Despite usually hating this stuff I like the #thisgirlcan campaign (although I'm generally not keen on the 'girl' bit).
It's not just about showing fat people do exercise (or pretending to, because obviously no one fat ever even moves off the sofa). Even if it was I think it would have merit, but it's more than that. | |||

I'm surprised you aren't aware of it to be honest. "Personally I think it's sexist. When I exercise I get sweaty, certainly don't have perfect (for perfect read 'any'!  ) hair and never wear make up.

" There is a huge drop off of girls in sport and physical activity at puberty. They rarely go on to pick up activities later on as women. The campaign is about encouraging girls and women to get active. The poster campaign supports a television and cinema ad campaign showing girls and women running, swimming, cycling, playing football, in the gym etc. and enjoying themselves - whatever their shape, colour and ability status. | |||

There is a huge drop off of girls in sport and physical activity at puberty. They rarely go on to pick up activities later on as women. The campaign is about encouraging girls and women to get active. The poster campaign supports a television and cinema ad campaign showing girls and women running, swimming, cycling, playing football, in the gym etc. and enjoying themselves - whatever their shape, colour and ability status. " Of course there's a huge drop off there's not a massive motivation for it. There was an article on the BBC a few years back where they said at around 14 the competition level girls start losing out to even the average boys in sport and athletics which is going to be a big demotivator. It's not helped by the fact that many of the women's Olympic and world records simply cannot be beat any more. Take the women's 100m sprint the record hasn't been broken since the 80's and it's not going to be beaten either because it was set unsurprisingly before the introduction of mandatory drugs testing. there's a lot less chance for glory in the women's sport unlike the men's because there's only a handful of events that don't have longstanding unbreakable records from the 80s | |||

Meh I'm a bloke most things marketed at me would require the use of copious amounts of drugs to achieve the physique of the models so I'm somewhat cynical of advertising campaigns lol
This highly publicised national campaign isn't aimed at achieving the body beautiful like most of the other campaigns. It's about real women doing exercise, getting sweaty, wearing no make up, not having perfect hair in the gym and being proud of it.
I'm surprised you aren't aware of it to be honest.
I saw one today and I was just some Muslim girl wearing a headscarf holding a tennis racket with the phrase "I like playing the game, but I like winning more. #thisgirlcan"
Didn't really get the point of it th she wasn't fat or disabled or anything just looked like a normal person if I hadn't seen this thread I'd have had no idea what it was actually about.

It's going to be on an advertising board in my local shopping centre and nationwide alongside (thousands of) others!! I know it's a gimmick but I'm a little bit giddy about it!!" That bit seems to be eluding you, whatever anyone writes on here. You are not the primary target of the campaign, and from your comments you would fit somewhere at the third tier level. If nothing else you now at least know about the campaign even if it hasn't won you over to think "good on them" or "I'll be supportive about women getting physical". | |||

"It's nothing to do with the beach body ready thing, I think it was actually around before that anyway. It's designed to encourage more women to do sport, and the way I interpret the campaign is that it's trying to show more images of more women playing sport and doing exercise, outside of elite athletes or the more extreme end of the fitness market. Like there's a young woman in false eyelashes running round a council estate. Or a woman in a hijab playing tennis. Or a fat woman jogging. These aren't images you usually see. If it encourages someone to think they can go for a run, or to a gym, or to a class, or to a tennis court, because there might be someone like them there, then it's a positive thing, in my _iew. It can be really intimidating doing any of those things, or at least it is for me. It's not even about weight, it's about women and sport. The reason it's targeted to women is because there's a lower takeup of sport among women than men. I like it. And I also think Evie should be fucking chuffed, I would be." I did my dissertation at uni on this exact subject - media images of women in sport. (Get me - 20 years ahead of my time!  )
It's uncanny that pretty much everything I wrote is still largely true - 99% of adverts, sport related fashion shoots and coverage of real sporting women is dominated by the stereotypical 'attractive' women's body style. It's only campaigns like this that are moving things forward, promoting body positive images and encouraging more women to participate in sport and exercise.
Wish I still had a copy of my paper. But it was done before the age of t'internet and flash drives.
