Interesting the media coverage from one even or another as well as the emotion and reaction of people all the world.

When a Lion is injustly killed by a dentist... in few minutes all the world showed its indignation. Which is totally normal nonetheless...

When a 18 months years old has been burnt alive by a Terrorist in Palestine, the public indignation/emotion/reaction and media coverage aren't the same...

There is no "Je suis Ali" like everybody did for Charlie hebdo's terrorist attack.

Wonder why is that ?

I agree totally with you.

I said on another thread that the killing of humans is overlooked, whilst the killing of animals is sentimentalised and people show outrage ( real or not )

There could be many reasons. One of the reasons could be that it's the type of person killed that is not cared about. Or it could be that it's easier to lynch a single dentist than it is to get into a real fight where you might get injured. Who knows.

I do nothing about war either apart from not hating.

Come to think of it if we all 'not hated' then there could be improvement.

I agree with you OP and this is going to sound clinical and I'm not excusing it in any way, but it's the only explanation I can derive.

The Lion is an endangered species. Not many left. So such a pointless destruction of this life is newsworthy.

People are not an endangered species. So such a pointless destruction of Ali's life is not *so* newsworthy. Although still more newsworthy than most deaths or else how would you know about it?

We don't read about every deer that gets shot do we? Not endangered, not newsworthy.

What about the hundreds of people shot and killed every day in the world? Look at gun crime in the U.S. alone. Do you read about all of them in the news or can you name all the victims?

Whether we like it or not, some things are more unique or newsworthy than others. If we had every pointless, needless and tragic death on the news every day, there wouldn't be enough hours in the day to broadcast them all.

Sadly, that's just the way it is.

While I agree I think most people's reactions are 'business as usual in the middle east'.

Horrific stories of what extremists are doing to innocents in that part of the world are nothing new (but still abhorrent) and people are probably a little desensitized to it and know there's absolutely nothing we can say or do that will change the situation.

An apparently educated and civil man slaughtering a lion for no reason other than fun can be tackled through public outrage.

Just my thoughts....

From what I read yesterday. Lions are NOT on the endangered species list.

Had they have been then the dentist wouldn't have shot it.

Apparently they MAY be on the endangered list from October

There is a lot of sentiment where animals are concerned and people are outraged. Perhaps it's down to the fact that we have become blasé about the atrocities of war and the stories are so commonplace that it doesn't have the impact it should.

I have worked in child protection for many years and throughout that time have dealt with terrible things. I am not sentimental about it.

I could not work for the RSPCA.

I saw a comment in the metro similar to this comparing the outcry to Cecil's death to the death in Calais of a migrant.

There's only 7 billion people on this planet and its increasing every day. 1 human life lost is like a grain of rice dying in a rice field. It's sad especially when there are situations that are preventable but doesn't leave mankinds numbers in the thousands or worse hundreds.

There has been 10 animals in just the last 5 years to be declared extinct. The western black rhino was hunted into extinction in 2011 so Cecil deserves to be a big story especially when he was killed in such an underhand and cruel way for sport.

I didn't know about the baby being killed,no one put it on Facebook for me to see. I saw a cartoon but until now didn't know it's relevance. I find that sad. My news feed has a lot of reference to animals being killed,some of them are by advertisement and not my FB friends. If I read the articles I would probably know what the dentist had for dinner today. I read a comment about Cameron stating the UK will be at the forefront against big game hunting. I'm still perplexed as to why.

Actually they aren't. Livestock are a checked by a vet before slaughter. Any found to be mistreated aren't slaughtered and the circumstances are investigated.

Fact its a brown palestinian child killed by illegal jewish settlers.Like the hundreds of thousands of innocent children women and men killed in iraq in an illegal war which also werent newsworthy. If it was a white british baby killed by isis it would be news worthy. The difference is the colour of their skin and a media and government obsession with demonising brown muslims as less than human.

There's truth in that I suppose. I do enjoy hunting. I only shoot something I'm going to eat though and never fire unless I'm certain of a clean kill. I much prefer game meat than farmed meat, it tastes better and the animal has a fair chance of escape without injury.

Prefer to appreciate an animal in its natural habitat doing what it was born to do....be alive instead as a trophy on someones wall. Hunting for game at least means that animal died as part of natures cycle to be consumed. What is the point of sport hunting other than a cheap thrill?

I'm connected to shooters through family and friends!

The honesty of shooting things reminds me of racist jokes, said quietly amongst friends only!

I've shot many many times, there is something about guns that you just can't put your finger on! And that comes from me, someone who has no interest in guns!.... They are weirdly a thing of beauty and power.

That's how I know it's a waste of time trying to remove them from the us population, no amount of gun massacres will convince the captivated to give them up.

So that leaves management of them.

I do get the shooting buzz,but I just don't think I could shoot any living animal looking at me eye to eye(Hey,that's just me and I realise We don't all think a like) I'm not one to judge,I just don't get it

My _iew is different - we're so used to hearing about vile terrorist atrocities that we've become desensitised to them. Murdering a lion however is unusual, therefore gets greater attention.

There is also of course, a long and romantic history in this country of having romanticised the lion as a symbol of strength, courage and heroism, in a way we see it in our own symbolic, religious fashion, hence why Cecils murder has been seen not only as a pointless ego killing, but a violation of our own spiritual ideals.

its not actual taking of the animals life, its the manner of how it was done..

on the OP's point, there has been needless deaths of children somewhere in the hundreds during the life of this thread due to shitty water, preventable diseases etc etc..

it will continue when this hits 175..

and it will continue tomorrow and the day after that and by and large the majority will give it not a moments thought..

should we? Probably yes as all life is sacred but can we in reality care for and prevent the loss of life given the issue's and the situations which for some is their reality then probably not..

A quick, clean kill with no suffering is considered humane.

I don't consider sport hunting humane because it's purely about killing for a trophy or bragging rights (as I've said numerous times over numerous threads) and the animals are rarely killed in a humane fashion or don't have a fair chance of escape.

Different people consider different animals as vermin. Mice, rats etc are what most people consider as vermin and who wants to live in a house infested with those?

Farmers will include other animals such as rabbits, hares, foxes, pigeons and various other birds and squirrels.

My feelings towards those are if I'm not going to eat it, I won't kill it.

Different people consider different animals as vermin. Mice, rats etc are what most people consider as vermin and who wants to live in a house infested with those?

Farmers will include other animals such as rabbits, hares, foxes, pigeons and various other birds and squirrels.

I will quite openly admit that I only give to animal charities, well more specifically dog charities. I won't feel bamboozled into giving to children or think of myself as a terrible person because I won't give to fellow mankind. In reality my working life has revolved around changing the lives of children for the better, ironically much more than those who are aghast at the sympathy shown to an animal rather than a child.

I think we have perhaps become a little desensitized to the horrors of war. We all have been shocked to the core over the beheading, attacks in France, killings on our streets, terror in Tunisia etc. It has made us feel fear. When a story like Cecil's comes out, we do latch onto it and feel outrage because it's very different from other media news which really frightens us.

It's not a measure of what type of people we are in relation to what we feel empathy with.

I so agree with you and in my line of work I safeguard adults and children and you just become harden in that sense...
