my god how hard is it to find a new job i was laid of in october i have handed out 8 c.vs now and had 2 back saying we have got nothing but the thing is i seen they had jobs. so i might aswell say fuck it and become a porn star what do you think lol

I've been looking for a new job since July 2008, fortunately I am in employment and I also have my own graphic design business, it is tough out there, just keep at it, word of mouth is usually best though so mention to friends and family and even old contacts from your previous employment to keep an eye open for you, best of luck

As a recruitment consultant, I have a couple of constructive critisisms. The first is you've been laid off since October and sent out 8 CV's? That's not looking for work, that's pretending to. You need to be sending out at LEAST 10 per day at the moment.

Secondly, has your CV and cover letter been spelling and grammer checked? I know we don't criticise spelling and grammar on here but if you're sending out cover letters and CV's in the same way as your post above, that's going to be a big factor.

I am receiving over 200 appliacations to every job I advertise at the moment. I start my sifiting by discarding anyone who's CV or cover letter has spelling or grammar errors. If you can't check it or have someone else check it for you on such an important document - i'm not wasting my time inter_iewing you.

Then I remove anyone with no relevant experience. Are you applying for jobs where you fit the criteria they're looking for?

That usually brings me down to 50 or so, when i'll pick the most suitable 5/10 and book them in. Half of those won't turn up, 2 or 3 will be idiots face to face and one or two might actually be suitable.

But really - sending out 8 CV's since October is where you're going wrong. You DO realise don't you that we're in the middle of one of the wrost recessions and that the numbers of unemployed is higher than it has been in a long time and rising?

That's what you're up against - you need to up your game!

my wife has checked the c.vs everything she is in admin so yes everything has been done right but thanks for the advise its abit harder for me aswell iam disabled but iam under the shaw trust which are a big help so i will see what happens xxxxxxxxxxx

well my job is in aquatics working with saltwater marine fish and trops and coldwater fish i have done this for along time now infact started keeping them when i was 7 years old and have kept it up till now i have had my own shop and then went to work for other people. like i said its hard for me to get a job straight away as i suffer from epilepsy and very bad spinal probs but i still get out there and work. and tall boy the shaw trust help you get back into work if you have a disability they are very good and have always been there for me

Very clever. You can't see that most of those were typo's from typing quickly? Since I was in my lunch, in an office, alone and trying to help someone on here. As someone has said to me in PM, a busmans holiday. I'm not applying for a job

You attack me for doing nothing but advise someone who is clearly struggling with no idea why, but what useful advice have you given? None, nada.

This was in Bristol. I'm fairly sure it wasn't the above lady, but my imagination keeps running away with me...

Don't put too much faith in Shaw or A4e or any of the 'paid by results' chancers out there.

From what I read above, getting an inter_iew - never mind a job, is getting harder or harder out there and anything, ANYTHING, you can do to lessen your chances of being binned at first sort has to be worth the modest additional effort of spell and grammar checking anything you submit to a potential employer.

If the numbers quoted about are correct (and I've no reason to doubt them) it isn't economically viable to print, photocopy (try not to), stick in an envelope and mail the number of applications it'd be neccessary to submit in order to get a job.

Email is the answer.

I have been unemployed since the end of September. I have applied for 68 advertised jobs, am registered with 24 recruitment agencies, and have applied for either by email, or written letter to another 50 companies.

I know what lets me down, its my inter_iew technique, I get too nervous, and the fact that a lot of people don't take my previous employer seriously. Which renders my experience a little mute. People assume because it was a pet shop, that all we did was cuddle bunnies all day. Nothing to do with the fact that we as a single store had a £3.3mill annual turnover, and I have serious qualifications in Health and Safety and H.R.

I have epilepsy, but have never used that as an excuse yet. Not that I'm saying the OP is. Epilepsy has various degrees of activeness. I'm just lucky mine is well controlled so I can live a normal life.

While I've been unemployed, have I been sat on my butt doing nothing? No. I work voluntary twice a week reading to small children in the local library. I've also applied for Open University to retrain.

hi funkyfox i was not coming across to say it was my fits that stop me working i suffer from grand mall fits so as you can see i get them bad and i have got very bad spinal probs but i have never used that to say i can not work. i know that you was not trying to have ago or anything i was just saying iam not a lazy fucker i want to get back out there and work if you know what i mean take care x x

I think there isnt much point applying for positions that your not qualified for is there.

Its great if there are 40 jobs that your qualified for and can do the job. What happens if there arent the jobs around that you have qualifications for. Are you supposed to apply for jobs anyway?

Well done to the lady for contributing to the world with voluntary work. If more of the unemployed would do that it would make a difference.

I do feel for anyone applying for jobs. It isnt easy and there isnt loads of jobs for everyone to apply for especially if you are in an individual field.

My career has always been a nanny but there just arent the jobs nowadays as people cant afford to pay one,and those families have loads of nannies to choose from. I remember years ago I could finish one job and be offered 3 and have the pick of the bunch. It is different now as less jobs all round.

Because I claim jobseekers, I have to apply for every job they put me forward for.

The conversation last week went something like this.

Them - "Oh this is an assistant managers job"

Me - "But they want fashion experience, which I don't have"

Them - "But they will offer training"

Me - "Only if you have experience of working in a fashion environment. Which I don't have."

Them - "Well apply for it anyway."

Another one

Them - "Do you have transport?"

Me - "No, I can't drive, but I have a push bike, so can cycle reasonable distances"

Them - "Well this place is looking for bar staff."

Me - "Its 25 miles away from where I live."

Them - "Do you not want to work?"

Me - "Yes, I do, but after cycling 25 miles there, doing an 8 hour shift and cycling 25 miles home at god knows what hour at the night, I probably won't be capable for long."

So yes, the job centre seem to think there is a point to going for jobs you are either not qualified to do nor able to do!!!!

I have read most of this thread and I have thought about what some of you have writen. I lost my Job last November as a nurse through ill health. I haven't done a thing but nurse since I left school. That avenue is no longer available to me. But I have decided that I need to do something so I went back to school. I now am doing a OU degree in Child and Youth. I still need a job while doing this.

For me finding a job that I can do is unlikely as I am now disabled. No one will want to employ me as my condition changes from day to day, but I still go out there and try. I will go so far as saying I would stuff envelopes to earn a wage to feed my Children. The one thing I was told was that when you are sending your CV never fold it always put it into a A4 envelope as they may not be bothered to open it. (makes life easier for them).

Send of more CV's and if you have problems paying for the postage the Job Center can help you out with it. But out of you 8 CV's that you have sent with the two replyes you work the math how many weren't even looked at

Contact your local Shaw Trust office, they are not a goverment contracted agency like A4E/Pathfinders....they are a registered charity who specialise in getting job inter_iews for people with disabilities of all types and degrees of disablity.
