No surprise that a survey on loneliness has concluded that one in five elderly people in the UK who feel lonely have no one to turn out. Apparently , earlier research has shown that loneliness and isolation are as risky to older people as smoking 15 cigarettes a day. It's going to become an increasing problem.

I remember telling a friend, that I had never felt lonelier than when I was still living with my ex, but our marriage was going down the pan. I had someone there, but felt quite alone. She couldn't grasp that concept.

Now if I'm ever lonely, I will ring a friend, grab one of them for a coffee, go out for a walk or a cycle, mess around on here which will always make me smile. Borrow my sister's dog - who is slightly mad.

My housemates are away at the moment, and whilst I am enjoying the peace and solitude, it also unfortunately conflicted with annual leave that I've had to take or I'd lose it.

Last night, I started to notice the beginnings of a mood dip, today I've woke up and it has taken me an hour to actually get out of bed.

So I've just finished breakfast, I'm going to get changed and go to the gym, then I'm going to shower and go for a walk along the sea front, seeing all the families and annoying children, should remind me why I'm happy to be single!

I much prefer my own company, to the point of thinking I was somehow suffering some sort of mental health problem but no, I'm just a miserable fucker!

My friends and family understand exactly and don't intrude, they wait for me and I'm so very thankful that they do.

I'm happier living on ma own and have done for the last 2 yrs. I only live 5 mins walk from the city centre, so company is only a short distance away should I crave it

If I am.feeling a tad lonely and glum, which happens even for a chipper chap like me.

The pooch and I walk to our favourite place , sit relax take time to think and share the view.

Its hard not to smile then , especially with my best chum.

I'm a bit of a loner anyway - a friend of mine once described me as a sociable hermit!

I have plenty of family including lots of kids and I also have a small group of extremely good friends so I always have people I can link up with either just for a chat or to get out and do stuff.

I'm also a member of a local choir and a local crafting group so I have other circles of people too.

And like Taff I also have a pet who is pleased to see me and snuggles up and wants attention, though mine is a puss not a pooch.

Yup... that's exactly what I'm like too. I can be sociable but I like my own company. And I love my cat... she adds a whole lot of good to my life too.

I come on here, I text people, I call people, or I read. I never feel lonely when I have my nose in a book. Although I'm on my own I don't really feel alone. I was more alone when I was living with people... Now I have my own company, my own space, and if I ever need an escape from reality I have a reasonably sized book collection

I very rarely get lonely, I love my own space. I see my friends once or twice a week and family the same.

I love my solo holidays .

I do feel for the elderly as they are used to a husband being around and when they go they have no one.

I find it incredibly sad when elderly relatives don't give a shit about them.

I use exercise to get together with people and to get me connected with my body - it also gives me a lift.

I'll try to work out if there's a cause - maybe too much stress or going too fast. I've got great friends that long chats on the phone are uplifting and connecting.

Otherwise I usually chat with anyone and my friends in other parts of the world chat at any time of the night.

Otherwise a good holiday does me good.

Huge difference between being alone and being lonely.

I'm often alone and that's the way I like it.

I am never lonely though I do accept that as the years pass I may not be able to say that.

I'm surprised that NO ONE so far has thought about other people.

One of the BEST ways to keep your mood up is to think of others and help them out.

There are more and more people living alone but unfortunately on a lonely day they think me , me , me , me , me ....if they thought I'll go and do sommat for smelly Bob.. they'd have less time to think they need others to come to them.

Friends are found in the strangest places.

During the day I'm rarely alone and want to be. Night time is the time I feel lonely sometimes. It keeps me awake as I feel scared and vulnerable.

My sentiments too, I'm a single parent to a child with special needs so I love my alone time, my friends/family are always at the end of the phone if I want to chat or go out.
