go into bios and see if your hard drive is displayed

its either f2 or f8 i think depending on which system that your using

you can also try safe mode

but i suspect it could be hardware failure the hard drive or even an update thats crashed your operating system

safe mode can be accessed by forcing it off while loading but not always

another way is by selecting by a f key press on your keyboard

normally between f4 to f8 accesses safe mode depending on your model of laptop or pc that you are using it would hekp if you state what model that you are running is it laptop like asus or another type

Try reloading operating system if that fails its the hard drive, just buy a new one and put the operating system on it. No need to buy new windows for just hard drive swap

if using a laptop its better using the higher f9 to f12 to get into the factory settings and do a reset there

however if hard drive on its way out not much will do it

trying to reinstall on a faulty hard drive can last well over 24 hrs plus

i have used windows live disks and also hirens boot cd and also windows 7 repair disk and have to reload the bootloader for the hard drive to then boot up

but messing around in them disks can have bad results for your operating system

windows live disk is a very handy disk to have and so is the windows live usb more so to transfere everything thats needs to be saved before a clean install is put onto a system

My monitor is playing up and takes an eternity to spring back to life if you let it go into sleep mode for too long

As I'm on XP Pro (which has served me well), wondering if it might be as well to totally upgrade as I've only got 80 Gb memory on this archaic dinosaur

Sorry for hi-jacking ya thread OP

do you mean 80 gb of hard drive space

as goes for your lcd screen try a screen saver instead of sleep mode

pcs and laptops are at a low price worth considering upgrading even the ones that are refurbished are just as good

dont go to cash converters, or cash generators or cex they charge new price and you might as well get a refurbed machine for those prices and much newer system

Yeah 80 Gb hard drive memory which is all full of photos and music. There is a shop where I can buy a new PC and it'll have a faster processor and more memory.

I think you've likely got just a hard drive fault. It stores windows on it, so if broken, Windows will have loading problems or your data has errors.

New drives are cheap and you could buy a solid state drive for just over £50, which loads faster than standard hard drives. You'd need to reinstall windows on it. Much cheaper than new PC and could be faster.

Windows 10 comes out this month, so you'd get a free upgrade, as you're a windows 7 user.

I'm just estimating its a hard drive failure, as had this 3 times, very similarly,

It does highlight the importance of backing up your data regularly, as these things happen.

Makes me laugh when people say i need a new pc, im an i.t engineer and i work on some pretty old kit, usually a new hard drive does the trick and they are cheap enough
