A recent MENSA test to measure I Q was published in a well known journal. Would fellow forumites be interested be willing to undertake the test which is 30 questions long?

For those interested here it is the results will be published at noon!

And besides, IQ tests are just for people who think IQ tests demonstrate something important.

It's bollocks.

Some of the most intelligent people I know find it difficult to do simple things or relate to others around them.

A 'high' IQ can be a bit of a barrier.

Exactly.

I have no idea what my I.Q. is (and I'm really not that bothered), but I consider myself reasonably intelligent, yet I don't know the answers to most of those questions. More to the point, I really don't care. The answers are not relevant to my life, nor do I envisage any situation - aside from maybe a pub quiz - where I would need to know the answers - and considering that the only time I go into pubs is if i'm either having a meal or DJing there, I'm not going to be taking part in one

It takes at least three different measurements to make any reliable decision regarding someones intelligence.

The days where I.Q. tests are taken as evidence alone are long gone.

People misjudge the tests. They are very reliable as long as they are not taken as the sole indicator.

Reason.

Logic.

Memory.

Planning.

Do one of each of those if you want to know your brain power reliably.

This is a pub quiz test, not a Mensa IQ test.

IQ tests are a very blunt tool, subject to cultural/socio-economic differences in terms of performance, depending on the test.

You can boost your score significantly by practising tests and analysing the ones you got wrong.

There's a fun test you can take on the MENSA site. I got 66%,I couldn't be bothered with the anagrams and my maths is rubbish now and I misread the Fibonacci numbers one,so 66% isn't bad for me

I think in was around 140 something when I did one years back in uni. But I've had a lot of booze and a lot of head injuries and one genius moment of working on the bike with the engine running and the garage door shut since then.

So I'm pretty sure I've lost a fair chunk of my abilities.

I loved exam day at school, any exam. My general knowledge isn't great though, I have a seeping sponge for a brain now. I like puzzle type and strategy games to keep my brain functioning now

Central

IQ resting evidence was flawed and falsified, so there's no solid basis for its value. It also evaluates a limited aspect of cognitive abilities.

As others state, these even more limited questions test long term memory recall. So no correlation to general intelligence and limited to people who have exposure to this type of material.

Bit of a fail really.

If people can improve their scores via practicing, then it's not going to be measuring intelligence. Overall we don't have a meaningful test system that can measure comprehensive intelligence, including relationship and 'softer' aptitude potential. Imo.

Really easy 12 divided by 3 is 4

4 x 2 is 8, 8 x 2 = 16

Really easy 12 divided by 3 is 4

4 x 2 is 8, 8 x 2 = 16

This question was on the MENSA Workout test I did earlier:

Two men, starting at the same point, walk in opposite directions for 4 meters, turn left and walk another 3 meters. What is the distance between them?

10m

12.5m

14m

I thought that as they make a rectangle you use pythagorus theorum, which I couldn't do in my head at that time. a=8m,b=6m c=? Using pythagorus theorum and there I lost focus

But now I know it's 10, because I can do the maths in my head

The Guardian printed a feature today on some kind of mathematics olympiad for the cleverest minds in the world. In it they featured the following puzzle which they used as an example of the kind of stuff they need to solve...

21 female students and 21 male students take a math test.

In it they each get a maximum of 6 questions right

Also 1 correct question from a female was also got right by a male

Prove that 3 female students and 3 male students got the same questions right

...only trouble is they failed to include how many questions were in the test... which means that the problem is impossible to solve, after all the test might have had 9 zillion questions in it.

Does seeing they ballsed up their example make me one of the brainiest people on the planet? lol I suspect not

Because we never got it, college teacher was too busy the first time I got a sheet with 10 questions like this. I even tried the next question in case I could do that one but that was just as complicated so didn't bother at all (2nd time round when I got the same questions again, I stared out the window). Think I will stick with English and leave maths to the brainy ones

There was something like that about elephants in the test I did. You have to prove that 400 were blue. I didn't have a clue where to start. I hate not knowing how to solve things like this

I find English harder. I can never remember which pronoun is which, where a bloody semi colon goes or anything to do with past participles

In that case then if we ever do a Mensa test, we'll sit next to each other and you can help me with the maths questions and I'll help you with the English ones

I scored in the top percentile (well over the MENSA minimum) aged 14 at school and I'm very well read but all this means is that when I've met *actually* smart people all I am is smart enough to know that when they're speaking to me they are dumbing things down and being extraordinarily patient.

I've always believed that if I was the smartest person I knew, that just said something about the limits of who I had met. Consequently I've done my best to speak to people who are much smarter than me so that I can learn and improve to the best of my ability.

Truly intelligent people, the kind that make world-spanning changes that the world notices, are truly scary in how far ahead of us they are.

Dunno where to start with this one, I'm no expert but :

1 does that theory only apply if it's a right-angled triangle? Turn left at 90 degrees or at a random angle?

2 if they both turn left then the shape won't be a triangle - the connecting line would make it a figure of 8 (but straight lines of course).

3 if I'm just being pernickety an one guy turns right while the other goes left (ie both heading north) then the connecting line makes a 4 sided shape - rectangle or so.

But if you got right then extra points to you based on that question!!!
