There was a piece on PM (R4) today.

Your car can be hacked through the DAB radio system. A hacker can infiltrate the on-board computer by creating a DAB station and installing malware that could give them control of your car brakes and other systems.

I saw an online piece about a fake town being created to test driverless cars.

Yes. I love older cars and I don't just mean classic expensive types - just a normal motor that starts, has wind up windows and locks that you open yourself. Just back from France and they make a point of keeping their cars going for years loads of old renaults Citroen etc that wouldn't be seen over here

I'm the same, prefer to get the value of a decent older car than the modern tin-foil wrapped ones, tho the aircon, auto and electric glass etc is nice to have My DAB is aftermarket and there's no way they could link into the any control or other functions from there so thinks I'm safe enough for now

It's an app that brings up dials on your phone that displays real time sensor read outs. Such as rpm, engine temperature, boost pressure, exhaust gas temperature, ect. I have it but there is no chance anybody could operate anything related to my car from the outside.

I'll check with the electronics geeks in the morning but this smells of utter bullshit tbh (even if it is on R4)....my mate is an auto locksmith and re program's ECUs... Needs a lot of kit... Through Dab? You gotta be kidding...can't even do much through ODB2...shame on you R4

To reprogram the ecu you need a laptop and the right software. Obd2 is more of an output than an input as it reads sensor information. It can read fault codes off the ecu but as far as reprogramming it, ha.

Ide give someone access to my ecu if they could reprogram it. It would save me a few hundred

problem is modern cars are all CANBUS including OEM radios, so I guess its possible to send rogue commands along to other components. Not so sure that fly-by-wire throttles go via that tho more things like lights, wipers etc.

It wasn't so much about stealing cars but using them for terror. The hackers could control the braking system, causing accidents. No need for bombs when you are sitting in a WMD.

I've got an aftermarket alpine head unit and it's got to be connected to with a phone and has an access code.

Pretty sure it wouldn't stop a determine hacker, but seriously haven't people got better things to be doing

you can tweak some parameters via the OBD interface tho but given range and time to do it probably less risk than a broadcast radio receiver like DAB

nah it may have directed them but down to the brain cell behind the wheel to not notice all the warning signs etc. Tom Tom's as I recall tho they all have potential for route errors. Same reason's been stated for going the wrong way down one way streets, the satnav was blamed by the person "in control of the vehicle"

No that's what u call a motor, I've a few old cars even a mk1 Granada n a 1954 Austin A30 not restored yet, and my recovery truck is a 03 plate nothing modern on that either. No central locking wind up windows think I'm safe lol

I am another old skool motorist. I trust my old diesal Rover with my life.

I commute to Scotland regularly and first time I hired a car. My mechanic said last time no point, he'd trust mine over these newer cars anyday. So a good service and we go. Also can't complain when a return trip costs £70 in diesal

I prefer to listen to the engine noise on my car . And I only have a radio in my van for traffic

Incidentally , you can operate door locks , wipers and control top speed through a computer that I have witnessed myself when a vauxhall technician came to look at it .

I read the article about "Hacking Cars" a while back. As with most of these things, it's not actually as simple as the story suggests.

Firstly, the DAB radio must actually be an "Internet Connected" radio, which is also connected into the car's main systems. This means that the only vulnerable systems will be in cars with combined Information\Entertainment systems.

Secondly, the potentially naughty people would need access to some serious technical knowledge about the cars being targeted and some rather expensive equipment.

And, obviously the attack would really need to be carried out whilst traveling in close(ish) proximity to the targeted cars, for a prolonged period of time.

Personally I think , unless you're a top international dignitary, an A lister or your daddy's a billionaire, the likelihood of being targeted is virtually none existent.

Oh yes, and finally. This report had been produced by a large tech company who had specialist knowledge of the systems installed. There hasn't been any cases of "criminals" having achieved these "Hacks".

So personally, I'm not worried
