carrbrook stalybridge

this has come up on another forum and caused quiet a debate

you are driving a hgv on a motorway in stop start traffic . a car comes along side in which the lone occupant is clearly drinking from a can of alcohol and there are what appears to be several empty cans in the passenger footwell .

do you

A phone the police giving as many details as you can

B do nothing as its nothing to do with you

Chams or Socials

Call police - better safe than sorry. What if they went on to cause an accident later on & you could have possibly prevented it? My aunt was killed by a d*unk driver leaving a 5 yr old son

Hereabouts

If it's safe to do so, call the police.

Multiple times I've reported the same car at the same time of night on the same road for swerving across two lanes. If they were to harm anyone due to something that I had seen and not reported, I'd never forgive myself.

A for me.

The driver is a potential danger to him/herself and others. The police can decide what they do next but I feel it is my duty to report a potential life threatening situation in much the same way as if I saw what I thought was a gunman or suspect package left somewhere.

The guy could be totally innocent and no threat, but it's not my call to make - let the professionals make that call.

I don't drive a HGV. Is my phone handsfree and is it safe for me to make a call?

B do nothing as its nothing to do with you . It might depend if you could legally use your phone . In any event just because there are empty cans of beer on the floor does not necessary mean that the driver has been drinking from them recently . I would try to monitor his driving and would only report if it was obvious to me that he was not in control of his vehicle ..

I'm an hgv driver and I would call the police without question I don't want him driving under my wheels and killing himself

Crash into them, call the police and insist they're breathalized as you could swear you'd seen them drinking while in traffic...

They did say it was in stop-start traffic, so I would.

A. The person in question is clearly a moron, perhaps even suicidal, with no care who he takes with him

"I don't drive - I can drink what I like.

And I am sure the rest of us are much safer as a result of that choice. Now we just need the other incompetents to follow your lead and to either not start or to give up driving

"B. A is far too much hassle."

I was curious as to what there was to debate but I'm guessing it started in just the same way.

I wonder if it would still be too much hassle if they went on to crash into you or run over a loved one that belonged to you. Would you feel like someone should have gone that extra mile to do the right thing?

First of all, as the traffic is stopped I will try to talk to him, then if he doesn't listen, I will warn him that I'll call the police if he doesn't pull over and call one of his friend or family to pick him up, as well as his car...

And if he doesnt answer A

Phone the police, let them deal with him.

How would you feel if you found out that driver had killed someone, but you could have stopped it.

Or how would you feel if the guy/girl had just learned some terrible news, - speak to them or ring the pigs?????

It's a 'no brainer' for me!!

There's no excuse for drinking and driving.

And really... pigs?

Of course there isn't, we should all act like robots when tragedy assumes ....

PS: as for the pigs; thankfully I escaped Maggie's farm!!
