More and more often I find myself arueing with people (Mostly over facebook) about the _iews they choose to air, without any real knowledge about what they're talking about, and it all seems to boil down to them believing every little thing their chosen media outlet spills forth. A lot will read a headline, get angry and spout nonsense without even reading the story

One of the most popular I keep coming across are people that will say all benefits should be stopped!(Because benefits street is a good indicator of what everyone on benefits is like...) And then go on to say that the UK should stop sending aid abroad and use the money to help people here! ...and they don't even see the irony

Anyone who sees/listens to/reads the media is necessarily influenced by it to some extent. That applies to you, too. Would you post a thread about benefits otherwise?

You choose with whom you communicate. If you feel their opinions do not match yours, you could either seek to "educate" them or choose not to communicate with them.

The world is full of people with different opinions. Thank goodness. It might just be that some folk may think your _iews to be incorrect.

I never said I was outside of the loop, but I'm certainly not one to let a story wash over me and not check out facts for myself. Some seem happy to swallow what's being said and see the world as being that way.

I've no problem with people having different opinions to mine, but normally find when pushed on certain subjects (benefit, immigrants etc) they don't have any facts to back them up and normally get very sweary.

I find it depressing that a lot of news and media outlets today will twist a story to get as much outrage out of it as possible, with only the faintest sprinkling of truth.

I'm intelligent enough to realise that for every slacker with 16 kids by a dozen different dads whinging about the fact they've barely got enough to pay for their fags, booze, play stations, phones and sky subs and it's sooooo unfair there are hundreds of folk struggling on benefits who would dearly love to get a job/be able to work if their health allowed (and I read the Daily Express or the Mail)

Therefore, yes I may be somewhat influenced because I'd give the aforementioned slacker a boot up the arse if I could, but I realise its not indicative of everyone on benefits...same as I don't duck for cover every time I see a young Asian man with a rucksack

I suspect we are all influenced whether we like it or not.

I often get frustrated by silly media stories relating to areas that I have knowledge in as I know it causes other to form that _iew.

With that said, I may well often form an opinion on a subject based on a media story which is utter nonsense. We cant all know about everything and therefore we are al dependant in some fashion on our sources. Its a shame some of those sources have poor ethics

It's only since the advent of the internet and the ability to share information with the rest of the world at the click of a mouse that (some)people are slowly waking up to how rotten n corrupt our system is.

I don't watch tv unless there's something on I wish to watch ie I never have it on in the background slowly brainwashing me!

I've watched benefit street two times out of curiosity, I didn't think much to it, not really enraging and not really endearing!

I felt no better or worse of any person on it, than the royal family, just humans getting through life to the best of their ability!

I agree with you about programmes like Benefit Street. However I've found while arguing with my more left wing friends that "you're just falling for the media bollocks" is used as a catch-all argument to tell me I'm wrong about something.

Errr no, I've looked into things and considered them for myself and made my own mind up. Usually from the numbers, because I'm an accountancy geek.

Just because that doesn't accord with what they read in the Guardian (which doesn't count as media brainwashing, apparently) means I can't possibly have developed those opinions myself.

We are all massively influenced by the media. To claim otherwise is ignoring the fact that is supplies all of our news, even if indirectly received from people we know.

You can usually pick out those who regurgitate the sound bite opinions that they've soaked up, as the opinions are almost word perfect to the source that delivered them. Not much critical thinking going on.

We can go to more critical sources for data, such as research bodies, but most people don't.

We largely have a right wing media here and the BBC appears more recently to regurgitate conservative output pretty much without critique. It's a dangerous and unbalanced state, for millions to be so subjected to very biased propaganda, that does not have their best interest at heart.

It's easy to see how the public are manipulated into resenting benefits claimants.

Particularly on guff like benefits street when the voice over churns out the amount of benefits whoever it happens to be is on a month....all while the tv cuts to pics of all the mod cons...iphones,flat screen tvs,pc's,laptops,games consoles etc 'owned' by said claimant.

All done to instill resentment and loathing in folks who can't see the bigger picture......imo anyway lol

The BBC has never been an unbiased organisation since the 60's. Until about five years ago it could just as well have called itself The Guardian Broadcasting Corp. Being forced to the right is just payback for all those years spouting left wing propaganda.

yesterday i was trying to get my thoughts about europe refuge crises coming from middle east ( 12% children 13% women 70 % men 20-50 years old ( ccomon im not an idiot ) ) so i phoned lbs london radio as they were talking and asking about what people think about uk joining russia to kill Isis so on ....

but they kept cutting me off as i told them ( they ask me to ) what i am going to speak about

can that be taken to a fact as a propaganda? and violence of freedom of speech??????

It's a conundrum. Whilst in a mumti-million strong community, we will largely be so far removed from people of current interest that we rely on the media to provide this data to us.

So millions of us get informed by the media, or the media informs us indirectly via people we know and discuss things with. In short, our knowledge and opinions are largely media driven.

We may take a counter position to the media one, but will still be reactive to the medias influence.

We largely have a biased media, that doesn't simply provide data but instead selectively edits what it sees as appropriate to give us and usually with an overt opinion upon it too. Sometimes it's covert but both have massive power to shape our thoughts.

Typically we feel that our opinions are more the result of our own personal free thinking attitudes. The many messages that repeat the mantras suggest this not to be the case at all.

Sorry if it's off topic, but one thing that really bothers me about the media is that fact that many people give a shit about other peoples lives and they do not even know that person. I find that highly strange. Like who cares about Kim Kardasians arse? If they even go on about that any more, not bothered with the news at all for ages.

just seems like everyone understand the fact about media being used as a way to control us as a crowd of stupid monkeys so could we use that against them? like not paying tv license cause we pay to them money so they use it against us not to educate us ( apart from some channels )

The media do put their own slant in everything they report as there are very few, if any, truly neutral media outlets.

However very often the truth is in the story or at worst, available elsewhere. Just most people are too lazy and settle for what they hear/see.

i like to watch the news on RT , then compare with others channels, how they all put a different slant on things, and prob film what they want you to, i did see a migrant being punched in hungary but it wasnt on full _iew camera was moving and the copper was partly hidden

Propaganda has been used since its invention by the Nazi, but its name was too harsh so they changed it into PUBLIC RELATION.

it has been introduce in the USA by Edward Bernays and this is exactly what media are for.

I must admit this is very clever, and it works...

We just have to read related topic with current events to understand what you mean OP.

Well media uses the same technique to manipulate the public opinion.

Don't see the media as a source of reliable information but as the right arm of politics.

What baffles me is how the daily mail or even the times never really speaks about the people who have benefited by billions of pounds with recent wars. Does this not ring alarm bells about whether we are really being told the truth?

I am also alarmed by the lack of coverage of innocent people who have died in recent wars. I mean all human life is equal and that includes 9/11 victims but the other victims deaths are just as sad and not remembered or even acknowledged at times.

We also need to ask ourselves the question of whether the world was a safer place when lunatics like Saddam Hussein, Gaddafi and the taliban ran their own countries? I'd love to be a history student in 50 years time.
