I have just discovered my new found dislike for these people

I have been after a plumber to plumb my dishwasher in for about week now

the first guy who was supposed to come out last Saturday quoted me £69 which I though was a very good price anyway between then and this morning he has called and cancelled three times, he eventually turned up today, had a look round my kitchen and announced he was going to get the parts he asked before going if I had been quoted a price so I. said yes £69 he then said you do know that's per half hour plus VAT and parts and it's going to take me at least an hour as I have to go get the parts now, I questioned why I had to pay for his time to get the parts and why he didn't bring them with him surely to God a qualified plumber knows what he needs to plumb a dishwasher in? he just said it was part of the job..... Robbing bastard!!

So I then asked how much it would cost he said of he could do it within the hour I was looking at about £160 if he went over another £69 plus VAT on top of that, the bloody dishwasher didn't cost that much ffs, so I told him to bugger off and questions why when I asked on the phone I was told £69 and nothing about per half hour or VAT and parts he didn't answer and just left

so

I called another plumber and was told the job was a flat rate of £90 I questioned was that per half hour etc he said no it's just £90 and he could come out this afternoon, great booked him in, he turned up then started telling me about all the extras on top, VAT etc

I'm proper pissed off by now and said I asked if the £90 was all I had to pay and you said yes now your adding charges on, told him to forget it

it's not the price i begrudge paying its the fact they give you one price on the phone to get their foot in the door then once they are in add charges on hoping you'll agree seeing as they are already there

why can't they just tell you what you have to pay, why only tell you half the cost on a quote then suprise you with the rest on arrival

anyway I've been online and watched a video of how its done it looks piss easy so I'm going to the hard wear shop and doing it myself, the overflow is already in I've only got to connect it to the cold water pipe and that's self tapping

how hard can it be

watch this space

Its easy, not something I would ever pay for, good luck. I guess some do it like you said to get their foot in the door and they have too because others do and once they are there most accept the charges.

It really is an easy job, IV done several for mates, not harder than plumbing the washing machine in.x

It's a. 10 minute job, and the parts should be in any decent plumbers van!

Remember years ago, if you had a good garage then you kept it quiet for fear he would become too busy and standards would fall. Well nowadays, its all trades. I have a great plumber and get mates rates but its hard work, he is so busy, he is a couple of weeks behind for a job of mine but i am happy to wait. I am working with a new builder at the moment and he is brilliant though we are three weeks into a sixteen week job.

Find a good trade and keep quiet about it

The bloody thing won't budge I've even had a monkey wrench on it

washing machine drain out connecter from screwfix

i dont like the self cutting washer tap as sometimes the damn thing leaks

I've worked in the industry 28 years, I've never heard of somebody having the trouble you had!.

Having said that there's some right chances about who've just jumped into the trade after watching some utube videos thinking it's easy money!!

Avoid them.

I find the biggest problem I encounter is customers who haven't got the £65 you quote them to fit the dishwasher.... Oh you want paying now, I thought I could pay monthly.... Fuck off I'm not Littlewoods

There's a reason why decent tradesmen charge what they do.

It's called having a trade.

A friend of mine is now living in a hotel as the shower he plumbed in himself wasn't as well plumbed in as he thought. 18 months of renovation of his dream house flooded from top to bottom. 4 inches of water throughout the ground floor.

Electricity works even when it's wrong. A few years ago I found a ring main wired in bell wire. Worked perfectly well when a table lamp was plugged in. Would have burnt the house down if they'd plugged an electric fire in, which is exactly what they intended to do.

Why people with no qualifications at all but allegedly plenty of "common sense" think they can do this kind of work because "the bloke at b and q said it's ok" is beyond me.

Makes me chuckle. They'll risk their lives rather than pay a highly skilled and qualified tradesman 20 quid an hour but will pay a garage 100 quid an hour to service a car. Which is frequently a spotty oik plugging in a computer.

Carry on doing these jobs yourselves. If it goes wrong, sorry, when it goes wrong your insurance is unlikely to pay out.

Few of us begrudge using tradespeople who are ethical and decent. NNs report of her 2 plumbers today show the level of sharks out there.

I'm not a DIY person so think it's probably better for most of us to post on here, asking for tips, before we contact local ones for quotes.

I've got loads of jobs to get done but reluctant to have cowboys round.

Believe it or not I'd sooner not have to do it myself but I don't know any plumbers so have to put my trust in peoples web sites on the net

If I could find a honest one I'd happily pay him but so far I've been cancelled on three times and tried to be ripped off twice by guys who quote one price and ask for another when in my house

So what do you do, call every number in the yellow pages till you do find a good one?

£20 an hour? Where you getting your prices from?

It's not the paying I begrudge its the being lied to that pisses me off

When I call and ask how much to plumb a dishwasher I'm is and they say £90 I expect to pay £90, not for them to come out and start adding extras on, if its going to cost me £120 just say in the first place it's £120 its just out right deceitfulness to get into your home, quote the lowest price then bang the VAT on after your I'm their hoping I'll agree seeing as they are here

. I would try and find a plumber who is VAT registered or can show that he is registered with HMRC for tax. Generally plumbers who are VAT registered and pay tax will not rip you off . I am guessing but you should be able to get the job done for fifty pounds plus VAT.I would expect the plumber to have the relevant parts in his van or to bring them with him. Good luck in completing the job yourself . I hope it all goes well. I have in the past designed and installed my own central heating system . However I now tend to leave these jobs to tradesmen as there is usually some complication when you attempt the work yourself.

Honestly you can't get a dishwasher plumbed in for £50

I'm with you NN, give it a go, it can't be rocket science. It's not like you are building a house or adding a extra bathroom to your property.

There are too many people scared to do ANYTHING themselves, and it's these people feeding the rip off merchants and piss takers.

If all else fails, give your local plumbers merchants a ring in the morning and ask if they can recommend someone. One of my suppliers regularly gives my number out ( unfortunately I'm not a plumber ) it works for all concerned. You get a good plumber, he gets a job and if he needs to buy materials the merchant earns a few pounds

& lets not forget that contrary to some of the above posts, some of these rip off merchants & in the OP's case, outright liars are, you guessed it, - qualified tradesmen!!!

Good luck OP!

My dad once tried to re-wire a light... The fuse box thingy would have tripped if the previous owners hadn't replaced the normal wire with stupidly thick wire (old fuse box)... We had no electricity for 3 days..

When I first bought my house I had the same trouble with plumbers. I said to my daughters, forget marrying doctors or lawyers, marry a plumber because the rates they charge they're all loaded!

When I met Ben I was overjoyed: a heating engineer, plumber, gas fitter, electrician with his own business...well I was overjoyed.

If it wasn't for bad luck I wouldn't have any luck at all! He doesn't charge to see what the job entails. Fixing a tap may sound easy but some taps are "fancy", the "bits" boxed in etc, so he goes, discusses what needs to be done and the price. He then sends a written quote which the client acknowledges and he starts work. They have 90 days to pay, he prefers BACS for tax purposes.

He repairs rather than install boilers. If he can't fix it he'll replace it: he hasn't installed a boiler this year and only one last year.

He is honest to a fault.

Sadly, the holiday home I envisioned in the Bahamas will remain a fantasy as I've met the only plumber to cross my path who is poor...but honest

Seems to me we need to network more than just sexy times here on Fab.

Plenty of Fab members needing help with jobs around the house.

Plenty of Fab members who have the necessary skills.

Someone must be able to help the op out or recommend a decent plumber surely to god.

It's shameful and shabby for theses guys to imply one thing to get in the door and then start loading the quote.

A job like this, a reputable trades person should be able to give a fairly accurate estimate over the phone, and only have to adjust it if there are some serious issues when he sees the job.

I'm not a plumber, but I've done some of my own work - the last dishwasher I plumbed in, where none had been before, took me about 30 mins, and it never leaked.

"I have just discovered my new found dislike for these people

"Always YouTube the task, I've plumbed in washing machines and electric showers, I'm a graphic designer by trade but feck if I'm paying some one stupid amounts of money to do something I could do myself, basic plumbing is really easy and b&q guys give great advice

"

Well its 5 years down the line, the house is still standing, so its all good , obviously use your best judgment on what you think you're capable of doing, I did a loft conversion myself, but got a plumber and spark to sort out the obvious cause I wasn't gunna tackle those kind of jobs blind, was just talking basic plumbing, like a washing machine etc, showers are surprising easy to fit if all the connections are there ready for you

. I have installed a complete gas central heating system by myself. I did however take the precaution of having it inspected by British Gas before using and it passed . With electrical work providing you use the correct wire and earthing , you can hardly go wrong. . I have also retiled showers and probably took more precautions than a plumber would .

Hmmmmmmm. Electricity and water mixed, standing under the flowing water, holding on to the shower hose and standing in a big bucket. Do you buy a lottery ticket?

Good luck...... You keep rolling those dice. Lol.

Joking aside, did you cross bond the shower?

Have you checked the discrimination in your protective devices?

Is there a local isolation switch on the shower? Switch outside the bathroom, pull cord inside the bathroom.

Is the bathroom part of the Faraday cage?

Is the income electicity main pme?

Does your distribution board have rcd protection to the shower supply side of the board?

Is the incoming water main cross bonded?

If the answer to any of these questions is no, or I don't know, STOP SHOWERING! And call a sparky out to check it.

And I mean a proper sparky, not a YouTube or b and q sparky.

If you don't know one pop down to your local electrical wholesaler and ask for a recommendation.

Preferably time served, not government training scheme, NICEIC approved and Part P registered.

Happy showering.

£69 Per hour is about £135,000 per annum. That is small company Director, Senior doctor, Top of civil service money. Sometimes these plumbers are truly having a laugh. A builder friend employs plumbers at around £110 to £140 per day!!

Yeah right... Providing every hourly job was next door to each other and required no traveling and providing every hourly job didn't need any parts going for?

You won't get a decent plumber for less than £150 a day around Bristol...I know I've tried!

And no that doesn't mean there earning £750 a week either... You've heard of vans, tools, clothes, boots, trade body's, training etc etc

My gas card costs me 3k alone and as for the person that says they give 90 days credit?? I really have no idea how they can afford that, in my case I'd have 10k of materials minimum that I'd have payed for!

I needed my hot water cylinder replacing, 2 quotes of £500. So i bought my own cylinder and got quoted again. £500. I said "but I've bought the cylinder!""oh, erm..£470?" Get out of my house... Me and dad did it.

Unfortunately, now most people think working for a living is punching a keyboard, people's own skill levels are dropping. That's why DIY shops are reducing in number. People can't "do it themselves" anymore.

Time to make hay for those with hand skills.

That was per half hour

he quoted me £69 on the phone when I asked what he charged to plumb in a dish washer then when he qas stood in my kitchen he said that £69 was per half hour as they work to half hour slots plus VAT and parts and it was going to take him about 20 mins to fetch the parts and that's included in the time I'm paying for

if he did it within an hours (which he said he doubted) it was £160 if he went over it was about £245

all that from we charge £69 for basic plumbing that's what he said on the phone

I understand they have over heads but that's just day light robbery there's no way it takes that long he was just trying to drag the job out as long as possible to get more money out of and I hate being made a fool of he probably though cause I qas a woman I'd have no idea and just pay him I doubt he would have tried to con a man in that way

Last time i looked the records show none electrocuted in a correctly installed shower.

Just over a dozen from an incorrectly installed one.

There were no records of waiting times for people to be electrocuted in an incorrectly installed one.

If you have all the right tickets and inspections, they are bone fide and in date you should be fine.

Do not quote me on that. A small change in the installation can impact on another part of the installation.

Happy showering.

are you a plumber or an electrician loosing business to us who prefer to do it ourselves, not sure why you're so concerned about the safety of a shower, i replaced one that was already there, so all the necessary NCR sets had been filled out in triplicate, stamped by GOD, and given the all clear "

In answer to the question, no I'm not losing any business to diy'ers.

However I know enough (I have qualifications) to be concerned about my fellow Fabbers frying themselves in the shower.

I also know enough to know that you might only have swapped something that was already there and had the correct certification, but you have now altered the original installation, so the original certificates relating to your changes are invalid.

You're also not qualified to carry out that change as you're not Part P qualified.

And trust me, Part P has nothing to do with electricians wanting to charge you more money, it's a building regulation, it's also a legal requirement and last time I looked breaches carried a £2500 fine or 6 months in jail.

Caveat emptor.

Or words to that effect.

I'm off for a shower......

"Always YouTube the task, I've plumbed in washing machines and electric showers, I'm a graphic designer by trade but feck if I'm paying some one stupid amounts of money to do something I could do myself, basic plumbing is really easy and b&q guys give great advice

Is the incoming water main cross bonded?

. I don't think that I will be too worried about being electrocuted . The electrical circuits on this house were given the relevant certificate in order to confirm that they complied with the relevant legislation. I have a copy of the document on my file . Out of interest how many people are electocuted whilst having a shower?. I am very safey conscious and have thought about this on occasions ..

A small change in the installation can impact on another part of the installation."

. Is that a dozen per annum or a dozen over a number of years ? It seems that you are about 100 times more likely to be killed in a car crash.

Last time I looked, which in fairness was a few years ago, it was a dozen a year.

But the statistics don't show the incorrectly installed showers (or other types of work) which are an accident waiting to happen.

Of the three main services electicity is by far the worst.

It lurks, it lays in wait, it gives you no clues that somethings very very very wrong until the wrong set of circumstances fall into place.

And then you're dead.

Gas has an odour, you get a clue that somethings wrong.

Water you can see the problem.

Electicity is a silent assassin.

The ninja if the services....

I come from the point where i have fully renovated over a dozen semi derelict houses during the last 30+ years. All my experience has been self taught or gleaned from tradesmen.

Three major points. Only do what you are competent to do. Only do things that are safe and legal. Call in qualified and time served tradesmen when needed.

I will knock down a stud wall but not a load bearing wall. Thats for experts. I will hack plaster and lathe back to brickwork and put up studs, insulation and plasterboard but i wont put on a plaster skim. I will rewire an entire house but bring in an electrician to connect all sockets, check earthing, connect to rcd consumer unit and sign off. Same with water and gas.

I do what i can but i will always call in the experts at the appropriate time. Even with my amount of experience i will not take chances with my life or anyone elses.

Interesting reposte.

If I read this correctly, you can belittle an entire genre of highly trained, skilled and qualified individuals, but when someone posts a humerous pass at your profession it's a personal insult.

I'm willing to bet most plumbers and electricians would give their eye teeth to earn for what a graphic designer earns.

But at the end of the day it's choices.

You chose to be a graphic designer, they chose their trades.

Just because you don't like what they charge or understand the effort and responsibility that goes with their job, don't knock it.

"£69 Per hour is about £135,000 per annum.

I really have no idea how they can afford that, in my case I'd have 10k of materials minimum that I'd have payed for!"

There's something called the law of diminishing returns. The higher your price the less work you get.

You charge what your market will stand. At £69 per hour a tax deductible of £10k takes 18 days to fund. You will still have about 200 days to earn a living. Not bad work.

.

Lol your still assuming that every job is next door to each other.

You might only do 4, 1 hour jobs per day by the time you take out getting to every job.

I've been doing it since I was 23

Trust me I've had really really good years like 2005 where I turned over 175k with 60k of profit.

Buy I've had really bad years like 2009 where I turned over 140k with 25k of profit.

It's not a bad living but

I've got no company pension

No redundancy

No sick pay

No holiday pay

No bank holidays

no guaranteed income!

It's physical

It's knowledgeable

It's also skilled

It's dirty

And your welcome to try it any day you want to.

Just don't tell me it's an easy living

The trouble is its not just tradesmen...the professionals have got a bad attitude to life too. Dentists are an absolute nightmare - a ripping you off for an absolute fortune...when you can actually get an appointment...!!! Doctors make you wait as they're 'running late' even on the first appointment of the day or the session. Solicitors charge you for every time they breathe in and every time they breathe out if they're working on something for you, and bankers rhymes with wankers for a VERY good reason.

"I have just discovered my new found dislike for these people

I'm proper pissed off by now and said I asked if the £90 was all I had to pay and you said yes now your adding charges on, told him to forget it

it's not the price i begrudge paying its the fact they give you one price on the phone to get their foot in the door then once they are in add charges on hoping you'll agree seeing as they are already there

why can't they just tell you what you have to pay, why only tell you half the cost on a quote then suprise you with the rest on arrival

anyway I've been online and watched a video of how its done it looks piss easy so I'm going to the hard wear shop and doing it myself, the overflow is already in I've only got to connect it to the cold water pipe and that's self tapping

how hard can it be

watch this space "

I've got a meet with a plumber next week, I'll be sure to fuck him over for you

If the first appointment the doctor sees that day has something serious and takes longer than the allotted 10 minutes do you suggest that they should just kick them out and keep the schedule?

If there aren't enough dentists to ensure you can get an appointment when it suits you best do you suggest that the dentist should just double book them to fit you in?

There are lawyers and lawyers. If it's a firm you are paying for everything, not just that person's time. It's the office, their assistant, any para-legals supporting the work.

Cost and price are very different things.

Arse End of the Universe, Cumbria

I'm getting a new kitchen in at the minute...been quoted £60 for the plumber but all he has to do is disconnect the old and and reconnect the new cooker and give me the CORGI (or whatever it's called nowadays) certificate...my gas boiler check has just cost me £49 which was a 10 minute job - yeah, it's pricey but it's all magic to me, like the electrics that's just cost a fortune cos mine was originally done by Mr Faraday in 1898 apparently

problem is gas certs have to be done at 5 yrs by the plumber and there not cheap, most jobs have certs and courses which have to be paid for,a dishwasher can be done for beer money easy bwith a self tapping valve, even doing it with a tee and wash mac poss about 20 mins, i would charge about 30 to 35

Judging by some of the above posts it's currently being plumbed in to the electric shower, I think!

"£69 Per hour is about £135,000 per annum.

Just don't tell me it's an easy living"

This. Particularly the invite to "try it any day you want to".

Any takers yet? No? I thought not.........

"

If the first appointment the doctor sees that day has something serious and takes longer than the allotted 10 minutes do you suggest that they should just kick them out and keep the schedule?

If there aren't enough dentists to ensure you can get an appointment when it suits you best do you suggest that the dentist should just double book them to fit you in?

There are lawyers and lawyers. If it's a firm you are paying for everything, not just that person's time. It's the office, their assistant, any para-legals supporting the work.

Cost and price are very different things.

All true. But some jobs are 5 days in the same place and your hourly rate is unlikely to reflect that.

Anyway, as for redundancy, sick pay etc etc. I suggest you look at the structure of your work situation. Your own limited company can employ you and provide all those requirements better than sole trader.

But trust me on this; Get a pension asap!! The way it is going by the time you retire the State Pension will not buy you a cup of coffee!

No she's just nipped out for some armbands and a sump pump"

Haha really not needed its piss easy did it myself last night, I just took off the connector for the washing machine over flow and got a double one and connected the washing machine and dish washer to it, and yes I made sure I got one with valves in to stop the water backing up, got a self cutting connector, you didn't even need to turn off the water supply with the one I bought! And connected it up, put it on a empty run last night, no leaks, put it on another run this morning, again no leaks and pots came out clean, I wouldnt have attempted it if I didn't already have a waste outlet in but if you have its so easy, didn't even take me half an hour

Self cutting joiners have a habit of leaking over time as they are shit. A simple compression T piece would have been a safer option.

sorry about that and I hope it doesn't leak! I am a tradesman (builder) myself and really not a fan of plumbers as they think they can charge what they want, but when asking for a fixed price we do sometimes have to quote for what can go wrong as it often does !

You have not even bother to read our message we sent you. This is the meassage we done.

Why not give Steve a call at Chams I know they use a good plumber to deal with anything that goes wrong at Chams & Greenhouse.

I'm sure he would be able to help. H & S

"I have just discovered my new found dislike for these people

I'm proper pissed off by now and said I asked if the £90 was all I had to pay and you said yes now your adding charges on, told him to forget it

it's not the price i begrudge paying its the fact they give you one price on the phone to get their foot in the door then once they are in add charges on hoping you'll agree seeing as they are already there

why can't they just tell you what you have to pay, why only tell you half the cost on a quote then suprise you with the rest on arrival

anyway I've been online and watched a video of how its done it looks piss easy so I'm going to the hard wear shop and doing it myself, the overflow is already in I've only got to connect it to the cold water pipe and that's self tapping

how hard can it be

watch this space "

Its a £50 cash job on a Saturday morning (usually)

. For now her dish washer is up and running and that is all that matters. If necessary the self cutting joiner can be replaced in a few years time if it starts to leak or are there any sealing compounds which can be applied. ? Well done to the original poster for tackling the task and achieving a good result in a short space of time.
