Love a bargain too

Today got a lovely floral China tea set.

4 cups and saucers

Milk jug

Sugar bowel

Serving plate

Now just need cake for the plate or some finger sandwiches

Are you a charity shopper.

For Mother's Day this year I found my mum an 1898 beautifully bound and illustrated copy of HM Stanley's 'The Dark Continent' for a tenner and then ('cos I thought I'd do Father's Day at the same time & get it out the way) for my dad I found this weird 1930's Bakelite resistance machine. It's like a really heavy proto-Tazer.

All yours for £30.

Not really a fan to be honest but it does depend on the location & what the charity is.

I prefer looking for bargains at vintage fairs.

The teenager has become an addict. He gets all of his clothes (bar school uniform) and some of his shoes, records, CDs, DVDs and books. He has found some amazing things.

I'm a giver rather than a shopper but like to mooch around the ones in really upmarket areas just in case there is something unusual.

Anita loves the charity chops, I rarely look in them myself.

Having said that though I once bought a "Brand New" official South Africa Rugby Shirt. All the Tags still on for £2.50. I think that others had overlooked it because as part of the branding its got a label which says "XXXL" it was actually a large. It's still going strong too.

volunteered a couple times myself, like the unusual stuff and books. Feel they are getting more expensive trying to not miss out. Too many people buying the bargains to sell on ebay

(Buy a lot of christmas presents from them - Get the same response without the huge pricetag...spend the savings on something fun)

Met my ex in a charity shop, turned out to not be a bargain.

The Aged shop has a curious offer, Hardback books £1.99 or 4 for a £1.

It's obviously cheaper to by 4 and immediately donate 3 back to them.

Anyone ever notice how frigging hot most of them are? Pop into one for 5 mins and you get all toasty.

Many of the charities now have staff who know a bit about what anything interesting might be worth, run it through the net and divert it to auction or ebay before the punters get a sniff.

As the purpose of the shops is to raise funds for the charity this makes business sense.

It's worth looking for Swishing events for decent clothes too. The ones linked to the local waste authority will be bring one take one, usually, and no costs. It will be a wider range than just swapping with your friends.

I follow that 100% but I suspect the lack of opportunity to bag a bargain puts some people off visiting charity shops.

The odds are loaded in charity shops' favour already.

I think charities are wise to it now but there used to be loads of con artists desperated to be managers of charity shops so they could nick the valuable donations.

If I have time, I'll have a rake around as I like recycling and I'd rather clothes stay in the UK than be sent to the third world (destroys local employment).
