I'm not an anime fan, but as I'm into lots of other geeky stuff, I end up seeing a fair bit of it anyway, and I find the way females are typically portrayed in it fascinating - HYPER girly, think all pink cheeks, crazy hair styles and colours, enormous eyes and a general look of innocence, coupled with ridiculously long legs, short skirts and often overly Quixotic figures.

Do people see this simply as an artistically creative and idealised depiction of femininity, or does it come across as rather more creepy than that?

My threads these days are a bit like an old lawn mower, they get the job done, but sometimes they need a few kicks to get them started.

Problem is some of the characters in anime are very young, for instance missa amani from death note, she is school girl age and in my opinion she has been too sexualised but Japanese culture is a lot different to ours in the west, and attitudes differ

I've never got into anime myself but that what I have seen just comes across as sick older men fantasising over very young school girls. But as previously stated its a different culture.

Technically speaking, that's hentai, which is a subgenre of anime. I feel I need to get out more.

Depends what sort of anime you're talking about, but yes, some of them are hung like horses, another topic fit for in depth discussion...

Definitely over sexualisation of schoolgirls in a very bad way on a lot of it, I prefer the 90's style, more realistic and brutal.

If particularly fond of a set of three called cyber city oeda 808. You can find all three on YouTube and I highly recommended them. It's graphic, brutal and cyberpunk styled.

I don't mind sone some modern ones though, girls und panzer is fun and there's no up the skirt pervy shots etc.

Attack on Titan is ok too but Armin pisses me off.

I love anime, there is an element of creepiness to it but that's what I like about it. Very girly, childlike, creative and ever so slightly sinister. Live looking at those images

She's 19 when first introduced and 24 after the skip.

So hardly a school girl.

she's a bloody model in the plot anyway so obviously going to be sexualised

I am an anime fan (or at least I was).

I've gone off them a bit as I'm not a fan of the way women and girls are portrayed in them. They tend to be objects of physical desire, drawn half naked of constantly showing more than necessary under very short skirts.

With the exception of shows like full meta alchemist and attack on Titan which have strong female characters that actually wear clothes

Whilst I am not denying that there are lots of female characters who overly sexualised and do appear to be young, there is a particular style of anime called moe which for many reasons favours extremely simplified art such as big, round featureless faces which can make the characters look younger.

There are also some pretty strong and formidable female characters around who are no more 'sexual' then Angelina Jolie or Scarlett Joahanson such as the Snake Princess in One Piece or that babe in Bleach.

Thing.is, it's commonplace in places like Japan. They don't see anything wrong with it.

Have you seen Urotsukidoji?

For me, the only woman I'd want, from the Anime I've seen, is Major Kusanagi.

She actually looks like a woman and not a child. Even if she's a cyborg.

I'd say Blood but she'd toss me aside after she'd used me up.

"

Interesting topic. Whilst not all anime adheres to the stereotype of extreme hairstyles, massive eyes and very little clothing on girls, it is fairly commonplace. I think in some instances, the underlying motives for the design is sexual. But in a lot of other instances, it really is just creative flair.

I think something people have to keep in mind before judging is the culture barrier between the West and Japan. I was in Tokyo a few weeks ago, and there, it's perfectly acceptable to have a billboard on a major street with an anime girl (who looked about 12) wearing very little, protruding nipples and cameltoe to boot.

Wander around the department stores of Akihabara, and there's whole floors dedicated to the sexualisation of anime. Love pillows, explicit comics, even trading cards with teeny anime girls on them.

Oddly however, displaying genitalia in pornography is forbidden in Japan, and is therefore always censored. Showing any cleavage in public is considered vulgar. Their society has developed a very different take on sex and pornography.

So really, I think people have to place the sexually charged stuff in context, because there is a vast amount of stuff out there that isn't sexualised at all. The colourful hair, big eyes and short skirts just catch everyone's attention, and dominates people's perception of anime.
