Any Mechanics on here?

Wanted to know if a Faulty EGR valve would cause a car engine to misfire and cut out whilst driving? I have recently changed the camshaft/MAP sensors (original GM parts) but still having the same issue just worried about changing the EGR and still having the same issue.

Any engine lights on? If yes get the codes read.

An EGR valve that is jammed open can cause a misfire, the car will smoke like a pig and run like a bag of spanners. It's also worth checking the wiring to the injectors, particularly injector 3, it's a common fault.

Also don't just change it, try cleaning it first. It's a simple as removing it, soaking it in carb cleaner spray (£5 from Halfrauds) and refitting it. This usually works and saves you a ton of money. Failing that find a garage/tuner that will delete the EGR from the ECU map and blank it off. Costs similar to replacing it but you'll never have issues with it again and your car will run far better without it.

EGR valves are a stupid and massively flawed concept that cause more problems than they solve.

Have you done the peddle trick test to read the fault code ?

Sit in driver seat keys out of ign

Push & hold throttle & break peddles to floor

Keys in turn ign on but do not start car

Dash warning light with spanner in a triangle after a few seconds start to flash in groupes of four

Ten flashes is zero will give you four figure code eg 0304

Google vauxhall fault codes and read off the fault

Just saved £80 having it read at the garage

0304 is misfire plug 4 btw

Good luck

£80 is dealer prices for a diag, most garages charge nowhere near that. You can buy a scanner yourself for as little as £20 or download a free app (Torque) to your phone for free and buy a Bluetooth dongle for about £5 that will read and clear fault codes.

Hi

Yes done the pedal trick. And it came out with 6 codes. Camshaft sensor, Map sensor, Egr, Airflow, Coilpack, and two minor ones. Since this I've changed the two sensors, but I do believe that it's one thing causing a knock on effect. I'm keeping the car for a few years hence didn't mind buying the sensors which maybe didn't really need replacing (plus still got the parts if I ever did need them again) but I'm thinking if it's the Egr valve thus could cause a multiple chamber misfire to come up? Also I need to delete some of the codes because they don't automatically delete themselves.

Cheers just going to download "Torque" as I do have a ELM327 WIFI OBD2 connector somewhere and with the software should delete some of the codes

An EGR that is stuck in the open position will cause a multiple cylinder misfire because it'sallowing exhaust gases into the cylinders which will affect combustion, it'll generally be worse when the engine is cold or not under load. It'll also clog your inlet manifold much quicker and you run the risk of damaging your swirl flaps, if one drops off and into a cylinder it's engine rebuild time.

Remove the EGR inspect the state of it (most likely covered in heavy soot deposits) clean it with carb cleaner and see if it improves. Also clean the area around the inlet manifold where the EGR fits and also give the MAP sensor another clean, if the EGR is jammed open it'll no doubt be covered in crap again.

Check that it's a compatible interface, many OBDII dongles can be troublesome if they're above version 1.5.

Also, did you change the coilpack?

A faulty one of those will definitely cause a misfire.

Not changed the coilpack as of yet but trying to get to the fault by way of process of elimination. I heard that aftermarket/copy parts don't last very long so it is getting expensive buying from main dealers next step is the Egr tho.

If you have a faulty coil pack it'll definitely be the cause of a misfire.

harlow

Had egr on my corsa. I just capped it off and the problem went. Most people just cap it off to save £££.

Like others have said clean it before replacing it but don't be surprised if you have to replace it later down the line.

I had same car same engine, bought a new egr for £70 and problem went, after different mechanics told me it wasn't egr valve even though egr fault code was up they kept telling me it was cool pack and Al sorts of different sensors

In fairness an EGR fault code can often actually be a faulty with the lambda (oxygen) sensor.
