You're not designed to become stale. Get involved with stuff that's light, invigorating and where you can laugh more often.

As with steering a ship, changing course by just one degree makes a radical difference to both your route and end point.

Be easy, small steps and let us know how you get on.

Take up an exercise that you can enjoy on several levels. Learn a skill...dancing is good, martial arts, mountain biking...something where you can get out and interact...being in a group can be a great motivator. I must admit traditional cardio bores the piss out of me
