Should the police get the money or should it go to children in need

Police who found over £1m in cash in an attic have been told by magistrates they can keep the money.

Officers made the discovery, which is the largest in the force's history, at a semi-detached house in the Stechford area of Birmingham, West Midlands, as part of an investigation into drug dealing activity.

An industry-sized cash counting machine was also found in the attic, a West Midlands Police spokeswoman said.

Detectives made the find in September, but details were only released on Friday because the owners had 28 days to provide proof of where it came from so they could claim it back.

There's a million and one worthy charities that it could go to, then again if it was proceeds of crime, note I said 'IF' - maybe victim support would be more appropriate than children in need, who lets face it will be given a grotesque sum of money once again in a week or so's time

Dont know, IMO it should stay with the police but has to be used in helping reduce crime. It could pay for a few things this stupid government have taken away from us all.

I personally dont agree with all these charity events like Children in need, comic relief etc if 100% of the money raised stayed at home i might feel different.

Jesus Christ, let Plod keep it? Are you insane? That will just encourage them to be kicking in doors left, right and centre looking for more cash. Pray you don't get raped by a penniless beggar, it'll go to the bottom of police priorities, but trying to nail a bent solicitor will be top of their agenda.

Confiscate the drug money, by all means, but it should go to central Govt. for spending on more prisons.

What the policemen themselves??? They all going to be raiding houses looking for monies, then when we can;t prove where the £10.00 come from they guna claim it????

So many charities don't think they would all agree. And I don't always agree with these sports aid etc abit skeptical as to where the monies get spent. Mrs Fun

to be honest 1m isnt very much to be put into a police service or the nhs or anything like that but what they could do is share it over a number of centes for children it could be spent on a few days out maybe new stuff like pool tables etc as most clubs run to get children off the sreet is a £1 a week plus there tuck shop for sweets and im sure it takes a while to raise money for day trips or new stuff for the kids....

to be honest don't think it should go to charity as there are so many that would have their hands out for it they'd end up with a pound each and then if the police did decide on one they'd be accused of showing favouritism... they'd be dammed if they did and dammed if they didn't. basically whatever they did with the cash would be wrong in someones eyes ...

I'm guessing there must be a whole host of guidelines as to what should happen to the money and what the judge can do with it. If his directive says he awards it to the police and the police's directives say they must use it to benefit the local community from which it was recovered then that's a fair policy I think.

I think that's a fair point. The money has come out of the community so putting it back into local amenities and possibly helping with rehab might be a good way of using it.

Your probably right there will be some legal president. I bet it doesn't involve good causes though. Hmmm maybe i am getting to cynical on that.

Any properties found or handed in that are not claimed or the person claiming them cannot prove ownership after a certain period of time can be claimed by the person/persons or organisation who found them, as long as those items are not an illegal substance or item.

As the officers were on duty at the time they were representing the Police Force, and as the currency is not illegal the force can claim it. Police forces have guidlines on how this kind of money can be used and it is usually used to benefit the local community.

Individual officers would not be allowed to benefit from it.

I'd have to agree with wishy here,

Intercepting, drug scumbags money/preventing them from incurring further misery to people in itself is a benefit.

Both my wife and I have been victims of Heroine addicts at knife point and held captive for over Three hours, our home was ransacked, we permitted entrance purely because they led us to believe they where (GARDA - cops in Ireland)

The money re-couped should be spent on the victims, help them try and re-build there lives.

In Ireland(we support) "Children in Nee d" to, like we vote on the X-Factor.
