Nooooooooo!

Then logic kicks in and says this cannot be true cos the govt is tightening up the benefit system so surely this programme on the Romanians claiming benefits is just sensationalism.

Indeed. Or programmes that depict the vulnerable people who's lives would be blighted without help from state spending. It amazes me how people get a lump in their throats when watching the suffering of needy people on comic relief, children in need etc, but yet are happy to allow exactly the same people to be labelled as undeserving scroungers by politicians and media.

A group of Romanians came over here, the house and their fares paid for by their clan leader. He gave them a job of collecting scrap metal, through self-employment, so they could then get a national insurance number so they could claim benefits.

What I do not understand is why on earth are they letting members of some of the EU groups through, then not having a safety net for them. Its heart breaking. Not surprised some turn to theft. Unless they are asylum seekers, then the benefits systems is literally closed to them. If they have children, they can claim child benefit and child tax credits, that is all for a period of at least 14 months. If they find employment, they work all hours and are often exploited. Food banks are their salvation. They are treated like scum and not a priority by the authorities. So don't buy into the medias version.

They are not deemed as a non priority they are deemed as non eligible for social housing and will be referred to the no recourse to public funds team who will either help with their immigration or will help them return home.

Non priority to me, which has actually been said too many times to me by benefits workers, when I'm trying to sort some of my family cases out. I take note of this. They are eligible for housing if they can pay their own rent. I wouldn't put a dog in some of the places they are offered to live in or where they live.

Of course they should work if they are able to, and not rely on benefits. I am never disputing that. As for the idle British, could not agree more, especially when they do not have any barriers to overcome. How easy is it for some of them, (EU), to secure employment? Not at all easy. Speaking as a black Briton, who was born here, it is difficult.

They could have just not come without a proper job and plan?

This is the main issue with the EU, you wouldn't find people complaint about freedom of movement if it had stayed just the economical and culturally similar nations (Norway, Sweden, France Germany Italy, Denmark, Holland etc) but then they added in all the former Soviet block of impoverished countries and then seemed surprised when it flooded the founding countries with cheap labour and problems.

Ok so ... Anyone from the eu who hasn't worked can get jsa for 3 months.

To get housing benefit as an eu national you need to have worked in the uk for 6 years. So...i work with rough sleepers and all eu national on the street are offered to go back home (the uk pay for it) and lots turn it down. I find it very sad that sleeping on the streets is better than home for most

Well it's more than the £70 a week they get sitting on JSA and there is assistance such as working tax credits and housing benefit to assist those on a low income. I don't have any assistance from the state as its deemed I earn too much but each month I struggle to make ends meet, my bills are going up and I have my rent there are many people in this country in full time work in the same situation as me I have no kids etc so I'm entitled to fuck all but I would much rather work than sit on benefits jumping through hoops being treated like crap by the job adviser if the only job I could get was scrubbing toilets well I'll just don my best rubber gloves and scrub.

. We should have a rigorous clamp down on anyone entering the UK without a job. It should be immediate deportation. Britain should not have to assist those from abroad who are unable to work. This is tax payers money and we have a responsibility as to how it is spent .

Would you do it if was 0hrs contract so didnt know what hours you'd be working from 1 week to the next and afraid that if they phoned up and asked you to come in but you weren't able to you could lose your job?

Yes there is top ups to your wages but not everyone knows about them. Shouldn't the job you are doing pay enough to live on anyway if it's full time without assistance from housing benefit or tax credits? If you want to encourage people to go out and work make it worthwhile for them as thought that was the point of employment was to better your situation. Fix this and then we can start tackling poverty as 50% of all families living under the poverty line have at least 1 working parent.

Clacton on sea, Essex

The next targets will be the millions on Tax Credits as the government think they can save 2 billion from cutting these, hard working people being penalised for being caught in working in low paid jobs.

These new cuts in the next budget will cause havoc, they tend to put the tax threshold higher for those on low paid jobs and do away with tax credits but if you are only on minimum wage you end up worse off.

Pensions, and benefits to pensioners, take up the majority of the UK welfare budget at £154.7bn - topping even our spending on the NHS.

As already mentioned, a refreshing amount of people who sort of "get it" don't really come here to talk politics but yes the system will crash, its debt driven and debt is out of fashion. Just to sow a seed though.. The world needs less workers, we need to change from the industrial revolution to the technological revolution.. And we haven't caught up. So maybe we need to reduce the retirement age to 50 and give the jobs and income to the young and spend the support more wisely. This concept that life purpose is work, busy busy, accumulating wealth and possessions is a clever con to create worker sheep. And before people jump on me, I may live in a bus but I pay tax!

Didn't say pensions should be cut just pointing out that fact seeing many people are believing the tripe that papers like the daily mail print. Sort out those individuals and corporations who are dodging tax, encourage people to work by raising wages so that it does pay to work and stop picking on those who do need welfare because they genuinely can't work. Maybe then relatives would be able to get a decent allowance so that either they or someone else could look after a loved one that was ill or disabled without putting them on the breadline. As been said before don't believe the propaganda as it's just there so that you don't realise the real problem with society today and that's that there is too many people at the top bleeding it dry for their own benefit. Expenses for being an MP when most of them already earn more than the average household?

That's the point though, as soon as you join the euro you lose the ability for domestic quantative easing and bail outs. If the uk had been in the euro then we would have followed the same route as we woudlnt have been able to have creeated our own electronic money.. But be hostage to the ecb.

The first computer i ever operated was in March 1972. It was run by a financial services company.

As time went on the use of computers grew. By the late 1970s people were talking about being able to be a services driven economy where there would be jobs for all because we would be working 5 hours a day, 3 days a week in a paperless office where we would retire at 55.

I think the Oracle got that one wrong

How do you feel about British people who happily live on benefits, breeding, never worked with no intention of doing so receiving benefits?

I saw a programme the other day of a British woman, looked fit to me, happily growing in her paid for council house spending £93 a week in Waitrose : forking out £3 for a loaf with seven slices.

I resent paying for anyone who hasn't contributed regardless whether they live in a palace or temporary accommodation!

. Nice post and my my thoughts exactly . I am happy to help the disabled but bitterly resent paying taxes to help those who cannot be bothered to work. Why should we help asylum seekers or illegal immigrants ?

All these programmes do is demonise people on benefits. What about the people that claim in work benefits or pensioners on benefits do they mention that or people in work having to use food banks as they cant afford to live on their wages x

.

That's just bollocks

You can build a house in Romania for less than 20k easily!

You can buy one already built for 40k

ASYLUM SEEKERS
" or illegal immigrants ?"

I've highlighted part of your quote because I'd like to make the point asylum seekers are NOT illegal immigrants. They are people who have had to flee their countries to protect themselves and the lives of their family. Illegal immigrants are chancers who just want to try their luck somewhere else.

I'm certain that everyone here would agreed that those who have not contributed shouldn't be allowed to generate a life on benefits but Cameron and his lap dog Iain Duncan Smith are only adding more poverty to this country with their attack on those using benefits. Oh wait sorry just the other day they abolished the method as to how we measure poverty. I don't have faith in any of the parties anymore to do the right thing and fix the system that has become overburdened with red tape and MP's tripping over themselves to pander to giant corporations. They said after they were elected 5yrs ago that 'Austerity, we're all in it together.' What utter bollocks that was and yet still the general public voted them in for a second time.....

Baa need I say more???

It's worth remembering that the Romanians of this thread aren't asylum seekers OR illegal immigrants.

They're here quite legally under EU law.

somewhere out there

One thing that has become apparent in British political discussion today is the intolerance shown to differing opinions. From the Scottish Nats with their orchestrated campaigns to break up Labour meetings, to the mudslinging that goes on whenever anyone dares air an opinion that is not inline with those of the more vocal participants of a discussion. Surely one of the basic tenants of democracy is free speech? Why then does there always have to be accusations of Daily Mail readership and the like? Instead of trying to shout down anyone who doesn't agree with you why can people not have a decent discussion? We try to believe we are better than places like North Korea and Zimbabwe but it just looks to me as though many people in this country - particularly to the left - would rather stifle decent debate.

For the record, I read the Daily Mail and also other propaganda media like The Guardian and The Independent. They all have their agendas and each one is to be taken with a massive helping of salt. Anyone who believes otherwise is foolish.

Now back to the topic at hand...

We should help asylum seekers because they are seeking asylum. They are at risk of persecution it murder in their place of origin. This is basic human decency. No-one from Europe is an illegal immigrant.

Hungary have changed their rules so they are not taking back asylum seekers who have gone onto other European Countries even if reached Hungary as their first country. They say they can't cope with the influx.

Are we going to forceably sterilise people or force them on contraception? Isn't education the way forward and demonstrating there's a different way to live?

It's a generational thing kid grows up with mum and dad on benefits living in their council house, kid grows up has kids and the cycle begins again. However you are right people need to be educated.

What!?

How did you get to that?

My point was people always bring up British born benefit claimants as an argument aging measures to prevent immigrant benefit claimants.

Ie if we can't solve the native issue why bother dealing with the immigration issue which we can deal with.

Not sure why you lept to forced sterilisation

You said about breeding . As if they can't have children. I know you didn't say forceably stop them. But how do you stop it?

The difficulty is , it's the children who suffer - they didn't ask to be born. That's where it comes back to every time.

Aeroplanes do actually bring people from other countries to the UK as their first place of departure. Not everyone walks. And for those who come to Europe by boat, do you really think that every one of them should be accommodated in Italy? Human crises deserve attention and solutions globally, not simply washing our hands of the issue because we don't happen to share a border with a population that is facing catastrophic circumstances.
