Its road kill.

He was driving through the highlands (well being driven actually) and the car ran over something small and furry. He asked the driver to stop and burst into tears at the sight of the small, squashed, dead furry thing lying in the road. The driver said "why don't you put it on your head to hide your bald patch?". So he did, and its been there ever since.

He's on a mission and just as he thinks anyone who was captured is a loser he's not going to allow himself to be seen as soon. He will go independent and throw millions of dollars at this to split the vote, capitalise on the celebrity status he has and when it's close ensure there are endless recounts.
