I hate my periods. I'm embarrassed to admit that, despite my age, I have never llearned to cope with them and never found a method of protection that works for me. I've seriously considered asking for a hysterectomy.

Does anyone want to pass on any tips or advice?

My first one, I had just outside my period and they warned me I'd probably have irregular bleeding, which I did, as soon as I had my second shot, they completely stopped. Have you tried the implant in the arm?

right now i'm very bad and take the pill, against medical advice as i'm too old, and have no pill free week. This is amazing but I can't really do it for the next 10 years. Sigh.

When you say you have never learned to cope with them or found protection that works, what do you mean?

Are you locking yourself away and not participating in life during your period?

What protection do you use? I couldn't cope with tampons and sanitary towels took trial and error to find the right ones for each stage of my period.

Are you particularly heavy or is it that there isn't an established pattern.

Is it a mental b!ock or something more physical?

The only thing thats ever qorked for me is the implant. Stopped my periods completely.

Put on a lot of weight though!

At the age of 44 I had a hysterectomy and it was the best thing I ever did. I had incredibly heavy and prolonged periods but I also had pain for 3 weeks out of four. I'd tried everything.... The coil, an ablation, the pill.

I'm not saying you should have one but it was right for me. I got my life back.

Well.... Yeah the big thing for me is that I've not found a sanitary towel that doesn't leak, certainly not reliablely so. Maybe 30% of the time they work.

Often have to use 3 at once and they tend to slide down my trouser legs as they simply refuse to stick to anything but themselves.

When i was having periods i would be confinied always wearing black trousers in case i started as it can be anything from 2 weeks to 12. i ruined a brand new matress and i've left stains on chairs and sofas which is excruciatingly embarrassing.

then there's the pain which can be anything from absent to pass out crippling.

My daughter 17 has Polycystic ovary syndrome she has had problems since she started her monthly's and she goes through hell every month at the moment she is keeping a diary for gyny team as she is due her scans but she dont just bleed but heavy clots I do feel for you and she turns into the bitch from hell x

Something's not right. Have you seem a gynaecologist? You really should be checked out. That's not normal bleeding.

The heavy bleeding and how long not right need to go doctors and have it checked out also worth checking for anemia. When was the last time you had a smear and have you been checked for Polycystic ovary syndrome x

I'm in the same boat.

I took the combined pill for 15 years and the last 10 of that was without a break. I hate periods that much this suited me. I actually had Implanon for about a year and it didn't agree with me so went back on the pill.

When I turned 30 they changed me to the mini pill and I have infrequent periods now. Drives me mad - I get every symptom going.

Have you tried using a menstrual cup? I use one and find they work excellently. Better for your body and the environment.

anemia yes, PCOS no. Never occured to me as i don't have skin issues but i spose that could be a possiblity. I have assumed the irregularity was due to other medication i take. I don't feel that they are particularly heavy- 3 towels at once is more about area coverage than capacity, also if i use 3 one might stay put. Lol

oh how i wish i could, even the thought of the gymnastics i'd have to do to get on of them in the right place makes my back scream. How eaay are they to get in?

Im 26 and dont have a regular period. When I do get one its heavy but I cant recall last time had one! I was getting tested for PSO but as I work away I think got mixed results and never found out. Have a smear letter and need to go as never had my smear at 16 so im now a paranoid wreck! I dont think ill be able to have kids when I settle down and have said for a while but think thats more thinking of lack of periods and possible PSO

Once I had the implant my periods stopped completely with the exception of a rare occurance but very light.

Mine used to be very heavy and painful so it is a gift from heaven lol. They do affect people in different ways though

I am the same age as you & I take my (low oestrogen) pill every day on the Drs advice. I was diagnosed with endometriosis 20 yrs ago and suffer with severe pain & heavy bleeding (causes sickness &/or blackouts).

I was advised to have the mirena coil after my last operation but refused as I like to be in control of my body.

I've tried every painkiller & anti-inflammatory & found low dose anti-depressants & diclofenac have really helped. I was offered a hysterectomy at 30 but was pregnant & then the goalposts kept bring moved.

You really need to speak to your GP & a hysterectomy should be a last resort

You need to ask your GP to be referred to a specialist. Taking the pill against medical advice is clearly not helping much. There are alternatives but it won't be a GP that recommends them.

I went through that too. I used night pads and tight knickers and that worked for me during the day, changing every couple of hours. I used to sleep in a slightly upright position, which was more hit and miss. Mattress protectors were less costly than a new mattress.

Do you have fibroids?

I have PCOS, i used to bleed all month and be fine about 4 days! I have been given the marina coil, best thing ive had! Some people dont get on with them but i dont bleed at all now!! (Once in blue moon maybe)

The only advice I can give is to pester your docs until something is done to help you.

My poor mother suffered the same as you and never did anything about it. She has come out of the menopause now, but so many years of embarrassment for her and being uncomfortable ruined what could have been a much happier time for her if she had done something about it.

Don't be fobbed off by the docs, keep at them and fingers crossed you can put an end to it. Good luck hun xx

Its not for everyone but the Mirena has lightened my heavy periods, I'm like clockwork and have no pain either. Ten years now and hope I can keep having them for at least the next ten.

As I've said on other posts the hysterectomy was the best thing that happened to me as I had fibroids. There are other options these day including the coil (which my body rejected) and Novasure ablations. I initially put regular but very heavy periods down to my age and change to the mini pill. Go back to the GP as just your size shouldn't cause such an issue with pads. It sounds more like flooding to me. Certainly don't put up with it. Good luck and let us know how you get on.

Marina coil. I've not had a proper period since 2012. No weight gain. No side effects and no big issues. I have very high blood pressure so all pills out for me. It's been a god send

I gave up on the mini pill after bleeding constantly for three weeks! Was drained and exhausted from bleeding and almost constant period pain!

Back to condoms only!

Period started today. Vile period pain plus heavy bleeding - but at least it'll be over in a few days!

Easy to put in.

You fold it and it's about the same width and length as a non-applicator tampax and if you can use those a cup will be no bother.

You put it in place by sort of holding the sides instead of poking it in. I really recommend having a go.

I'm in the same journey, same problem, I now use tena pants, and if out for the day take a couple of spares.

I'm trying out a monthly hormone implant, after two months bleeding stopped, but the implant can only be taken for six months, and after last one bleeding restarted, so I had a second set of six monthly implants, just waiting to see what happens

Surgeon wants to do hysterectomy, but four years of heavy loss, (like you, it was almost haemorrhage for a few days) but because of my age and anemia he's not keen on major surgery.

And also keep an eye open for anemia, mine kicked in at Christmas, and I've had two transfusions so far this year.

My consultant gave me some heavy duty drugs to help "dry" my bleeding three months before the hysterectomy. The plan was that would help to increase my blood count to a normal level (I was at 7.4) and my blood pressure was really low. Three days before the operation I had a full blood transfusion over 17 hours. I've never felt so alive and energetic.

There are ways to handle almost everything, you just need to keep asking questions when you speak to the consultant.

I told them my preferred date for the operation to fit around work, the preferred type of hysterectomy (full and vaginal as the recovery time was better) and that I would do what was necessary (take the heavy duty drugs for a limited time) in order to make it work for them. I got exactly what I asked for and fantastic follow up. It's a partnership not them doing something to you - it's your body.

im sterilized, my choice, but i am in tune with my natural cycle, every full moon, but used to have horrendous time, then i found it was linked to my feelings about being a woman..when i worked on this they evened out...dont want to put artificial chemicals into my body..i work with what i have...imo its partly about loving who you are..and the more you do, the more your body attunes with those vibes...

i would like to thank everyone for their advice. I know what i should do but i just feel so much healthier when i'm on the pill so I've been putting it off.

i will do some research on alternatives to traditional towels especially pants, if i can find ones in my size. I'll also buy a better mattress protector.
